My mother told me you once made a vow to her, that you would do anything to help her, no matter what. (...) Does that vow extend to Gremlin's kits? Because I could do with a warrior's help right now...
~ Fang asking Graystripe for help.

Fang is a minor character in the Warriors series, serving as a supporting character in the super edition Graystripe's Vow. He was born to the ex-BloodClan she-cat Gremlin, and was raised in a twoleg house overcrowded with cats before escaping. He later went back to save his ill mate Daffodil, but she unfortunatly passed away from her sickness. Afterwards, he became the first deputy of WarriorClan, a group of kittypets who had formed their own Clan.

Appearance[]

Fang is skinny tom with emerald green eyes. He has fluffy gray fur with patches of darker gray. He has a bald patch near one of his front paws.

Biography[]

In a house owned by an elderly twoleg who hoards many cats, Gremlin gives birth to a litter of three kits, naming one of them Honeysuckle. He grows up hearing stories from his mother about how she and her brother Scraps fled from BloodClan when she was pregnant, looking for somewhere safe for her children to be raised. The two found ThunderClan, and their substitute leader Graystripe agreed to take them in, though Gremlin left the Clan shortly after BloodClan attacked and Scraps was killed. Honeysuckle also becomes mates with another one of his owner's cats; an orange-and-white she-cat named Daffodil.

Due to their owner being unable to take care of so many cats, both Gremlin and Daffodil soon fall terribly ill. Gremlin soon dies from this sickness, but before she does, she tells her son about a small hole in one of the walls he can escape from, urging him to help free his fellow kittypets as well. After his mother's death, Honeysuckle escapes and renames himself Fang. He's determined to find Graystripe, believing the ThunderClan warrior can help him save his mate and former housemates.

Fang goes to the mountains and finds the Tribe of Rushing Water, mistaking them for a Clan and asking if they know where Graystripe is. A few of the Tribe cats don't know who he's talking about, but one of them, a gray tom named Stormfur, reveals to Fang that he's Graystripe's son. He wonders why the rogue is looking for his father, and once Fang explains the situation, he says that he hasn't seen him in a long time, so Fang continues his search.

Later, after the connection to StarClan via the Moonpool is cut off, Graystripe travels to the Clans' old territories to try reaching them from the Moonstone. He runs into Fang on the way there, and WarriorClan, who tagged along with the elderly tom, are hostile toward the rogue. Graystripe tells him that they're just passing through, and he responds that he's not looking for trouble either, before asking if the tom is Graystripe, saying he looked just how he though he would. The ThunderClan cat wonders if this was the rogue Stormfur said had been looking for him during his recent visit to the Tribe, while also feeling something familiar about Fang, but unable to place what. Fang says that they've never met, but his mother Gremlin told him about the warrior. He asks if the vow he made to help Gremlin extends to her offspring, as he needs the help of a warrior.

Fang then explains how he escaped from an overcrowded house and had been looking for Graystripe ever since, and the gray tom thinks that he wants to come back to ThunderClan with him, but he says that he wants to go back to the house. He tells the older tom that there are still cats he cares about in there that he needs to free, such as his sick mate. He says that daffodil smells odd and has trouble breathing, and he's desperate to get her out of there. Graystripe initially declines, worrying that the mission could be too dangerous, but then changes his mind and promises to help after he's gone to the Moonstone.

Fang and the cats of WarriorClan go with Graystripe to the Moonstone, a trip during which the old tom notes the rogue's resemblance to his mom. He then asks Fang if he's hungry, and the younger tom says no, but with some pressuring he admits that he's starving. Graystripe takes not of Fang's skinniness, and catches a rabbit for everyone to share. Most of WarriorClan then go back to their owners for the night, with Clawwhistle and the Clan's leader Monkeystar staying as they reach the cave holding the Moonstone. Graystripe orders the other to wait outside while he goes in, and when Fang asks who StarClan is, he's informed that they're the deceased ancestors of the Clans. As Graystripe heads inside the cave, Monkeystar tells him to yowl if he needs them, and Fang adds that they'll be ready.

