É você, Cascão! Não acredito! Até no meu aniversário, vocês nunca param de fazer planos!
(It's you, Smudge! I don't believe it! Even on my birthday, you guys never stop making plans!)
~ Monica briefly loses her temper when she finds that Cascão (Smudge) impersonated a doll so Cebolinha (Jimmy Five) could get his hands on her bunny in the episode "Venha à minha festinha" (Must Bring Doll).

Mônica de Sousa (known as Monica in english) is the titular main protagonist of the Monica's Gang franchise of comics and cartoons Monica's Gang, making her debut in 1963 as a support character for Jimmy Five's comic strip, Cebolinha.

She's a Brazilian 7-year-old girl and resident of the ficticious Limoeiro Neighborhood who's known for her immense strenght and short temper. Due to her aggressiveness, Monica is feared by most of the boys of her neighbourhood who often make fun of her appearance, to which she retaliates by beating them with her plush bunny, Samson. She's most notably the arch-rival (and secret love interest) of Jimmy Five, who frequently mocks her and makes plans to usurp her title of "owner of the street".

She is voiced by Maria Amélia (1976–1982), Marli Bortoletto (1983–present), and Priscilla Concepción and Agatha Paulita (Monica Adventures) and is portrayed by Giulia Benite, in the live action film Monica and Friends: Bonds (2019).

Personality and Abilities[]

Don't be fooled by her young age or how small she is! Monica seems helpless and innocent to the sight of an adult, but she actually hides a great strength and a very enviable bravery for her age and size. Always with her stuffed bunny named Sansão, and she is often the target of bullying by the boys of the street she lives. These bad boys torment her, but Monica can defeat them thanks to her super strength, allowing her to beat them as a way of revenge for abusing her like a scapegoat.

Because of her superhuman strength, Monica also becomes coveted by many powerful and dangerous villains who try to cause chaos and disorder, but she always beat them as a good heroine. Her biggest rival is named Jimmy Five (who is occasionally her friend and ally) and her best friend is Maggy.

Mônica is also extremely resistant, as seen when she was shrunken and got accidentally trampled by Cebolinha in the episode "Poeirinha Mágica" (Little Magic Dust), who didn't even notice her because she was so small.

Originally Monica was introduced in 1963 as the sidekick of Jimmy Five, but over the years, she has taken his place as the main protagonist. Since then, she has become a very popular character in the media appearing in cartoons, video games, toys, she earned her own comic book series after 1970.

Appearance[]

Mônica wears a red dress with short sleeves. Her feet are slipper-like, having no toe on their end. She has short, black hair. She carries a stuffed blue bunny named Samson around with her. She has no pants, so her white underwear is visible.

History[]

Monica is a Brazilian girl who lives in the Limoeiro neighborhood along with her parents Mr. Sousa and Miss Luísa. When she was still a baby, she gained a yellow toy bunny from her mother, named Hercules, that was, unknowingly, an ancient alien warrior that was transformed in a plush rabbit. Because of her great teeth, that were also in the rabbit race Hercules comes from, she received all of the strength of the warrior. Her mother wanted it to be a secret, and even created a secret hideout to guard important things like Hercules, that must not be find out. Monica grows up in an apparently normal way and becomes a normal naive child that has a few friends, and who lives being tormented by bad boys of the neighborhood who bother her with the provocative nicknames (such as chubby, bucktoothed, and shorty) besides frequently stealing her stuffed bunny Samson to beat it up and tie his ears. But Monica always gives them a lesson, beating them up with Samson.

Angry Monica

Monica nervous about to make a "rabbit-hit" on some villain.

Because she is always using her super strength as a defense to anyone who abuses her, Monica was granted the title of "Leader of the Street" (by the boys, not by her), and by extension, becomes frequent target of plans to defeat her. Her main rival is her neighbor Jimmy Five, a boy obsessed with his wish to dominate the street and that is the boss of all the bad boys who abuse Monica like a scapegoat. Jimmy Five always creates plans (according to him "infallible") to defeat Monica that normally involves his best friend named Smudge as his personal "henchman". These plans always involve disguises and acting to deceive Monica, or inventions, designs and even magical powers. However, in the end, Monica always defeats and beats up Jimmy Five and his friends. Despite that, when they're not in schemes to "defeat" Monica, she's in actual good terms with the boys in her neighbourhood, treating them as friends, especially Jimmy Five, as they secretly develop feelings for each other.

When she is not defeating the plans of Jimmy Five, Monica is always walking with her best friend named Maggy. Unlike the boys who always annoy her, Monica is a good friend with all the girls of the neighborhood. She always gets along with the girls, and they always play with dolls or doing parties. But she is also a victim of the contempt and abuse of a rich preppy girl named Carminha Frufru, who hates Monica and her good relationship with the girls, and because Monica always win the love of the boys despite everything, mainly Jimmy Five who is frequently jealous of Monica, because he also loves her despite their bitter rivalry.

Aside that, Monica and the kids in her district often goes on adventures, either them being simple children games, battles between the "rival district", the Pitanga Tree District, ruled by the Pitanga Tree Girls, a team of mean girls, composed by Sofia, Agnes, and, the leader of them all, Penha, or even more fantastical adventures, like battles between villains like Captain Fray, Viviane, the Witch and Dr. Spam, and sometimes more random adventures.

Trivia[]

  • Monica wasn't originally planned to appear in the comics. Her debut occurred since her creator was accused of being a misogynist because he had never written about female characters before her.
  • Monica is often considered and referred to as the most popular and recognizable character in Brazilian comics and cartoons, with her popularity as a comic book character in Brazil being comparable to the one of fellow Latin-American comic characters, like Mafalda in Argentina and Condorito in Chile.
  • Monica's design and name comes from one of the creator's daughters, Mônica Spada e Sousa, just like his other daughters led to the creation of Maggy and Mary Angela. Her rabbit, Samson, was also inspired on the toy rabbit that the real Mônica would carry, which was yellow, much like its early design.
  • Monica slightly resembles Little Lulu in her design.
