Fezzik is a major character of The Princess Bride. He is a giant who, along with his friend Inigo Montoya, teams up with Westley to rescue Princess Buttercup. He was played by the late André the Giant.
Personality[]
Fezzik is a slow-witted but incredibly strong Greenland giant. The criminal Vizzini recruited him into his gang after finding him "friendless [and] brainless in Greenland". He becomes best friends with Vizzini's other minion, swordfighter Inigo Montoya, with whom he likes to play a game in which they rhyme each other's sentences.
Biography[]
Fezzik, Vizzini, and Inigo are hired to kidnap and murder Princess Buttercup, but a mysterious Man in Black follows them intent on "kidnapping what they have rightfully stolen". After defeating Inigo, the Man in Black fights Fezzik, who insists on a "sportsman-like" hand-to-hand fight instead of hitting him from behind with a rock. The Man in Black gets the better of Fezzik, however, cutting off his air supply until he passes out.
Fezzik later finds Inigo, drunk and miserable, and nurses him back to health. He tells his friend that the "Six-Fingered Man" who murdered Inigo's father, whom Inigo has been hunting for most of his life, is in fact a nobleman named Count Rugen who works for Prince Humperdinck, who hired them to kill Buttercup so he can start a war with the neighboring country of Guilder. Inigo deduces that the Man in Black - Buttercup's true love Wesley - will try to stop the wedding, and will thus lead him to Rugen.
When they find Wesley, however, he has been tortured by Rugen to the point that he is "mostly dead". They go to Miracle Max, the king's former Miracle Man, who gives them a potion to revive Wesley. Wesley regains consciousness, but is too weak to fight, so Fezzik dons a holocaust cloak and frightens Humperdinck's men away by pretending to be the legendary pirate The Dread Pirate Roberts. Once inside the castle, Fezzik helps Inigo pursue Rugen by knocking down a locked door.
Later, after Inigo has killed Rugen and Wesley has rescued Buttercup, Fezzik finds a brace of ponies for them to escape on. He then catches Buttercup as she leaps from the tower, and rides off into the sunset with his friends.
