Evelyn: That’s not true. You’re not unlovable!
Deirdre: What are you talking about?
Evelyn: There is always something to love! Even in a stupid, stupid universe where we have hotdogs for fingers, we’d get very good with our feet.
~ Evelyn forming Deirdre that she is not unlovable.
Stop calling me Evelyn! I. Am. Your. Mother!
~ Evelyn during her final battle with Jobu Tupaki.
Evelyn: You are getting fat, and you never call me even though we have family plan, and it's free. You only visit when you need something. You got a tattoo, and I don't care! If it's supposed to represent our family, you know I hate tattoos, and of all the places I could be, why would I want to be here with you? Yes, you're right, it doesn't make any sense! Maybe it is like you said, maybe there is something out there, some new discovery that will make us feel like smaller pieces of shit. Something that explains why... you still went looking for me. Through all of this noise. And why? No matter what, I still want to be here with you. I will always... always... want to be here with you.
Jobu [tearfully]: So what you... you're just gonna ignore everything else? You can be anything, anywhere. Why not go somewhere where... where your daughter more than just... this? Here all we get... are a few specks of time where any of this makes any sense.
Evelyn: Then I will cherish these few specks of time.
~ Evelyn's speech to Jobu Tupaki which ultimately reforms her.

Evelyn Quan Wang is the main protagonist of the critically-acclaimed 2022 science fiction film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

She is the wife of Waymond Wang, and the mother of Joy Wang. She is an overwhelmed but optimistic laundromat owner who helped save the multiverse from her powerful daughter's Alphaverse counterpart Jobu Tupaki, and her dangerous Everything Bagel by splintering her mind across every possible universe and becoming one with her doppelgangers, forming a single consciousness.

She is portrayed by Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, who also played Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies, Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery, Ying Nan in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Soothsayer in Kung Fu Panda 2, Master Chow in Minions: The Rise of Gru, Yuki in Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, Airazor in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Biography[]

Evelyn Wang tries to finish her taxes at her home, which is a small and cramped living space above a laundromat that she runs with her husband Waymond. Her college aged daughter Joy tries to open up to Evelyn who waves off the fact that she is a lesbian with her girlfriend Becky. Evelyn also puts up with her father Gong Gong who can hardly speak English and whom she cannot bring herself to tell that his granddaughter is gay. She frequently interacts with the friendly redneck Rick and the pompous "Big Nose" who are constants at her laundromat. Completely unnoticed by anyone, Waymond suddenly becomes agile and checks on their computer at the checkout before resuming being his usual self. Evelyn attempts to resume finishing her taxes before having to meet with the IRS.

Part 1: Everything[]

Evelyn, Waymond and the wheelchair bound Gong Gong head to the IRS building. While they get in the elevator, Waymond suddenly undergoes a personality change and straps what appears to be two blue tooth ear pieces onto Evelyn. He informs her that he is Waymond from another universe and that she is needed for a very important mission. He gives her instructions that as soon as she leaves the elevator she will be faced with either going to the IRS agent or heading into a broom closet. She is to go to the IRS agent, switch her shoes and then press the earpiece when they turn green. As he adjusts the ear pieces, Evelyn suddenly sees her life flash in front of her; growing up in mainland China before meeting Waymond who whisked her away to America, much to her parents' displeasure, they bought the laundromat and had a happy life before things started to fall apart with the arrival of Gong Gong. Waymond suddenly returns to his usual self, much to Evelyn's confusion.

Evelyn follows "Prime" Waymond's instructions and meets with IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdra who sternly examines her collection of receipts. Deirdre questions many of their purchases, such as a karaoke machine, and starts to find the Wangs rather unpleasant. Evelyn switches her shoes and pushes the button and is suddenly transported to inside the broom closet with the Prime Waymond who reveals to her that she is the key to saving the multiverse. He reveals that in his universe, his Evelyn perfected universe jumping, but in the process created an evil being called Jobu Tupaki who killed her and now plans to wipe out the entire multiverse. Before he can reveal more, something outside the closet begins to cause a commotion. Prime Waymond warns Evelyn before he is "killed" by the being on the other side; an evil version of Deirdre.

