Escargoon is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Customer Service) of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. He is King Dedede's right hand man who works with him to defeat Kirby once and for all, though their plans always fail. He is often very loyal to his boss but will turn against him from time to time.

He was voiced by Naoki Tatsuta in the Japanese version, and by Ted Lewis in the English version along with King Dedede.

Appearance[]

Escargoon is an anthropomorphic snail who is Dedede's right hand man. His skin is lavender, and his shell is dark green. His eyes are green as well and rise over the rest of his head on a stalk. He has short, light green hair and a goatee of the same color, and only four teeth. When he moves, he often makes a whirling noise.

Personality[]

Escargoon is a man of many faults. He can be generally described as a sadist, and particularly relishes in the suffering of Kirby and his friends. He is also intensely selfish, dishonest, and paranoid, to the point where he hides stashes of jewels in the castle from Dedede's even more selfish eyes. He is also openly egotistical and disrespectful to others, and often speaks sarcastically to them, not even sparing insults for King Dedede. As outlined, a lot of Escargoon's negative personality traits stem directly from his treatment by Dedede, who regularly abuses him both physically and emotionally.

However, Escargoon does have some positive attributes, which can be more evident than Dedede's. Though not quite the genius he describes himself as, he is still intelligent, as he is able to invent and operate complex machinery, formulate effective plans, and make advanced mathematical calculations. Every now and then, he can also drop the formality and treat Kirby and his friends with a level of decency, though usually only when it serves his interests. Most notably, Escargoon cares deeply for his mother, and would do anything to please her, even if it incurs the wrath of King Dedede.

Heroic Acts[]

Despite usually working with Dedede to defeat Kirby, he has done good acts at times.

  • He is sometimes never mean to Kirby on his own, unlike Dedede who's usually spiteful towards Kirby.
  • He acts nice towards everyone, despite haven been forgotten by everyone (due to having the monster Erasem inside him) in "Escar-Gone".
  • He attempted to protect his own mother from Dedede's forces in "Like Mother, Like Snail".
  • He briefly objected to Dedede banning a popular book, having enjoyed it like everyone else in "A Novel Approach".
  • He encourages Kirby to suck up the bomb when he, King Dedede, and Kirby were trapped inside Belly Buster in "A Half Baked Battle".
  • He tells Tiff and Tuff of the Island Sisters who can call off Mosugaba, getting fed up with the monster's pollen storm.
  • He, along with King Dedede helped the others to stop Nightmare in the series finale "Fright to the Finish".
