Heroine Overview

I’m not like the people here in the slums. I have no intention of living out my life in these black alleys. I’m gonna live out my dreams!
~ Felt.

Lady Felt (whose birth name is unknown), also known as the Golden Lion, is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a minor character in the 2019 non-canon comedy crossover anime television series Isekai Quartet.

Felt was the youngest of the five candidates to become the ruler of the Kingdom of Lugunica following the demise of the Lugunican Royal Family. Believed to be the late King's long-lost niece, she lived as a common thief in the slums of the capital until she was discovered by her future knight Reinhard van Astrea. Rambunctious and often uncouth, yet intuitive and wise for her age, Felt's upbringing inspired her to reshape Lugunica in favor of the downtrodden poor.

Felt is voiced by Chinatsu Akasaki in Japanese and by Christine Marie Cabanos in English. Akasaki has also voiced Seong Mi-Na in Soulcaliber VI and Shinka Nibutani in Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. Cabanos has also voiced Silica in Sword Art Online, Sailor Saturn in Sailor Moon, Mako Mankanshoku in Kill la Kill, Shiemi Moriyama in Blue Exorcist, and Ivan Whisky in Cyborg 009 VS Devilman.

Appearance[]

Felt stood at precisely five feet tall, making her exactly one foot short than Reinhard van Astrea. Her longish golden hair was tied up and her crimson eyes betrayed the girl's strong sense of will. Her one canine tooth jutted out of her mouth, giving her the impression of a prankster. During her stay in the slums, Felt was naturally unkempt and filthy. Although she gave off the impression of cheekiness more than anything else, Subaru Natsuki noticed that she would look pretty cute with a smile on her face.

The golden hair and red eyes Felt exhibited were both traits that were commonly found in members of the dissolved Lugunican Royal Family. In Felt's case, in the event that she was a long lost member of the royalty, the color of her hair and eyes were presumably inherited from her late alleged father Prince Fold Lugunica. Additionally, the prominence of her canine teeth was an irregularity shared with her alleged late elder first cousin, Prince Fourier Lugunica.

As a slum dweller who grew up in poverty, all of her clothing was worn and dirtied in someway, as she couldn't afford the luxury of properly maintaining an outfit. Her clothing, that was gifted to her by Old Man Rom, consisted of black tights that were partially ripped on the left side, a pair of brown gloves with fluffy white interiors, brown shoes, a long red scarf with symbols representing the wind at its ends, an oversized brown belt with white lines, a small black tube top that covered nothing except her breasts, and a small brown jacket over her tube top that had fluffy white trimmings. Additionally, she had a red ribbon tied around her left ankle and a larger black ribbon adorned on top of her head. Naturally, she stopped wearing her slum clothes soon after she was taken in by Reinhard. During her stay in the Astrea mansion before the Royal Selection ceremony, Felt was forced to wear a variety of dresses that were usually yellow and all of fine make.

During the Royal Selection ceremony, Felt wore a beautiful outfit hand-picked by the Master Swordsman himself. The dress in question was, like the clothing she wore around the Astrea mansion, primarily light-yellow like her hair. The dress had off-the-shoulder sleeves, a wide-hemmed floor-length yellow skirt, and a white petticoat. It's corset-like bodice was primarily black with orange lining and featured a set of four small orange ribbons descending down its center. A black and orange ribbon was fastened to her chest and two more of the same likeness were attached to the front of her skirt. On her arms, Felt wore a pair of long white opera gloves with black bands at the top. Tied around her neck by a band was a beautiful red gem that matched the crimson color of her eyes. On her legs Felt wore a pair of knee-high orange boots that each had a set of four small black ribbons travelling up their shafts.

Personality[]

Felt was very much a product of her upbringing. Her difficult life taught her at a young age that it was better to rely on herself than those around her, as almost everyone in her walk of life acted with self-interest. Although Felt's life in the slums was not the best, she still felt pride in the fact that she had braved the harsh conditions of her early life and came out a strong independent person. She firmly believed that anyone who lacked pride in the life they lived had no reason to continue living, a belief that was ironically in line with that harbored by Lugunica's nobles. She didn't agree with the concept of fate, as she saw the existence of an individual that decided every aspect of a person's life as a horrible concept. She also disliked people who leaned too heavily on fate, as she believed they merely used fate as a scapegoat to blame all of their misfortunes and problems on. She firmly considered fate as something that took away a person's ambitions and dreams, as the very concept would make a person entrust their entire life to chance rather than deciding anything for themselves.

