Espio the Chameleon is a supporting character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

He is not only a martial artist and a member of Team Chaotix, but is also training to become the world's greatest ninja trainer. His favorite foods to eat are dumplings and odango.

Espio over the years, has grown into a strong ninja and can camouflage like all chameleons do, and keep practicing his skills. He can also do anything to help Sonic out in his adventures.

He is voiced by Yūki Masuda in the Japanese version, and by Bill Corkery, David Wills, Troy Baker and Matthew Mercer in the English version, the latter who also voices Chrom in the Fire Emblem series, Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Battlefront II, and Aiden from Minecraft: Story Mode.

Biography

Knuckles' Chaotix

Espio like the rest of the team is found on Isolated Island while Knuckles travels through many levels of the island to rescue the Chaotix from Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic the Fighters

Espio is only member of the Chaotix's to make an appearance in this game. Espio like many of Sonic's other friends is fighting for the Chaos Emeralds to stop Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Heroes

Espio and the rest of the Chaotix form Team Chaotix when they get a call offering a large reward in return for helping the anonymous client. They later learn that the client was Dr. Eggman himself, having been captured and imprisoned by Metal Sonic, who had evolved into Neo Metal Sonic, and was planning on using the new Eggman Fleet to conquer the planet. Neo Metal Sonic had also been watching Team Chaotix alongside Team Sonic, Team Dark, and Team Rose, learning their abilities so that he could augment them and transform into the Metal Overlord to begin his conquest. However, his plans are thwarted by Super Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and he is regressed back into Metal Sonic, defeated. The Chaotix meanwhile chase after Eggman to get their reward for helping him when he tries to weasel out of giving it to them.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Espio is among Sonic's friends who aid the Guardian Units of Nations in defending the Earth from the invasion of the Black Arms. Espio will serve as Shadow's Hero Mission guide in Mad Matrix, asking for Shadow's help with hacking the four terminals in Dr. Eggman's mainframe to gather data for the Chaotix to analyze. However, they are later ambushed by Eggman in his Egg Breaker, forcing them to fight him to escape cyberspace.

In the Last Story, Espio and the Chaotix are still trying to analyze the data they collected before it is lost, but only get access to it after Charmy whacks the keyboard with his backside, triggering a pre-recorded messages from Gerald Robotnik to Shadow about the ARK and the Eclipse Cannon and how they were designed to destroy the Black Comet when it returned in 50 years, ending with Maria Robotnik appearing to offer her support to her grandfather that Shadow would succeed in his duty. This leads to Shadow being able to defeat Black Doom, the dark prophet and leader of the Black Arms, and carry out his duty with using the Eclipse Cannon to destroy the Black Comet, wiping out the Black Arms once and for all.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, Espio and his fellow Chaotix members are part of the Resistance spear-headed by Knuckles that was formed to take up arms against the Eggman Empire at the start of the War to Take Back the Planet. The Chaotix were assigned to defend the City from attack, aided by a young soldier who seemed unable to handle the simplest of tasks assigned to them. However, when the City was attacked by one of Eggman's aerial battleships with a legion of Egg Pawns being deployed from it, the soldier was able to disable the battleship with a lucky hit using an anti-aircraft artillery piece, forcing Eggman to call of the attack and withdraw, earning the soldier praise from the Chaotix. However, later on, the war turns against the Resistance following Sonic's apparent death against Eggman's new commander of the Eggman Army, Infinite, and within six months, 99% of the planet was under the Eggman Empire's dominion. Espio decides that, without Sonic around to provide hope and morale for the people, it is up to the Resistance to provide that miracle the people are looking for.

After it is discovered that Sonic is still alive, but incarcerated on the rebuilt Death Egg, a rescue attempt is made and succeeds. Joined by Classic Sonic after he was brought to their world, Espio and the rest of the Resistance are able to make considerable progress in reclaiming territories from the Eggman Empire, culminating in a final assault on the Eggman Empire Fortress, Eggman's final stronghold. Although Sonic and the Rookie defeat Infinite, it is a team effort by them and Classic Sonic that sees to the end of Eggman's Death Egg Robot trump card and possibly the Phantom Ruby, wiping out the Eggman Army and leaving the Resistance victorious.

The team Chaotix appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a novice-ranked primary grab-type spirit. Their spirit battle are against Sonic, Pichu, and King K. Rool on Windy Hill Zone where the enemies are invincible.
