The Entity is an ancient, primordial cosmic being in the Green Lantern franchise, representing the embodiment of all life in the DC Universe. It is the source of the White Light of Life within the Emotional Spectrum and the force responsible for the creation of all living beings across the cosmos. Hidden within the Earth since the dawn of time, The Entity plays a pivotal role during Blackest Night, where its awakening leads to the defeat of Nekron and the forging of the White Lantern Corps, which channels its power to protect and preserve life in the universe.

History[]

The Entity first appeared in Green Lantern vol. 4 #43 (2009), created by Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke, as part of the Blackest Night storyline that expanded the Emotional Spectrum and introduced its cosmic entities.

Origins and Nature[]

At the dawn of the universe, the Emotional Spectrum was born from the forces that shaped existence, with each color representing a distinct emotional force. The White Light of Life was the first light to exist, and from it, The Entity was born as the cosmic embodiment of life itself.

As life spread across the universe, the White Light fractured into the seven colors of the Emotional Spectrum. To protect itself from threats like Nekron, The Entity hid within the Earth, which became its cradle, nurturing life across the cosmos.

The Entity is the source of the power wielded by the White Lantern Corps and is capable of resurrecting the dead, healing worlds, and bestowing the gift of life to the lifeless.

Blackest Night[]

During Blackest Night, Nekron seeks to destroy all life in the universe, targeting The Entity to extinguish its light forever. Sinestro initially bonds with The Entity, gaining immense power, but is unable to wield it fully due to his selfish nature. Eventually, Hal Jordan merges with The Entity, harnessing its power to defeat Nekron, sever the Black Lantern Corps’ connection to the living, and resurrect heroes who were essential for the universe’s future.

Brightest Day[]

Following Nekron’s defeat, The Entity tasks twelve resurrected individuals with specific missions necessary to heal the universe and preserve balance, using them as temporary extensions of the White Light. These missions restore the Elementals of Earth and correct cosmic imbalances caused by Nekron’s invasion.

Later Appearances[]

The Entity’s essence remains tied to the White Lantern Corps, continuing to empower chosen individuals like Kyle Rayner, who masters the entire Emotional Spectrum to become a White Lantern, wielding The Entity’s power to protect the universe from cosmic threats.

Powers and Abilities[]

As the embodiment of life itself, The Entity possesses near-omnipotent power, including:

  • Life Creation: Source of all life in the universe, capable of creating and restoring life on a cosmic scale.
  • Resurrection: Can revive the dead, as demonstrated during Blackest Night and Brightest Day.
  • Cosmic Awareness: Understanding of all living beings and their interconnectedness.
  • Energy Projection: Channels the White Light of Life with vast offensive and defensive capabilities.
  • Empowerment: Bestows White Lantern rings and power to worthy champions.
  • Immortality: As a cosmic force, The Entity cannot be permanently destroyed, embodying the eternal nature of life.