She had little respect for authoritative figures, as in her experience powerful people ignored and discarded the destitute and needy such as herself and the people around her. Towards the most important people in the world, Felt refused to bend her abrasive attitude or change her manner of speech. Not even the Council of Elders that ruled over Lugunica in place of the monarchy were able to command any semblance of respect from the thief girl. During the opening ceremony for the Royal Selection, Felt was unafraid to voice her grievances with the system of government in front of the people who ran it, nor was she unwilling to complain about the knights and the noblemen while a large assembly from both groups were present. She despised the system of government and the wealthy born from it so much that her primary objective was to win the Royal Selection and become the ruler of Lugunica so that she could dismantle the current system in place and replace it with one more favorable towards the poor people that continued to suffer.

History[]

The Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica, alongside the Empire of Volakia, the Holy Kingdom of Gusteko, and the city-state Kararagi, was considered one of the four great nations of the world. Lugunica was protected from external threats and nurtured by the Holy Dragon Volcanica due to a pact made between the legendary beast and the Last Lion King Falseil Lugunica four hundred years ago. As long as the lineage of the king prevailed, Volcanica would continue to watch over the Kingdom. It was within the great nation of Lugunica that a girl bearing blond hair and crimson eyes was born. The girl never knew her real parents, as she was raised in the slums of Lugunica's capital by a kindly giant known as Old Man Rom who named her Felt. Felt's life wasn't an easy one, as she struggled to procure food and warmth for herself on a daily basis. At some point Felt turned to thieving to support herself, as she viewed it as a better alternative than selling her body. Her dream was to one day earn enough money to leave the slums of the capital and start a proper life with her only family, Rom.

At the age of fifteen, a black-haired woman approached Felt to make business. The woman informed Felt that a young lady with silver hair and white robes would appear in the bustling merchant district at a certain time of day. Felt's job was to steal a Jewel that the silver-haired girl carried on her person and deliver it the black-haired woman, who would rendezvous with her at Old Man Rom's loothouse. Without any questions, Felt accepted the request, as the reward was ten holy coins, a sum that would surely secure her freedom. Felt quickly found her target and initially felt bad for her, as she could tell the white-robed woman was from the country and intimidated by the capital's bustling streets. Gazing around, she noticed several of her slum-dwelling kin also poised to take the treasure. However, one by one, the others trailing the woman departed. Felt quickly realized that there was more to her target then met the eye, as an intimidating aura of magical energy surrounded her. Before she could act, another stranger bumped into the woman, sneakily stealing her coin purse in the process.

Worried that her prize may be located in the purse, Felt pursued the thief into a back alley. Although she had intended to take the purse back herself, the thief had ran into a finely-dressed elderly man who wielded a sword to the thug's throat. After taking the coin pouch from the thief, the old man let him go. He then turned his attention to Felt lurking in the shadows and asked her to return the purse to its owner as undisclosed reasons prevented him from doing so. Felt dishonestly agreed to do so, earning the satisfaction of the old man who wandered back onto the main road. Opening the purse, Felt was irritated to learn the Jewel was not inside. Returning to the main street, Felt continued to stalk her target. As she did, she began to notice more and more how kind the woman was. Remembering what was at stake, Felt steeled her resolve and jumped down from the rooftops. With the wind by her back, Felt dashed past her target, taking the Jewel out of her white robe with lightning speed. The woman, who was quick to notice the theft, used her magical power to fire icicles at Felt. Narrowly avoiding the projectiles, Felt slunk into a back alley as the woman gave frantic chase.

The woman was persistent in her pursuit, prompting Felt to dash through many streets in her attempt to shake her. Running down a back alley, Felt encountered a trio of thugs beating a defenseless boy who looked a couple of years older than her. Felt felt bad for the boy who looked at her with hopeful eyes, apologising as she ran past him and over a wall. Ultimately, Felt was successful in shaking her target when the silver-haired woman took time to save the boy from the thugs. The young thief girl made her way over to the loothouse, where the black-haired woman eventually arrived for the exchange. However, in her greed, Felt tried to get her employer to pay her more coins. Growing tired of Felt's antics, the black-haired woman murdered the street orphan as well as Rom when he tried to jump to her defense. Later on, the silver-haired girl and the boy she had saved tracked Felt to the loothouse, only to find the employer's handiwork. The black-haired woman, who was still in the building, also killed both of Felt's pursuers. Unbeknownst to everyone however, the boy had an ability called "Return by Death" that rewound time every time he was killed. In this case, time was rewound to before Felt had stolen the Jewel. However, with the exception of the boy, nobody including Felt could remember the time before the rewind.

