Joaquín Torres, also known as Falcon, is a character and superhero from Marvel Comics.
He was kidnapped by the Sons of the Serpent and experimented on by Dr. Karl Marlus, mutating his DNA with Sam Wilson's aviating partner Redwing. Now a falcon-human hybrid, Torres can sprout wings and gained a regenerative healing factor due to Redwing's vampiric qualities. He also became the new Falcon after saving Wilson from the Serpent Society, and later joined the Champions to stop threats.
He was created by Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuña, and first appeared in a photograph of comic issue Captain America: Sam Wilson #1 in October of 2015, but made his full appearance in Captain America: Sam Wilson #3 in November of that same year.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Little is known of Joaquín Torres' past, but he was born in Mexico to Esperanza Torres and an unnamed father, whose status is currently unknown. When he was six years old, his family moved to the United States in Sonoita, Arizona, and Joaquín later graduated on the honor roll. Growing up, he cared for the Mexican community and helped those who crossed the border by leaving them water and supplies.
Kidnapped[]
The villainous organization, Sons of the Serpent, were kidnapping people across the border and sending them to Doctor Karl Malus for his experiments. Taken to his headquarters in New York, Torres was experimented on by the doctor with Sam Wilson's partner Redwing and its DNA. The teenager was thus turned into a human-falcon hybrid, and also developed aspects of a vampire after it was revealed that Redwing is vampiric. Wilson (currently Captain America) was informed of Joaquín's disappearance by his family, and saved the teenager from the doctor and kept him under his care. In addition, Torres' mutations didn't revert like the others who were experimented on, allowing his newfound powers to develop.
Becoming Falcon[]
When the Serpent Society kidnapped Wilson and threw him off a building, Redwing informed Torres of the situation by using their shared psychic link. He was able to save Wilson by using his wings and fought against several Serpent Society members, as Sam used his link to transmit fighting moves for Joaquín. After defeating the threat with the assistance of Misty Knight and Demolition Man, Torres became the new Falcon and Sam's sidekick. While operating with his partner, Joaquín joined the teenage superhero team, the Champions, and helped them fight against supervillains such as Blackheart. At some point after Steve Rogers' return, Wilson returned to the Falcon mantle but shared it with Torres.
During the Secret Empire storyline, Falcon joined the Underground to fight against HYDRA's control over the United States under Hydra Supreme. When Miles Morales had a vision of him killing Rogers, Falcon and the team met with Black Widow to stop their friend. Under Widow's leadership, they formed the Red Room and received training from the spy. The conflict ended with Captain America of their reality defeated his villainous counterpart, thus freeing the United States from HYDRA's control.
