Ezzo Cadner, also known as the Gray, is a minor character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name.
Ezzo Cadner was a powerful dwarven mage who received the title of "Gray" for his mastery of multiple magical elements. The second greatest magic user of the modern era, Cadner was originally intent on proving himself greater than the greatest modern mage: Roswaal Mathers. He eventually joined the Felt Camp, becoming a strategist for the faction as well as the personal tutor of Felt.
Synopsis[]
False Court Magician[]
Though Cadner was indeed powerful, the mage considered the greatest in the Kingdom of Lugunica was an eccentric nobleman named Roswaal Mathers. Mathers was the officially appointed court magician to the Lugunican Royal Family, and the bearer of the titles "Green," "Red," and "Yellow," which signified that he was recognized as the greatest known practitioner of wind, fire, and earth magic respectively. Cadner became jealous of the recognition that Mathers received. Believing the nobleman to be a fraud, he decided to discredit Mathers in order to improve his own reputation.
Deciding to test his would-be rival using the Nest of the White Fox, Cadner snuck into the gardens of Mathers's primary mansion and awaited his opportunity. He eventually spied Mathers walking down one of the halls of the mansion with a maid and managed to trap both of them within the metia. As he awaited the completion of the test, Cadner's hiding place was discovered by a half-elven woman named Emilia. Cadner thought Emilia was a Witch, as she resembled the famous Witch of Envy who had nearly destroyed the world centuries ago before being defeated and sealed.
Emilia was more curious than suspicious about Cadner's sudden appearance and invited him to join her for snacks under a gazebo. Seeing as she couldn't find any of the usual servants, Emilia prepared refreshments for Cadner herself. A young girl named Beatrice and a cat-like spirit named Puck joined them for the tea party. Cadner deduced that Puck was the contracted spirit of Emilia, who was a spirit mage, and that there was more to Beatrice than simply being a little girl. He grew nervous because he knew he would be unable to fend off the three of them while his mana was preoccupied with the metia.
As be began explaining to Emilia that he had business with Lord Mathers, the mage in question arrived with a maid in tow. Cadner was shocked, as he thought he had locked away the nobleman and his maid. As Mathers and Puck began to question Cadner, the Nest of the White Fox glowed and released its captives. As it turned out, Cadner had mistaken a servant named Subaru Natsuki for Lord Roswaal and trapped him instead. While everyone had their attention on Natsuki and the other maid, Cadner used the metia on Mathers and trapped him.
He began to celebrate his victory until Natsuki pointed out that Rem, the maid he had been trapped with, had managed to free herself and him from the metia. As such Mathers, who had trained Rem in magic, would have no issue escaping the box. As Natsuki predicted, Mathers effortlessly broke out of the metia. Mathers offered Cadner a chance to prove his strength, though only if he could defeat Rem first. Cadner accepted and prepared to fight the maid. However, as soon as the fight began, Rem rushed forward and blindsided Cadner with a punch to the face that knocked him out.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Magic: Cadner was a skilled enough mage to perform twofold magic which, as the name implied, allowed him to cast two separate spells simultaneously.
- Magic Negation: Using his own gate, Cadner was capable of manipulating the properties of any magic spell he came into physical contact with. Doing so essentially allowed him to dissemble an enemy's cast spell into harmless mana particles. Negating a spell by rewriting its composition was risky as it required immense magical prowess and needed to be done instantaneously. In the event that Cadner made contact with a harmful spell and failed to nullify it quick enough, then it would result in him receiving the spell's full destructive force with no time to deploy other countermeasures. The technique was so difficult to perform that, aside from Cadner, only Roswaal Mathers was known to be capable of it.
- Temperature Manipulation
- Voice Manipulation
- Water Manipulation: Using water magic, Cadner was capable of conjuring and telekinetically manipulating water.
Equipment[]
- Nest of the White Fox