Joining the Royal Selection[]

Fate's Calling[]

Felt awoke two days later in an unfamiliar luxurious bedroom and was startled by Reinhard, who was standing at the room's threshold. She quickly discovered that she was naked (as her clothes had been taken away to be washed) and began to fear the worst. Hoping to allay her fears, Reinhard revealed that they were in a mansion in the upper part of the capital that belonged to his family and then began to explain why he had abducted her. Astrea showed Felt an insignia identical to the one she had stolen from Emilia, and explained that it was part of a set which only glowed when held by those who were chosen by fate.

Felt didn't believe in fate, and was uninterested in continuing the conversation. She demanded that Reinhard give her her clothes back so that she could return to her home in the slums. Astrea refused her request though, stating that citizens of Lugunica such as herself had to present themselves to the royal castle if they made one of the insignias glow. He informed Felt that she would be confined to his home until the castle summoned her. Felt tried to argue that Lugunica hadn't ever done anything for her, so the Kingdom had no rite to command her. Seeing that Reinhard wasn't shaking on the issue, she decided a different tactic.

ReZero Felt Imprisonment Short Story

Felt reluctantly trying on dresses for Reinhard and Carol Remendes.

Taking advantage of his chivalry and bashfulness, Felt managed to make Reinhard avert his eyes from her by drawing attention to the issue of her nakedness. As soon as he turned away from her, Felt bolted towards the open window and threw her bedding at him to cover her escape. She had already evaluated that the room she was in was no more than one floor above ground. By the time Felt had fallen to the ground floor outside an instant later however, Reinhard had beaten her there with his incomprehensible speed. He caught Felt in his arms and teasingly mentioned that the building had stairs that she could use instead.

As he carried Felt back to the room, Reinhard promised her that if she managed to escape the grounds of the mansion before the castle called on her then he would not pursue her. Felt was then introduced to the elderly caretakers of the house, Carol Remendes and her mute husband Grimm Fauzen. She was given a selection of new clothes by Remendes which, much to her annoyance, were stuffy aristocratic dresses. Over the next ten days, Felt tried to escape nearly a dozen times, although each attempt was foiled by Reinhard, Remendes, or Fauzen regardless of the strategy she employed or the time of day.

Days in the Astrea Mansion[]

While wandering around the house one day, Felt walked passed the one door in the mansion that was always closed. Curious, Felt entered the poorly-lit room and discovered a beautiful woman sleeping in a bed. At first she believed that the woman was an abductee who was being confined by Reinhard similarly to her. Astrea, who had been away that day, suddenly appeared at the entrance to the room with a solemn look on his face. He explained that the woman was his mother Louanna Astrea, who had been afflicted with a mysterious sickness that caused those affected by it to fall into an eternal slumber in which they never aged.

Louanna had been asleep for seventeen years, since the time Reinhard was two years old. Felt was annoyed by Astrea, who was talking about his mother's situation in a matter-of-fact way. She left the room in disgust, but was followed by Reinhard who told her that he had gone to check on Old Man Rom, who had escaped the capital's guardhouse sometime ago while he was receiving treatment for his wounds. Pleased by the news that Rom was alive and well, Felt begrudgingly assured Reinhard that she didn't believe he was making up the story about his mother, as she thought he had the same beautiful face as Louanna.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Superhuman Speed: Felt was one of the lucky few to possess a useful Divine Protection, a type of blessing bestowed seemingly at random on a person at birth by the source of the world's magic. The exact details regarding what Felt's unnamed blessing was capable of is currently unknown, however it seemed to be somewhat related to the wind. Elsa Granhiert called the blessing a "Divine Protection of the wind" when she saw it in action. Although the extent of the power remains unclear, it seemed to allow Felt to ride the wind around her, meaning she could dash around at incredible speed carried by the wind's momentum and traverse sheer terrain as if it were solid ground. The speed at which the wind carried her was so fast that it couldn't be detected by the untrained eye, although those skilled in combat could keep up with Felt's movements. Felt relied a lot on the Divine Protection, using it to move across the roofs of a city, defend herself from evil-doers, and swiftly pickpocket an unsuspecting victim.

Abilities[]

  • Adept Fighter: Having grown up in the rough slums of the capital, Felt taught herself how to fight from a young age in order to survive. Though not on the level of a warrior, Felt was deft with a short sword or knife and had strong intuition in combat. She could draw and wield her weapon with impressive speed and throw it at a target with skilful accuracy. As a result of both her trained physique and her Divine Protection, Felt could move with incredible swiftness that the untrained eye could barely even register.

Trivia[]

  • Although Felt's actual date of birth was unknown, she considered her birthday to be the 8th of August, the day Old Man Rom adopted her.
  • Shinichirou Otsuka, the illustrator and character designer for the Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World light novel series, considered Felt their favorite character to design. The reason they enjoyed drawing her so much was because they found her to be easy to draw in comparison to other characters. In fact, they were able to complete Felt's design in under an hour.
