Biography[]
Chatterly makes his first appearance in the season four episode “One of Us”, where he interrogates Peter Church’s undercover target Daniel Miller for potential fraud after stolen credit cards were found in his lab, but Miller manages to outsmart Chatterly, and he has no choice but to release Miller, prompting Church to call him out for potentially ruining his investigation. Several episodes later, in the episode “Closure”, he requests Ellen MacKenzie’s help in taking down Gino Londoni, a private detective who specializes in adoption cases, as he suspects that he's supplied family members with phoney long-lost relatives.
Chatterly returns in the season six episode “Slow Hand, Easy Touch”, now in charge of the Homicide unit following the murder of Frank Callahan several episodes prior, when Church and Angie Piper find the bodies of five criminals, four of whom that they were planning to take down in a sting operation, and the fifth body being a rival of theirs who likely killed them with an accomplice, plus they find a surviving witness named Theo Bolton. Chatterly later brings in crime boss John Garratt for questioning in relation to the murders, prompting Church’s boss Luke Harris to confront him for putting Garratt on alert, possibly ruining any chance of Undercover being able to get near him, before telling Chatterly that Theo had identified Garratt as the second shooter. Chatterly mentions this to Garratt when he and Harris are interrogating him, prompting Garratt to demand that he be put in a lineup, and although Chatterly agrees to this, Harris and Church object to Theo being forced to identify Garratt in a line up due to him being mentally impaired, which Chatterly observes for himself when Theo asks him an inappropriate question, leaving Chatterly confused. Chatterly later arrests Theo when he accidently kills Sharine Sands.
In the season seven premiere “Lies and Secrets”, Chatterly is leading the investigation into finding criminal barrister and Church’s ex-girlfriend Ingrid Burton, who was kidnapped by Kieran Frances Conrad prior to his death. However, Chatterly is unable to find any reliable leads until a woman’s body matching Ingrid’s description is found, prompting him to bring Church and Angie to the location to identify the body, but Church tells Chatterly that it’s not Ingrid. Chatterly later shows Church and Angie a tape that reveals that Conrad was waiting at Spencer Street station for Stig Enquist to arrive with the ransom money. Chatterly and Harris later meet with Church and Angie at the hospital following their rescue of Ingrid, and they are informed that Ingrid will be fine.
Later in season seven, in the episode “The Weakest Link”, Church and Harris talk to Chatterly about one of his officers Dale Kemp, who despite being placed on stress leave by Chatterly, has interfered with Church’s investigation towards Erik Mills due to his personal search for escaped inmate Joseph Carter. Chatterly explains to Church and Harris the details of the child kidnapping and murder that Carter was in prison for, as Kemp was part of the original investigation. When Kemp arrives in Chatterly’s office, he along with Church and Harris confront Kemp over his unauthorized investigation into Carter, for which Chatterly decides to place Kemp on suspension. Although Church and Harris later team up with Kemp to jointly take down Mills and Carter, and despite Church offering to speak to Chatterly on Kemp’s behalf on reinstating him, Kemp tells him that he’s already spoken to Chatterly, but is still suspended. Some time later, Chatterly speaks to Angie, who has been part of the Homicide unit for some time, about if she wants to take a permanent position in the unit due to a staff reshuffle, but she politely declines Chatterly’s offer, as she decides to return to Undercover instead.

Trivia[]
- Chatterly appeared in 19 episodes of Stingers from 2001 to 2004, making his first appearance in the twelth episode of season four. And would appear intermittently until season eight, when his appearances on the show became more frequent.
- Although Chatterly is confirmed to be in charge of the Homicide unit from halfway through season six, it is never confirmed if he's the official head of the unit, although it does seem most likely due to him remaining in charge of the unit at the end of the series.
- If this is the case, however, then it is also quite unusual in the series, as all of the previous heads of Homicide before Chatterly (Bill Hollister, Harry Love and Frank Callahan) all held the rank of Detective Inspector when they were in charge of the unit, whereas Chatterly remained in the rank of Detective Senior Sergeant while in charge of the unit.
- Prior to his role as Chatterly, John Ridley previously appeared in a season two episode of Stingers in 1999, in a similar role as Detective Milano.
- Chatterly’s actor John Ridley is also known as a screenwriter, and had written seven episodes of Stingers for season seven and season eight.
