That escape pod saved my life. I am afraid the others were not so lucky...
~ The Engineer during the game's tutorial.

The Engineer (or simply known as the Player) is the main protagonist of the construction and management game Factorio.

The color of the player defaults to yellow, but can be easily customized. In multiplayer, players are automatically assigned in different colors.

Story[]

Though the past of the Engineer is unknown, the story and goal of the Engineer are very straightforward. The Engineer crash lands on an alien planet known as Nauvis, that is infested with ever-spreading insect-like, hostile aliens commonly known as Biters. The biters are accompanied by other enemies, such as acid spitters and giant worms that act as natural turrets.

The Engineer must harvest nearby resources as well as craft more of them to build a factory, to furthermore build a rocket that will assist the player in escaping the planet.

Gameplay[]

Factorio two players

Two different colored players in multiplayer.

The Engineer is able to perform a wide array of actions, and can do so at extremely high speeds. The Engineer survives by harvesting any nearby resources and building factories that further produce more resources and more buildings in an effort to constantly keep growing the player's factory.

The Engineer has experience in using almost any type of weapon with almost pinpoint accuracy. These weapons include pistols, shotguns, automatic-firing guns, flamethrowers, rocket launchers, land mines and throwing grenades. Other unique weaponry such as laser-discharging armor, poison-gas capsules and "slowdown" capsules are also at the player's disposal.

When the game begins, the Engineer starts with very little to no resources. The player must harvest nearby resources to create machines that can harvest resources even faster. Manual labor and coal-powered buildings are the starting works of the Engineer, followed by creating steam-powered engines, then also creating robots that can travel across the factory which manage resources and repair buildings for the player.

Aside from the important factory building, the Engineer must defend himself from alien attacks at the same time (though it is possible to turn enemies off completely before starting a game). This means that the player's resources must be managed to both build a bigger and bigger factory, as well as building stronger and stronger defenses to fend off enemy attacks. The player's machines will produce pollution, which angers enemies further and creates even more attack waves from enemies. Both pollution and killing enemies has enemies evolve into becoming stronger. The more the enemies evolve, the larger and more powerful the enemies the player encounters.

The Engineer can also build labs to research bigger and better inventions, which pave the way to crafting more advanced, expensive and/or important things. The Engineer also has a flashlight that turns on automatically when night comes. Vehicles such as cars, tanks and even mechanical spiders can be built by the Engineer, which allow for better and faster travel around the alien planet.

Personality[]

Factorio players multicolored

Different colored players.

Due to the Engineer simply being a faceless, voiceless avatar of the player, the character of the Engineer is not completely defined. There are no other people to converse with, except in multiplayer. The gender of the Engineer is never revealed, though appears to have a masculine body and breathing sounds (when at low health).

The Engineer talks to himself during the game's tutorial, mentioning each game mechanic bit by bit for the player to understand. This could, however, just be an inner mental monologue. The Engineer shows minimal emotion and dread due to his situation, losing his presumed lost allies during the crash. Aside from this, the Engineer is a quiet person, and the true nature of the character falls to the person playing him.

In multiplayer, players will often work together to build a thriving factory, unless they decide to go rogue and shoot other players and stunt their progress. This behavior may be standard depending on the gamemode or mod of a multiplayer game, where the goals require players to be more competitive.