When Graystripe comes out, Fang asks what happened, and the elder says in bewilderment that the Moonstone exploded. Monkeystar then suggests they go to Barley on the farm, as he's a wise cat that could help them. On the way there, Fang asks Graystripe if he's his father, as he never knew who Gremlin's mate was. Graystripe says that he isn't, and he was never mates with his mother, to which Fang's tail droops in disappointment. He wonders what would have happened if he'd said yes, but knows that they'd both pay for that lie, and hopes the rogue will some day find his father like he found him. They then reach the farm and Graystripe introduces Fang and Barley to each other. Fang then helps to hunt for his peers, feeling proud of himself when he catches four mice. He then asks Barley if he knew Gremlin since they were once both cats of BloodClan, and he confirms that he did, describing her as a harsh and violent cat that loved her brother and kits more than anything.

The next morning, Fang asks Graystripe if he knew how his mother died, and when he says no, the rogue says that she had been taken in by a kind old twoleg, and had lived happily with a few other cats there. A while after she gave birth, his two littermates had been given away to other twolegs, and he would sometimes see them in the gardens of their new homes. However, as the twoleg got older, she began bringing in more and more cats, and took less care of them as a result. One day Gremlin got sick from the filthy house, and nothing could be done to cure her. With her last breathes, she told her son about a way out and had him promise that he'd come back and free the others. He becomes desperate to save his old housemates as soon as possible, but the others convince him to stay on more night in the barn.

The next morning, Graystripe and Fang head over to the house, with the former telling Monkeystar and Clawwhistle to take care of Barley for them while they're gone. When they reach the house, Graystripe is in disbelief at the grim state of it, and Fang says there must be at least ten or fifteen cats inside, but it's hard for him to keep count. They make a plan to get inside, with Fang helping Graystripe, but the older tom is unable to get out. Fang the freezes in fear, and Graystripe reassures him that it'll be ok as he tries not to panic. The ThunderClan cat then tries getting out through a hole in the wall, but one of the housecats named Petunia says that it won't work, as many of them have tried before. He tells the rogue that it's no use, and he'll have to thinks of something else. He then meets Daffodil, who asks how her mate is doing, and tells her that he's trying to get them all out of there.

Graystripe starts to worry that Fang had abandoned the mission until the younger gray tom returns with WarriorClan. They get the trapped kittypets out through a loose floorboard, and once they're out he tells them that he'll show them how to survive in the wild. Daffodil then tells her mate that she's too weak to go with him, but he tries to deny this, calming that she's stronger than she thinks. She insists that they go on without her, but he retorts that he's willing to risk it all as long as the two of them are together. However, he eventually comes to accept the truth and sorrowfully says his goodbyes to Daffodil, having to leave her behind.

As night falls and the group turns in, Fang sadly asks Graystripe what he's going to do now without Daffodil, as she was the only one who made living in the house bearable after Gremlin's death. Remembering the deaths of his own mates Silverstream and Millie, Graystripe empathizes with Fang and tells him that a cat will lose many loved ones in their lifetime. He states that grief and setbacks are like enemies, and can be put behind if fought, adding that as his heartbreak heals, Fang's memories of Daffodil will become less depressing and more comforting. Afterwards, Fang decides to join WarriorClan, with Monkeystar appointing him as her deputy. He's unsure he'll be fit for the role until Graystripe assures him that he's a skilled hunter and fighter, and that his new Clanmates already look up to him. After Petunia is made into WarriorClan's medicine cat, Graystripe decides to finally begin his long journey home. Fang asks if he wants to stay, and the old tom says that it would be nice, but if he did the the Clan would look up to him instead of Fang, Monkeystar and Petunia. As he leaves, he tells the deputy that he would have been proud to have him as his son.

A moon later in the epilogue, Monkeystar worries that fang is a better leader than she is and may want to take her role. When she goes on a patrol to look for Petunia, he offers to join her, but she tells him that he's the Clan's best fighter and needs to stay in camp in case of an attack. After Petunia is brough home, Fang notes that Monkeystar's efforts to cheer the medicine cat up have worked, and tells her that her compassion for her Clan will make her a fine leader.
