“ | The one chosen by my creator. I have been waiting for you. You will play a role in a great destiny. According to your social customs, I should provide you with my personal designation. Fi is the name I was given. I was created for a single purpose, long before the recorded memory of your people. I must aid you in fulfilling the great destiny that is your burden to carry. | „ |
~ Fi explaining her purpose. |
“ | When I first awoke and began this task, I perceived it as merely serving my function as a servant to Her Grace. However, I have come to consider the information corresponding to our time together among the most precious data I have on record. I do not have the capability to fully understand the human spirit, Link… But now, at the end of my journey with you, as I prepare to sleep within the Master Sword forever, I experience a feeling I am unable to identify. I lack sufficient data to be sure of my conclusion, but I believe this feeling correlates closest to what your people call… happiness. Our partnership is at an end, and even as we speak, I feel my consciousness fading away. Before I enter the sleep that calls me to the sword, I wish to relay to you words that I recorded many times over the course of our journey. Many have said them to you thus far, but I now wish to say them for myself… Thank you, Master Link. May we meet again in another life… | „ |
~ Fi's farewell to the original Link before being sealed away. |
Fi is a major character in The Legend of Zelda video game series, appearing as the deuteragonist of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and a minor character in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
She is the spirit residing in the Goddess Sword who accompanies Link on his quest to stop Ghirahim and rescue Zelda. In the process, Fi guides Link into his role as the Chosen Hero and forms a close friendship with him.
Personality[]
Fi is a very intelligent and powerful sword spirit who is immensely loyal and helpful to her allies. In spite of this, however, she admits herself that she struggles with registering and expressing human emotions, although she is capable of detecting them in others such as Ghirahim and Link, and admits to Link that although she doesn't understand it completely, she felt happy assisting him on his journey and with her role as the Master Sword. In spite of her rather apathetic nature, Fi is always fighting on the side of good and doesn't hesitate to do what she thinks is the right course of action. She is also fiercely loyal to Link's other incarnations, with the Link from Breath of the Wild being a prominent example as she communicates with Princess Zelda to take Link to the Shrine of Resurrection, which shows that she refused to let him fall so soon while Calamity Ganon is active. When he has recovered his lost strength and regains the Master Sword, Fi chimes in happiness in having reunited with her master once more.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Fi was created by the Goddess Hylia as a measure of defense against the Demon King Demise and his right-hand man/weapon of choice, the Demon Lord Ghirahim. In sharp contrast to how Demise's lieutenant behaved, Hylia made sure to remove all human emotions from Fi, making her purely a logical and passive thinker who was designed to help those around her above all else.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword[]
“ | Rise, Link... The time has come for you to awaken... You are fated to have a hand in a great destiny, and it will soon find you... The time has come for you to awaken... Link... | „ |
~ Fi calling upon Link |
When the day drew near that Link and Zelda were to embark on their journey to destroy the evil Demise, Fi began appearing in Link's dreams to warn him of what is to come, and he is called to fulfil his destiny. After Zelda was dragged to the Surface below by a black tornado (later revealed to have been summoned by Ghirahim), Fi briefly reappeared once more time in Link's nightmare that it was time for him to begin his divine mission. After Link wakes up, Fi calls to him and guides him to the back of the Goddess Statue and goes inside where he sees a small Goddess Sword. She introduces herself and goes further to explain his fate as the chosen hero to defeat an ancient evil and rescue Zelda, who is later revealed to be the reincarnate of Hylia. She encourages him to draw the Goddess Sword to begin his mission, and once he does so she is able to recognize him as her master and began to refer to him as such from that point forward as he begins his journey below the clouds.
After the Goddess Sword is fused with a Sacred Flame, it evolves each time into the Goddess Longsword that can deal more damage and hit foes from a slightly further range, the Goddess White Sword that allows a wider range of subjects for Link to dowse, and the Master Sword that deals more damage. When Zelda powers the Master Sword, it becomes the True Master Sword where the time to charge the Skyward Strike is reduced before going into a thousand-year crystalized stasis to maintain the seal on Demise until Link found the Triforce to wish for Demise's destruction.
After Demise is destroyed and absorbed by the Master Sword in the final battle, Fi requests that Link place the Master Sword into the pedestal to end the Goddess's mission and her relationship with Link as she now has to enter into an eternal sleep now that her mission is over, but she took a quick moment to tell Link good-bye and that she was actually able to experience happiness for the first time and thanked him for it and hoped that she will meet him again in another life as her consciousness became dormant in the Master Sword.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild[]
“ | Tell me the truth… How proficient are you right now wielding that sword on your back? Legend says that an ancient voice resonates inside it. Can you hear it yet… hero? | „ |
~ Zelda mockingly asking Link if he is worthy enough to hear Fi. |
While Fi herself doesn't physically appear, she was referenced a few times in the game's cutscenes.
In one of Link's Recovered Memories, Princess Zelda talks about the Master Sword having an ethereal voice within it and asks Link if he has heard it yet.
During the second Great Calamity, Link fell in battle while trying to protect Princess Zelda, which caused Zelda's sealing powers to finally awaken. Despite this, the princess was unsure of how to proceed until she heard a voice coming from the Master Sword instructing her on what she had to do next, leading Zelda to realize that Link can still be saved and orders the Sheikah soldiers to take Link to the Shrine of Resurrection, after which she takes the Master Sword to Korok Forest to be watched over until Link returned. It is presumed that the voice within the legendary sword belongs to Fi.
In the Master Sword memory, Princess Zelda noted that the voice in the sword told her that her duty isn't finished yet, which had her charge Impa, Purah, and Robbie to relay her message to Link once he comes out of the shrine, to return the Master Sword to have the Great Deku Tree watch over it, and seal both Ganon and herself for a hundred years until Link returned to set things right.
During the secret ending, Zelda states that she could not hear the voice inside the sword anymore, possibly due to her power having dwindled over time keeping Calamity Ganon confined.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity[]
During the Guardian of Remembrance DLC's secret ending, one of the scenes has Link and Zelda hanging out at Hyrule Castle when the voice within the Master Sword calls out the moment Link turns away from Zelda, once again presumed to be coming from Fi, which pleasantly surprises the witnessing princess while Link doesn't take notice of it.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom[]
“ | The Master Sword… Your sword… She is the key to defeating the Demon King. | „ |
~ Zelda to Link. |
At the beginning of the game, the Demon King Ganondorf shatters the Master Sword, rendering Link and Zelda helpless. Months later, Link wakes up from a coma and meets the ghost of the first King of Hyrule, Rauru, who leads him to the decayed remains of the Master Sword. After Link learns the ability of Recall, Fi awakens and tells him to place the sword on an altar with a glowing orb. After doing so, Link uses Recall to send the Master Sword back in time to the aftermath of the Imprisoning War.
Zelda discovers the remains of the Master Sword, at which point the unseen Fi awakens and informs her that Link is still alive, and that she sent the Master Sword back in time to Hyrule's founding in order to repair herself over the course of several millennia. Seeking to speed up the process and keep the sword safe, Zelda swallows a Zonai Secret Stone and becomes the Light Dragon, with the Master Sword buried in her forehead.
For over 10,000 years, Fi uses the Light Dragon's sacred power to repair herself. When Link finally draws the repaired Master Sword, Fi reconnects with her master and powers up to help him destroy Ganondorf once and for all.
