Euphemia li Britannia is a major character in the anime/manga series Code Geass.

She is the daughter of Charles zi Britannia and Third Princess of the Britannian Imperial Family. She is the half-sister of the protagonist, Lelouch vi Britannia, and Nunnally. Of all his half siblings, Euphie is the one Lelouch cared for the most.

During the series, she becomes the Sub-Viceroy of Area 11, despite being named against her will. Euphemia is also very close to her older sister, Cornelia, who she admires and loves very much. Euphie is also the love interest of Suzaku Kururugi, who eventually becomes her knight. Unfortunately, Euphie accidentally becomes mind-controlled by Lelouch's Geass, and he is forced to kill his sister with his own hands to stop her from committing genocide.

She is voiced by Omi Minami in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Michelle Ruff in the English version.

Personality

Euphemia is a kind-hearted and strong-willed young woman and a pacifist. Despite of being part of the Imperial Family, she does not share the despise that most of them have for the Japanese people, and she has ideals that are very similar to the ones of Suzaku, who wants to end the conflict and integrate the Japanese people into the society without bloodshed. She lacks any prejudice or bigotry that tends to infest Britannian royalty and nobles. She understands the intolerance exists, thus works hard to counter it, such as assigning Suzaku, an 11/Japanese, as her personal knight; this was criticised harshly by the nobility, however, she ignored them due to her own belief in equality, plus a mild bias of her interest in Suzaku.

In this regard, her half-brother Lelouch also intends to help the Japanese, but through much more radical and violent means, as he is also seeking for revenge. However, because of his care for Euphie, Lelouch at one point is convinced by his sister that she may be able to succeed to make a better world if they work together and use more peaceful methods, though their plans are completely ruined when he accidentally uses his Geass on her.

Also, Euphie is so gentle and compassionate by nature that the command "kill all the Japanese" that the Geass forces her to do is met with great resistance, and she is overwhelmed for a moment before eventually succumbing to it. Either from trauma or the Geass-influence, she seems unaware of the actions that she commanded to do. As Suzaku comforts her on her death bed, instead of worrying about herself, she asks if the planned Special Administrative Zone for Japan - restoring their autonomy - went well; she seemed to realise that she was dying, but still asked for reassurance that the Japanese are okay. Suzaku lies to her, which allows Euphie to die in peace, ignorant of his subsequent begging for her to live.

Story

Sometime after becoming the Sub-Viceroy of Area 11, she talks with Lelouch about their perspectives of the future of the world and Japanese people. After reaching an agreement, however, Euphie accidentally becomes mind-controlled by Lelouch's Geass as he sarcastically remarks that he could order her to do anything if he wanted to, even killing "killing all the Japanese". She desperately tries overcome the effects of the Geass and Lelouch attempts to remove the command, but they both fail as Euphie succumbs to the command and runs away holding a gun. She commits genocide on the Japanese gathered to the inauguration of the Japanese area and chaos issues. Lelouch runs after her and fails to stop the massacre.

Shortly after, Lelouch approches her as his Zero persona and remorsefully shoots Euphie in the chest, forcing her to stop the genocide. This is witnessed by her knight Suzaku, who is horrified by the scene. Piloting his Lancelot, Suzaku carries Euphie away and takes her to the medics. In her last moments, Euphie briefly comes back to her normal self and asks Suzaku if the Japanese people are happy. Suzaku lies and comforts her, telling her that they are happy. Then she dies as Suzaku holds her hand and cries, pleading her not to die.

To save face, Britannia disowned Euphemia postmortem, labeling her a traitor to the Empire. Those who knew her rejected this conclusion, particularly her sister, Cornelia, and her knight and possible love, Suzaku; both Cornelia and Suzaku began an obsessive search for revenge against Zero, albeit unknowingly planting the seeds for their eventual defection from Britannia.

While not an act of compassion, Schneizel reveals the truth about Geass to world, noting that it wasn't Euphemia's choice to enact the massacre, rather a command by Zero, though he omits it being an accidental order. After Lelouch's ascension to 99th Emperor of Britannia, building upon the evil that Schneizel inferred with Euphie's death, he begins a campaign of cruelty and oppression; according to the Zero Requiem, Lelouch meets his death, with the purpose of having the world's hatred die with him, and the motivation being atonement for all the lives he took along the way, especially Euphemia.

As Euphemia is completely exonerated, her legacy survives when Empress Nunnally returns self-governance to Japan; Euphie is remembered as a hero, and martyr who died during the demon Lelouch's rise to power.
