Evan Abby is a supporting character in the Criminal Minds episode “Ashes and Dust”. He is the leader of the Earth Defense Front eco group, who was originally suspected of being responsible for a series of homicides involving fire.

Biography[]

Born on February 22, 1966, Abby got a job as an environmental engineer but later lost his job. During his time as an engineer, he was exposed to benzene, a highly flammable gas that caused him leukemia. After his diagnosis, he retired and formed a group known as the Earth Defense Front (EDF). The group’s mission was to protest and prevent the rezoning of chemical dump sites into land. Abby refused to pay child support but later caved in. He started to drink, which caused him to lose his wife, in he gave 2000 dollars of child support for 9 months straight. However, while most of the group had the same goals, one man stood out, Vincent Stiles. Unlike the other members who cared for the cause, Stiles thought it was solely to create fires. Beginning to target families that were on the EDF’s list, he would break into their houses and light their houses on fire with Kerosene, watching as they slowly died from the fire.

After Stiles kills 2 families, the behavior analysis unit, also known as the BAU, start an investigation on what links the families. Believing him to be responsible for the arsons due to the families being on Abby's list for businessmen, Aaron Hotchner and JJ lure him by asking for help. Once he comes, they reveal that they are FBI and show Abby the pictures of the dead families. He, however, is disturbed by the crimes and looks away the best he can, which is noted as the unsub is sadistic, but Abby is not. After being stalked for a period of time, he disbands the group, with all the members showing visible anger, except Stiles, who manages to hide it. As he knows he was being stalked, he disbanded the group in front of Hotch and JJ and asks if they are happy. Knowing his time is up, he starts to withdrawal thousands of dollars' worth of money to help his son and ex-wife. At his son's baseball game, Hotch shows Abby images of people who left after the group was disbanded. Finally, realizing who is similar to the description, he gives Hotch Vincent's name. Meanwhile Stiles kills another family, and when a man walks into Stiles at night, he pulls a Molotov cocktail out of his car and throws it at the man, burning him to death.

Seeking to kill Stiles, he goes underground and does his best to avoid the FBI from finding him. Abby meets up with Stiles and feeds his ego by telling him he needs his skills for an arson attack. At a warehouse which is connected to an elementary school parking lot, they start pouring gasoline on the floor. While he is doing it, Abby tells Stiles that he needs one more thing to make Stiles happy, victims, or most specifically an innocent family. Stiles states that he doesn't know the families, but Abby retaliates that he didn't know them either. Stiles mentions that the Benzene won't even burn through half of his suit's oxygen tank, but Abby reveals that it burns twice the degrees that Stiles is able to withstand After pulling out a lighter, Stiles asks, "How do you plan on getting out of here?", Abby does not budge, so he replies, "I don't". He then flicks the wheel and kills both of them. Hotch wants to run in to help Abby, but Jason Gideon holds him back, which heavily angers Hotch, who blames himself. Despite his suicide, Hotch gives a letter to his son and gives him a hug, meaning Abby's death was not in vein.
