Hero Overview

Koyomi Araragi (阿良々木 暦, Araragi Koyomi) is the main protagonist of the Monogatari series and its most frequent narrator. He is a third year high school student who survived a vampire attack during spring break and barely regained his human life in the time that followed. Since then, he has been affiliated with Shinobu Oshino, the vampire that had attacked him, and continues to feed her his blood while becoming involved with more supernatural events. As such, he is still not entirely human and certain vampire traits remain, such as regeneration.

He is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya in the Japanese version of the anime and by Erik Scott Kimerer in the English audiobooks.

Appearance[]

In the adaptations that depict him, Koyomi is shown to be a young man with black hair, grey eyes, and a medium complexion. If not wearing his school uniform, he dresses casually, often clad in a hoodie and jeans, only his fashion sense is far from admirable. A feature unique to Koyomi is a very expressive ahoge, which often changes shape to mirror his emotions.

Personality[]

Koyomi is a laid-back individual. He was previously rather asocial in high school, claiming that having friends would "lower his integrity as a human," due to a negative experience during his first year. This ideology seems to have multiple implications, as his explanations seem to change slightly in different instances, only all support his preference for isolation and the idea that he would be stronger as a person if he was alone.

During the events of the series, he slowly opens up makes more friends. He is a poor academic student, close to failing every class except math. It is revealed through conversations that he's quite knowledgeable on anime.

Koyomi has a desire to help those around him and believes strongly in taking responsibility for personal matters that he could have helped despite not being any of his business. This desire causes him to behave recklessly or abuse his regeneration powers when faced with dangerous situations. Koyomi's desire to help is often portrayed as his own selfish desire and seen by those around him as being too soft towards other people.

Koyomi Vamp[]

On the day of the closing ceremony of his second year of high school and at the very start of spring break, the unsocial Koyomi met Tsubasa Hanekawa for the first time. Later that night, Koyomi ends up encountering a limbless vampire who demands him to give his own life so she can live. He panics and runs away, but changes his mind after hearing her cry for her life. He offers his blood to save the vampire, ready to die. When he awakes, he finds he never died, and that the vampire had turned into a 10 year old girl. After she saves him from the sun after discovering he had become a vampire himself, she reveals her name is Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. She explains that he can turn back into a human if he gets all of her missing limbs back from the vampire hunters that stole them from her. After Koyomi goes outside and encounters the vampire hunters for the first time, a strange man named Meme Oshino comes to save him. With Meme's help, Koyomi was able to battle each hunter with his vampire abilities and retrieve back Kiss-shot's limbs. Once Kiss-shot is restored back to her original form, Koyomi requests she transform him back into a human. However, he later finds Kiss-shot eating one of the vampire hunters he defeated. Shocked and outraged, Koyomi runs away and contemplates suicide for reviving a monster that eats people.

With Tsubasa's encouragement, Koyomi then battles Kiss-shot with the intent to kill her. The fight ends when Koyomi sucks on Kiss-shot's blood and weakens her back into a child-like form. Koyomi decides to keep Kiss-shot alive instead, with him occasionally feed her his blood. At the same time, Koyomi's relationship with Tsubasa heads in a positive direction, as they end up in the same class.

Hitagi Crab[]

He first encounters his future girlfriend Hitagi Senjougahara when she falls and he catches her, discovering that she is almost weightless. During brainstorming for a school festival, he then tells Tsubasa about what happened. However, Hitagi overheard the conversation and displayed herself to be aggressively secretive to him about her condition. She threatens him with a stapler at his inside cheek, and she pierces it anyways after she finished dealing with him. Later, he approaches her again and shows that his cheek healed unusually quick, surprising Hitagi. He insisted on helping her get back to normal.

He takes her by bike to Meme Oshino, who lives in an abandoned building named Eikou Cram School. Oshino welcomes them and explains how he's renamed the former vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade to Shinobu Oshino. Koyomi tells Meme about Hitagi's condition, and there Meme learns about a "weight-crab", the supernatural entity that caused Hitagi's loss of mass. Meme agrees to help, but also reminds her that only she can help herself overcome her problem.

Later that night, Koyomi takes Hitagi to another floor of the crammed building for the ritual, in order to bring her weight back. Meme begins the ritual, and the crab becomes visible to Hitagi and then proceeded to attack her. She realized in order to get rid of it, she must bear the weight of her mother's disappearance instead of ignoring it.

Trivia[]

  • Araragi is not depicted in the light novels' illustrations. Most character designs are based off of the light novel illustrations by VOFAN, but his character design was created by Akio Watanabe, who supervises the character designs for the anime series. Later appearances such as in manga adaptations base his appearance off this design.
  • The kanji for his given name (暦 koyomi) means calendar.
