Eva Heinemann is a major character in Naoki Urasawa's Monster anime/manga series. She is the ex-Fiancée of Kenzo Tenma and daughter of Eisler Memorial Hospital director, Udo Heinemann. Initially an antagonist, she seeks to ruin Tenma's life when she refuses to accept her offer at a second chance in their relationship but redeems herself when she becomes an enemy of Johan Liebert, thus having a common enemy.

Personality[]

Likely stemming from her greedy father, she is shown to be superficial, arrogant, impatient and spoiled, being unable to take no for an answer. This is prevalent in her relationship with Tenma, as she would heartlessly dump him after their engagement when he lost his position in the hospital.

She would later return nine years and ask to resume what they once add and gets angered when Tenma isn’t interested. Despite her being the one to end things, she felt possessive and jealous, even confronting perceived romantic rivals (even when they are just friends) and revealing intimate details about her experiences with Tenma in a way to stake her claim. This reaches the point where she tries to incriminate him for a crime she’s not certain he committed out of anger and pettiness.

As the series progresses, however, she becomes much more mature and develops heroic qualities. She finally learns to appreciate other people, rather than just viewing them as tools for her own social advancement. She also ceases being selfish, and even becomes somewhat brave.

Biography[]

Not much of Eva's early life is known but she grew up in a rich family and likely grew spoiled as a result. She was initially portrayed as Kenzo Tenma's dedicated lover, then later his fiancée. Eva and her father, Director Udo Heinemann, praised Dr. Tenma after Eisler Memorial Hospital was recognized for its successful procedure on opera star F. Rosenbach. When her father was appointed Chairman of the hospital, Eva counseled Tenma to keep up with her father and advance will come in due course.

Tenma informed her during a date that he could have completed the unsuccessful surgery Dr. Becker attempted on a Turkish man, had Dr. Heinemann not instructed him to operate on the opera singer instead. Since he had only followed orders, Tenma asked Eva to explain that it was not his responsibility. Eva agreed, stating that "after all, people's lives aren't created equal." Tenma is prompted by this to consider his professional ethics. Tenma's moral uneasiness increased when Dr. Heinemann postponed his nearly finished research on subarachnoid hemorrhages so that Tenma could finish a draft for Dr. Heinemann's presentation to the European Association for Acute Medicine.