Evelyn returns to her universe where her scream alerts everyone. Deirdre cynically takes pity on the Wangs and offers them another week to get their affairs in order. Waymond speaks with Evelyn who, believing she is speaking to Prime Waymond, is under the impression that she is being given instructions. As Deirdre walks up to them to tell them something, Evelyn panics and punches her in the face; causing her to scream in pain. Evelyn realizes that Waymond was talking about a divorce paper that he apparently wanted her to sign. Suddenly, Prime Waymond takes over just as security guards arrive to withhold them. Prime Waymond suddenly eats a stick of lip balm and proceeds to beat up the security guards in a quick and efficient manner. In the other universe, the evil Deirdre answers to Jobu Tupaki who is revealed to be a loudly dressed version of Joy who is in a constant state of entering different universes. She kills the closet Evelyn with her powers.

Prime Waymond drags Evelyn through the building as everyone hastily flees, only for them to be confronted by Deirdre, now possessed by an alternate universe version. Prime Waymond slits the webs between his fingers so that he can know sumo wrestling. However, he gets blocked by a filing cabinet and informs Evelyn that she needs to pick up martial arts either by a.) professing her love to Deirdre, or b.) falling asleep. She fails to do the former and winds up in an adjacent universe where she and Waymond went home to do their taxes and ends up in an argument with him about how divorce might be good for the two of them. Prime Waymond becomes regular Waymond again and he and Evelyn try to escape Deirdre. Just as she is about to catch up with them, Evelyn successfully professes her love to her and activates a universe jump.

In an alternate timeline, Evelyn chooses to stay behind in China rather than go with Waymond and nearly gets mugged, only to be saved by a white haired, yet rather young looking, martial arts master who teaches her kung fu. After winning many tournaments, she moves to the United States and becomes an action movie star. Evelyn is suddenly able to block Deirdre and tosses her into a wall and in an epiphanic moment confesses to Waymond that she enjoyed her other life of staying in China. Prime Waymond takes over and he and Evelyn run.

Part 2: Everywhere[]

Evelyn is confronted by Jobu Tupaki, who transports herself and Evelyn to her Bagel, revealing that she wanted to see if Evelyn would see something different when she does end up like her, mind fractured across the multiverse. When Evelyn is exposed to the Bagel, she begins to see get nihilistic like Jobu. She acts violently in the other universes, hurting others and even stabbing Waymond. She then prepares to enter the Bagel with Jobu before she sees Waymond fighting for peace and kindness. Evelyn is swayed by Waymond's kind acts, and moves away from Jobu, who dismisses Waymond and prepares to enter the Bagel by herself, transporting it to Evelyn's universe. Evelyn tries to stop Jobu, but is stopped by the other verse-jumpers. However, before Jobu can get too far, Evelyn decides to fight back by using empathy to fight against what is hurting them. When Alpha-Gong Gong stops her, she confronts him on his actions, and gets him to back off, seeing his wrongs. She gets to Jobu and they fight. When Evelyn is pulling Jobu away from the Bagel with the assistance of all the verse-jumpers, including Alpha-Gong Gong, she convinces Evelyn to let her go. Before she can go too far, Evelyn stops her with a speech that gets Jobu to see her meaning in life, and goes back into Evelyn's arms.

Abilities[]

Like Jobu, Evelyn becomes connected to the entire multiverse and every alternate version of herself, gaining the ability to channel their abilities at will and alter her current reality to match. Unlike Jobu, however, she becomes optimistic and uses this knowledge to defeat both Jobu's cultists and the Alpha Verse agents nonlethally with relative ease. She eventually learns to tap into the power of the multiverse to manipulate reality around her, such as summoning objects from other universes or transforming other people into their alternate counterparts.
