Fenrir is a supporting character in the 2022 action-adventure fantasy video game, God of War Ragnarök. He was one of three wolves that belonged to Kratos and Atreus, along with Speki and Svanna. He passed away from an unknown illness before eventually being revived when his soul was transferred in the soulless Hel-Hound, Garm, transforming him into a giant wolf.

Personality[]

Fenrir is a loyal and obedience wolf. He shown affection towards his owners.

Overview[]

Fenrir is the elderly and sick wolf who is adopted by Atreus and Kratos as one of their three wolves. When Kratos and Atreus returned to the house after escaping from Freya, Atreus tries to feed Fenrir but no avails due to him dying. Fenrir's soul was transferred into Atreus' knife.

While Atreus and Kratos fighting against Garm (the giant soulless Hel-Beast wolf), Atreus transplanted Fenrir's soul into Garm. Fenrir affectionally licked Atreus and cleaning himself from the snow. Kratos ordered Fenrir to sit, which he obliged. When realizing of Giant magic, Kratos also ordered Fen to go back home where Fenrir creates a gateway to return to the house.

When Mimir asked Kratos and Atreus how did they managed to kill Garm, Atreus revealed he transfers Fenrir's soul into Garm. Mimir praised that a gigantic Hel-beast with a soul of a loyal pup.

After returning back to the house, Fenrir bites off a tree log and toss it to Atreus as a stick. Fenrir and Atreus later meets Angrboda (who would look after Fenrir for Atreus). During the war in Asgard, Fenrir participated to Ragnarok of helping his owners to destroy the Aesir's weapons and kills a dragon.

After the Ragnarok prophecy was fulfilled and Asgard's destruction, Atreus left Fenrir under Angrboda's care while he is off on his own. Fenrir is on Jotenheim. Kratos patting Fenrir and called him as good boy.

Powers and Abilities[]

Hel-Hound Physiology: Once a sickly mundane wolf, Fenrir later returned to life as a Hel-Hound after having his soul moved into Garm, effectively killing the out-of-control, soulless beast in the process once and for all whereas his owners and those before them failed, as well as granting him access the latter's powers.

  • Superhuman Strength: After inhabiting Garm's body as his own, Fenrir attained the latter's superhuman strength which he utilizes in great effect as seen when he killed a dragon.
  • Superhuman Speed: Since Garm was deceptively fast despite its size, it's no surprise Fenrir able to make use of it after taking over the Hel-Hound's body as his own with Atreus' help.
  • Dimensional Teleportation: Fenrir gains Garm's ability to open a rift as means to travel between realms after having his soul moved into the latter's body.
  • Reality Annihilation: Fenrir inherited Garm's trump card ability to destroy not just matter, but metaphysical and conceptual aspects of reality after having his soul moved into the latter's body, though he presumably chose not to use it given to his original nature as Atreus' loyal wolf pet.

Trivia[]

  • As with God of War series' iteration of Jörmungandr, this version of Fenrir is not wolf-jötunn son of Atreus/Loki and Angrboda like in myth. He's not the father of Sköll and Hati either — the two already born into Hróðvitnir, an unrelated wolf-jötunn whose other name Atreus presumably named after him.
    • That being said, this version of Fenrir is Atreus' beloved adoptive son in some respects since he cared for him during his early life as ordinary wolf who would later died from sickness and the grief from his first death resulted the young man to unknowingly transferred his soul into his knife. To further drive such point, Angrboda, upon correctly deducing the identity of the soul in his destined boyfriend's knife and that he still mourned Fenrir's death, she chose to tell Atreus to figure out the truth himself, which he eventually does by reincarnating his beloved wolf pet into Garm, the out-of-control giant wolf that the gods imprisoned at Helheim because of his destructive capabilities.
