Ennui. It's what you would call... the boredom.
~ Ennui describing what her name means.

Ennui (French for "Boredom") is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Envy) of Pixar's 28th full-length animated feature film Inside Out 2, the sequel to the 2015 film Inside Out.

She is voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos.

Personality[]

Ennui, like her namesake, is eternally bored, apathetic, lazy, and deadpan. When conversing with other emotions, they speak in a very unamused and dispassionate monotone manner. She is usually seen on the phone and lying on the couch, but it has been shown that she can move when she wants to. The way she puts her commands into the console is also a reflection of her lack of motivation, since she has an app on her phone for that. Ennui also finds annoyance in the idiosyncrasies of other emotions, such as Joy's amusing name-calling, nostalgic reminiscences of recent events, or Envy's excitement about wanting something.

Despite her apathetic demeanor, her main job is to provide a protective mechanism to prevent Riley from focusing on things that aren't worth her time and energy, such as drama and, to some extent, her parents. It also helps Riley to show a listless look and that way to "keep her cool" while talking to Val and the cool kids.

There are also exceptions to how Ennui doesn't just show boredom and lethargy as her only personality, as she can get quite upset and angry whenever she loses her phone. Additionally, Ennui has moments where she smiles or shows interest in not only Riley, but other emotions as well.

Appearance[]

Ennui bears a strong resemblance to Fear, with the main difference being a longer, triangle-shaped nose and multiple strands of hair. She has muted periwinkle skin, dull lavender eyes, and very long straight indigo hair with straight bangs hiding her eyebrows. Her wardrobe consists of an indigo sweatshirt and sweatpants and gray socks with blueish-gray heels and toes.

In the book, Go to Sleep, Anxiety!, she's seen wearing her sleepwear which consists of a dark gray sweatshirt and sweatpants, along with a white sleep mask.
