Fiamma Corona is the main protagonist of the 1999 psychological horror novel Cracks and its 2009 film adaptation of the same name. She is an asthmatic Spanish aristocrat, the newest student at St Mathilda's boarding school and the unwitting subject of Miss Gribben's affection.
She was portrayed by Maria Valverde.
History[]
Fiamma first appeared when she was dropped of at St Mathildas, and bidded goodbye to presumably her mother. Almost instantly she was caught into conflict with Di Radfield the school's queen bee and leader of the diving team who humiliated her in front of her new classmates. Fiamma didn't seem particularly bothered however. The following day, Fiamma attended her first diving meeting and impressed her instructor Miss G who became instantly infatuated with her, much to the jealously of Di.
Following this Di continued to try and making Fiamma's life a living hell and convinced the diving team to join in on attempts at bullying and tormenting her, this didn't seem to phase Fiamma much however and she found a kindred spirit in Fuzzy the laughing stock of the group as well as some of the younger students. During a walk Di and some of the other girls mocked and imitated Fiamma's wheezing and shortness of breath and it was here that they discovered of her asthma and need for an inhaler. After being taunted by one of the girls named Poppy through a Treasure Island reference, once again however she was completely unphased by this and simply snarked back and walked back to the school.
It was around this time that Fiamma was growing evermore uncomfortable with Miss G's behaviour towards her, which usually amounted to stalking, favouritism, uncomfortable signs of affection and ridiculous times for diving team meetings to be held such as the middle of the night. This culminated in Di in a jealous rage forcing all of the other members of the diving team to give Fiamma a pillow case full of food, money and a map before shoving her out of the school and throwing stones at her, demanding she never return. A tearful Fiamma tried to call her family through a payphone however they refused to speak to her leaving her more heartbroken and isolated than before.
Thankfully however the police found Fiamma and returned her to the school, shortly thereafter she had an epiphany after a distressed Di ranted tearfully to her, confessing that Miss G unfairly punished the whole diving team every time Fiamma berated her, making her realise that she shouldn't actively go after Miss G, as it made everyone's lives harder. This led Fiamma into becoming closer with the rest of the team, Di included after she allowed her to keep her perfume, and one night they decided to plan a midnight feast which Miss G gave permission for.
Unfortunately Fiamma got drunk to the point of passing out leading to Miss G taking advantage of the situation and taking her to her bedroom where she raped her, unbeknownst to the two of them however Di saw the event but was left in too much shock to fully process what had truly happened. The following morning a dishevelled and traumatised Fiamma made her way through the school while Gribben followed on desperately much to her terror. finally Fiamma snapped at Miss G, telling her that she wanted to expose her for what she really was to the diving team and the school as a whole.
Fiamma moved to a small pond where she sat alone and completely broken before being confronted with a furious Di who began berating her (after being manipulated by Miss G) and tried to insist to the entire team that she was too blame for the incident. Now angry more than anything Fiamma slapped Di and ran away from the team, unfortunately however she was caught fairly quickly thanks to her asthma slowing her down and she was beaten to a pulp by the entire crew, triggering an attack. After realising what was happening Di panicked and told the rest of the team to go and get help while she looked for Fiamma's inhaler, after finding it however Miss G appeared before them and told Di to go back to the school.
Broken, afraid and dying Fiamma begged Miss G to give her back her inhaler but she refused instead telling Fiamma that she was too good for the world before allowing her to slowly die as her airways completely closed up.
Following her death Di in guilt and shame finally came to terms with who Miss G truly was and told the diving team what she saw, leading to all of them including Di abandoning her and quitting the team. Di also told the school's headmisstress, however she only fired Miss G and closed the matter from then on.
Di took Fiamma's map and wrote a letter to the team telling them she left the school to travel and promised to visit them again, deciding to read the books she bought as well and kept the perfume Fiamma gifted her with as a momento, meaning that she would in some respects live on.
Personality[]
Fiamma was a polite, well adjusted, intelligent and reserved girl with a very relaxed and calm personality, in spite of this however she was deeply hurt and full of pain by several things including the knowledge that her family don't care about her and were perfectly happy to abandon her at a boarding school. On top of this she was something of a loner, preferring her own company to that of others and hiding away from many of her peers.
Fiamma was incredibly disturbed and uncomfortable by Miss G and her actions and showed nothing but contempt and disdain for the woman and understandably so, in the end however she did feel guilty for her taunting of Miss G's effects on the other students. She also eventually opened up to the aforementioned students and genuinely became friends with many of them.
Appearance[]
Fiamma was fair skinned and had long dark brown hair and matching eyebrows. She had a fairly skinny and petite build and was usually seen wearing either the St Mathilda's uniform or her own clothes; an orange and yellow corduroy longcoat with a matching skirt and beret or when she was diving a white robe and matching bathing suit.
She always had her inhaler tied on a necklace around her neck as well.
