To grieve deeply... is to have loved fully. Open your heart to the world as you have opened it to me, and you will find every reason to keep living in it.
~ Faye to her husband, Kratos.

Laufey, better known as Faye, is the overarching protagonist of the Norse Saga in God of War. Originally a Jotunn warrior from Jotunheim, Faye met Kratos years after the latter's decimation of Greece, eventually becoming his second wife and the mother of their son, Atreus. Due to her last wish to scatter her ashes at the highest peak of the Nine Realms, Kratos and Atreus undertake the journey which bring them in conflict with the Aesir.

She is portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll, who also played Karen Page in the MCU Netflix TV shows. In the Japanese dub of the game, she is voiced by Haruka Shimizu.

Personality[]

Faye used to be a vengeful warrior due to her desire for vengeance against the Aesir, for which she came into blows several times with Thor. Despite that, she forgoed her vengeance as she decided to settle down with Kratos after they fought during their first meeting. Eventually realizing that the giants decreed that Kratos must die for Loki to destroy Asgard in vengeance, she slowly went against them to save her family.

At her core, she is an exceptionally loving and compassionate person. Despite learning of the obliteration of Greece caused by Kratos, she saw the loving man he once was, buried under his rage and pain, and helped him become that man again. He also helped her, as she found a sense of fulfillment with him, increased by the birth of their son, Atreus. She understood that Odin had to be stopped, but chose a path of building a loving family, over building an army. Her loving nature had a lasting impact on Kratos and Atreus, as while they would be forced to kill, they tried to find a path of least bloodshed, which meant the prophecised Ragnarök ended with much less devastation than would have happened in the Giant's original plan.

She was extraordinarily charismatic, as any who met her became fond of her, and admired her; even during her days as a ruthless warrior, she still held the trait that rallied people in support of her. She was also a playful person, as shown in conversations about death with Kratos, she makes witty remarks about his intended burial customs, which were not just to be glib, but also help comfort his fear over losing another family members.

She knew of her impending demise, but instead of fearing it or falling into despair, she savoured every moment she had with Kratos and Atreus, both for her own joy and their preparation for a life after her, so they could be grateful for the time they had, not grieve for the time they lost. While father and son faced difficulties in upholding the positive lesson she intended, eventually her memory gave them the opportunity to be their best selves.

History[]

Faye was a descendant of Ymir and Bergelmir, the founder of the Giants, while also distantly related to Odin and the Aesir.

After Odin betrayed the Jotunn and killed most of them alongside Thor, Faye swore vengeance against them and went on the warpath against the Aesir, fighting Thor and Odin several times, matching Thor in ferocity. When Groa made the prophecy of Ragnarok, Faye initially was in support of it due to the destruction of the Aesir.

Several years later, Faye met Kratos, who arrived in the Norse Realm from Greece, and fought him to a draw, almost killing each other. After the fight, Kratos and Faye decided to calm down, as she advised him to settle in Midgard.
