Victory at the expense of the innocent is no victory at all.
~ T'Chaka
Our people's blood is spilled on foreign soil, not only because of the actions of criminals, but the indifference of those who pledged to stop them.
~ T'Chaka

T'Chaka is a supporting character in the 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain America: Civil War and the overarching protagonist of the 2018 film Black Panther.

He is the former king of Wakanda and the Black Panther before passing his mantle and kingdom to his son, T'Challa. He was killed by in a terrorist attack orchestrated by Helmut Zemo, which led T'Challa to become the new king. Despite his death, T'Chaka was able to support and guide his son through the Ancestral Plane.

He is portrayed by John Kani (who reprised his voice for different versions of the character in What If...?), and Atandwa Kani in flashback scenes.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

T'Chaka was born in Wakanda, and is the eldest son of Wakandan King Azzuri and an unnamed mother, and was the older brother to N'Jobu. T'Chaka later married Romanda and the two had children, a son named T'Challa and a daughter named Shuri. When Azzuri died, T'Chaka and N'Jobu received each of their father's two royal rings, and T'Chaka became the king of Wakanda and gained the title of the Black Panther. As T'Chaka became king, N'Jobu joined the War Dogs and served Wakanda by traveling to the United States to ensure their secrets were being maintained.

T'Chaka saw the rise of Wakanda with their advanced technology with vibranium, and later became friends with Zuri. T'Chaka later encountered Ulysses Klaue, who attempted to assassinate him after being hired to kill him. T'Chaka survived the assassination attempt on him while negotiating about Wakandan resources, and attempted to capture Klaue for years. Klaue also held a grudge against T'Chaka and his family, as one of his ancestors killed Klaue's great-grandfather, and T'Challa stated that his father regretted not capturing Ulysses.

Stopping N'Jobu[]

Following an attack on Wakanda by Klaue, T'Chaka learned that his brother had informed Klaue of Wakanda's weaknesses and allowed him to attack the country. Angered and shocked by N'Jobu's betrayal, T'Chaka decided to confront his brother by traveling to Oakland with the Dora Milaje and having Zuri keep an eye on him. T'Chaka confronted his brother about Klaue's attack and his betrayal, and told him to return to Wakanda and confess his crimes to the Tribal Council. Despite N'Jobu explaining his actions, T'Chaka refused to support him, and killed him when N'Jobu attempted to murder Zuri.

T'Chaka and Zuri decided to leave Oakland, abandoning N'Jobu's son, Erik Stevens to find his father's corpse. T'Chaka's actions resulted in Erik deciding to avenge his father by killing those responsible, and to gain control of Wakanda to sell weapons to poor countries.

Raising T'Challa[]

T'Chaka returned to Wakanda and felt guilt for his actions, but believed that his decision was the best for his people. T'Chaka continued to raise his children with his wife and friends, and passed his Black Panther mantle to his son in 2009. Weeks later, T'Chaka tasked T'Challa and Okoye with stopping Douglas Scott and Zanda, who were taking hostages.

Captain America: Civil War[]

T'Chaka supported the Sokovia Accords, since Wakandan subjects were some of the many innocents killed by Crossbones during his attack in Lagos, Nigeria. During the meeting, T'Chaka gave a speech about Ultron and used stolen Vibranium to destroy Sokoiva, and how the Avengers' inaction caused Crossbones to take countless lives. T'Chaka took note of these instances, and vowed that Wakanda would fight for the world and would no longer remain hidden. During his speech, he was killed alongside others by a bomb that was orchestrated by Helmut Zemo.

T'Challa mourned his father, and decided to get revenge by hunting down Winter Soldier, but later learned that Zemo had framed him. Before being arrested by T'Challa, Zemo admitted that T'Chaka was not meant to die in the bombing, and showed respect of the late king. Afterward, T'Challa took up the title as the new king of Wakanda, and informed his family of T'Chaka's death.

Black Panther[]

Despite his death, T'Challa was able to visit his father in the Ancestral Plane after getting the Heart-Shaped Herb. After T'Challa learned of his cousin's past, T'Challa visited his father and his ancestors in the Ancestral Plane. T'Challa told his father and his ancestors that they were wrong to turn their backs on the rest of the world, and for abandoning Killmonger after killing N'Jobu. After stopping Killmonger, T'Challa revealed Wakanda's secrets at the United Nations, and decided to help the rest of the world with their technology.

Trivia[]

  • He is similar to Odin from the same series:
    • Both were benevolent rulers.
    • Both groomed their sons to become kings.
    • Both indirectly created the main antagonist of a film or caused the reason for their villainous actions (Odin stealing Loki and hiding his origins, and T'Chaka leaving Killmonger to find his dead father).
  • T'Chaka was a fan of the Back of the Future franchise.
  • Unlike his comic book counterpart, T'Chaka isn't successfully killed by Ulysses Klaue.
