~ Ermac

Ermac is a former supporting antagonist until he became an anti-hero in Mortal Kombat 1. They are a construct created by Quan Chi who obeyed his commands until they betrayed him after freeing him from prison.

Ermac is voiced by Jamieson Price, who reprises the role from Mortal Kombat X.

Biography[]

Within Liu Kang's New Era, due to making efforts to prevent the rise of any potential villain, Ermac would not have existed, as no one would have the motivation to create him. However, due to the interference of outside forces, events would transpire which led to his creation in different circumstances to their counterparts.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

Ermac was created by Quan Chi as the product of a soulnado that was activated in Outworld's Living Forest. As such, they are made up of thousands of souls of those who were resting there, including the soul of Emperor Jerrod, the husband of Empress Sindel and the father of Mileena and Kitana. Ermac battled Liu Kang's allies in the Living Forest and outside Ying Fortress in Earthrealm, where they were defeated by Ashrah, Sub-Zero, and Mileena. With each defeat, the magic that bound Ermac's souls gradually weakened, eventually allowing Jerrod's soul to manifest and take control of the body.

Jerrod reunites with his family and joins his old ally Liu Kang in the battle against Shang Tsung and subsequently their Titan counterpart. Sindel is killed in the conflict, but her soul is collected within Ermac, allowing her to persist. Following Titan Shang Tsung's defeat, Jerrod remained beside the now-Empress Mileena as counsel, although Ermac's Collective would regain control, and was forced to free Quan Chi to heal him. After doing so, the necromancer attempted to put Ermac under his control, but Ermac fought against him, using their soul's unique abilities against their slaver. Ermac were left wandering Outworld to decide their future, and to find a way of reconciling their many souls differing desires. Their intro dialogues indicate that while not loyal to Outworld's empire, they would fight against the Realm's enemies, such as Shao and his forces, as well as their former master.

Personality[]

When newly created, Ermac was a ferocious minion of Quan Chi, fully convinced of their superiority. After gaining a free will, Ermac refused to be Quan Chi's slave. They wanted to discover what their purpose was, due to have been created by accident, with their Collective's many minds having different intentions. Ermac did not have any malicious intentions, being able to converse with his former enemies, aside from Quan Chi. They were loyal to Outworld without wishing to be ruled, refusing to join Shao and Reiko, and were equally appalled at Havik's destruction of Seido.

Powers and Abilities[]

Unique Physiology: Ermac is not one person, but an entire collection of souls of warriors brought together into physical form through means of powerful magic. As a result of his very being composing of thousands of souls, Ermac possesses various powers related to them. In Mortal Kombat 1, Ermac was created by Quan Chi as the project of Soulnado.

Quotes[]

For a moment, Jerrod took control. We fixed the damage which had allowed him and reimposed our collective will. But the damage went further than We thought. Without Quan Chi's aid, the spell which birthed us would fail. All of our souls would die. We freed the sorcerer from captivity. But after healing us, he betrayed us. He schemed to make us his slave once more. Kombat was fierce. Yet, we persisted, finding strength in the unique abilities of our collected souls. Now We must decide our future path. Reconciling our desires will be difficult, but reconcile them We must. If not, We will be consumed by civil war.
~ Ermac's MK1 ending.
You have shamed the souls of your ancestors!
~ Ermac to General Shao.
We envy your clarity of purpose.
~ Ermac to Raiden
