Hero Overview

Ah, nyow I see... Of course.
~ Felix Argyle

Felix Argyle, known as Ferris in informal settings and also as the Blue, is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World as well as its anime television series & manga adaptations of the same name. Outside of the main series, Ferris is the main protagonist of The Dream of the Lion King and the tritagonist of The Great Journeys, the first and fourth volumes of the spin-off light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Ex respectively.

A demi-human cat-boy, Felix Argyle loyally served Duchess Crusch Karsten as her personal knight and attendant. Because of a promise involving Crusch and the late Prince Fourier Lugunica, Felix, who insisted on being called Ferris in all but the most formal of occasions, dressed and acted like a woman. Alongside the Sword Demon Wilhelm van Astrea, Ferris was a chief supporter of Crusch in her campaign to become the forty-second ruler of the Kingdom of Lugunica.

Unlike the other men who served as the personal knights (except Subaru Natsuki) of the other candidates for the throne, Ferris was not a capable combatant worthy of defending his master. Instead, Ferris was a masterful healer, heralded as the greatest wielder of water magic in the Kingdom of Lugunica. Because of his skill, many people flocked to Ferris from all over in search of his medical expertise.

Ferris is voiced by Yui Horie (Horie's other heroic roles include Carla in Fairy Tail, Wiz in KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!, and Riko Izayoi in Pretty Girl All Stars!. Williams' other heroic roles include Mirai Sarutobi in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Lisbeth in Sword Art Online, Nonon Jakuzure in Kill la Kill, and Sayaka Miki in Puella Magi Madoka Magica) in Japanese and by Sarah Ann Williams in English.

Background[]

The House of Argyle was a small noble household that existed within the Kingdom of Lugunica and served as a vassal to the greater House of Karsten. The aptitude for water magic was a common trait displayed by members of the Argyle lineage. Bean Argyle, the head of the House of Argyle, had an affair with one of the maids of his home which resulted in the birth of Felix Argyle. However, as the affair was kept secret, it was assumed that Bean's wife was Felix's mother. Rather inexplicably, Felix Argyle was born with demi-human blood and visible features in the form of cat ears and a tail. The Kingdom of Lugunica had recently suffered a brutal civil war known as the Demi-Human War where its demi-human population had formed a massive rebellion against the governing body. Felix's parents, fearful that the sudden appearance of a demi-human in the family would indicate that the House of Argyle had some form of demi-human ancestry, attempted to hide Felix's existence from the world in the cruellest of ways.

Bean and his wife locked Felix in their dungeon-like basement shortly after birth, only bequeathing him with the sustenance needed to survive and a basic education. When Felix grew older, the size of his room and his pleasantries were both reduced even further. Because of the malnutrition Felix endured, his growth and strength were both permanently stunted. After several dark rumors about the House of Argyle arose, the Duke of Karsten Meckart Karsten and his young daughter Crusch Karsten went to investigate the household.

The nine year old Felix was finally discovered by Crusch, who freed him and brought him into the light for the first time in his life. The cruelty perpetrated on Felix by his parents did not go unpunished, as the favor of the House of Karsten was officially revoked and the House of Argyle's prosperity and credibility both quickly declined. Felix was adopted into the House of Karsten as an attendant for the young lady Crusch, whom he felt eternally grateful to.

Through Crusch, Felix met Fourier Lugunica, the fourth prince of Lugunica who had deep romantic feelings for Karsten despite their young age. Alongside Crusch's father, Fourier and Karsten became the most important people in the world to Ferris. Because of some sort of promise involving Fourier, Crusch began dressing and acting more masculine while Ferris began dressing and acting more feminine. As a demi-human, Felix was occasionally subject to discrimination, although he always faced it with courage and strength despite his daintiness.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Demi-Human Traits: Due to the demi-human blood flowing through his veins, Felix's sensory organs were significantly enhanced past the limitations displayed by most humans. His cat-like ears in particular were able to detect the slightest change in her surroundings to the point that he could tell when someone turned to look at him. Because of his excellent hearing, he could always tell when someone was approaching him, with the exception of Reinhard van Astrea.
  • Water Magic: Despite its name, water magic was actually based around the regulation of life and rejuvenation rather than the manipulation of liquids. That being said, practitioners of water magic were still able to generate and manipulate water and ice, although Ferris himself never displayed the ability to do so. The House Argyle boasted a lineage of impressive water mages, and Ferris inherited the natural talent of his ancestors. In fact, Felix was so competent with water magic that the government of Lugunica officially recognized him as the greatest water mage in the Kingdom, bestowing him the title of the "Blue" as recognition of that fact. He was apparently the youngest ever mage to earn the title of the Blue.
    • Healing: By channelling water mana through a person's body, a water mage could stimulate a patient's natural healing capabilities to speed up recoveries. Healing magic could help restore an injured body or cure a target of any ailment they might have within an instant. That being said, healing magic could only treat physical wounds and ailments whilst having no affect on mental afflictions. The skill, talent, and raw power of the mage using healing magic naturally affected the effectiveness of the treatment. Ferris was a healing prodigy who was considered to the greatest healer in the Kingdom if not the world. He could, with little effort, instantly bring someone back to perfect health from the brink of death. A gravely wounded person could be completely wounded by Felix without so much as a scar to show. Ferris could even seamlessly reattach lost limbs such as when he reattached Crusch's forearm after it had been cleanly severed by Regulus of Greed. There were however a couple of known afflictions that not even Felix could heal including the illness that felled the entire Lugunican Royal Family and the infection caused by Capella of Lust's corrupted blood. Additionally, the target of Felix's healing magic needed to still have an ember of life within them for him to be able to save them, as even someone who had only recently passed away could not be rejuvenated by Ferris.
    • Reanimation: The "Sacrament of the Immortal King" was the name of a powerful and ancient water magic spell invented by a Witch eons ago who used the power to enthral the world. It allowed the user to resurrect a person and restore them to how they were during their life. After the Witch's death a majority of the ritual was forgotten, making it impossible to do anything more than to reanimate a corpse as a mindless zombie. The zombies created by the spell were completely loyal to their reanimator and anyone who the reanimator gave command rights to. The amount of zombies possible to reanimate was unknown, although it was at least over a hundred. Very few people were capable of using the spell on any level, namely members of the House of Argyle including Felix and his father Bean Argyle. Felix himself learned the spell from his family's magical tomes when his father tried to coerce him into resurrecting his wife. However, even though Ferris was able to restore a vestige of life into her body temporarily, Bean's wife quickly broke down into dust.
