Hero Overview

Boys, it is your Christian duty to save the souls of your friends!
~ Father Maxi in "Probably".
No I didn't! All that's dead are your stupid laws and rules! You've forgotten what being a Catholic is all about. This... book. You see, these are just stories. Stories that are meant to help guide people in the right direction. Love your neighbor. Be a good person. That's it! And when you start turning the stories into literal translations of hierarchies and power, well... Well, you end up with this. People are losing faith because they don't see how what you've turned the religion into applies to them! They've lost touch with any idea of any kind of religion, and when they have no mythology to try and live their lives by, well, they just start spewing a bunch of crap out of their mouths! Look, I, I'm proud to be a Catholic. But I'm a Catholic in the real world. In today's world! It's time for you all to do that, too. It is time... for change.
~ Maxi giving a telecast speech in "Red Hot Catholic Love".

Father Maxi is a recurring character in the adult animated sitcom South Park. He is either a protagonist or an antagonist depending on the episode.

He is a Roman Catholic priest who serves as the mouthpiece for South Park's Christian community. He runs the South Park Church.

Personality[]

Father Maxi is a massively hypocritical fire and brimstone Christian fundamentalist whose unwavering belief is that most people are damned for Hell due to humans' sinful nature. He bluntly states that Timmy Burch would go to Hell, since Timmy cannot confess his sins, as he cannot speak anything fluently, and tells Kyle that he will certainly go the Hell because he is Jewish. Despite being very quick to judge others as being worthy of Hell in the eyes of God, he is a very selfish and immoral priest, who also seems to know very little about the religion he worships, as he seems to barely even know who Jesus is, meaning he does not know the difference between Christianity and Judaism and follows his faith blindly.

Per his beliefs, he also takes an anti-LGBT stance, and as a priest, believes it is his duty to convert homosexual people into heterosexuals. A good indicator of this is how in “Cripple Fight”, he wanted to convert Big Gay Al to become heterosexual. However, he has had sex with men and women alike, breaking both his vow of celibacy and his belief that any form of sodomy is a sin.

Despite being a parody of both the corruption and fanatacism of many Christians, Father Maxi is shown to have standards. He is remarkably the only Catholic priest in the show to not be a pedophile, and becomes apalled when he hears that other Catholic priests have no desire to stop molesting boys. He decides to take it upon himself to change the law, traveling all the way to Vatican City, and while it is unclear if he changed anything, he ends up giving a speech about how Catholicism is supposed to be about being a good person, becoming a genuine voice of reason. His position as the ministers of funerals and weddings suggest that Maxi is a talented speaker, able to bring solace to the families of deceased loved ones. In "Follow That Egg", he ministers the marriage of Big Gay Al and Mr. Slave, suggesting that he may have truly reformed.

He later appears again in "A Boy and a Priest", very remorseful about doing nothing about the corruption of the Catholic Church for so long. Overall, after seeing from other Catholics the flaws of his behavior, he has become a genuinely decent person at heart that seems to always have the best interest in his congregation, especially the kids at heart, and shows a great act of atonement by rescuing kids from the Catholic Cleanup Crew. However, due to the nature of the show and his infrequent appearances, it is unclear if his personality will remain consistent.
