Captain Atom (real name Nathaniel Christopher "Nate" Adam), is a fictional superhero from Charlton comics, and later DC comics.
A military soldier, Adam received his powers from the Quantum Field after a government project, and became a superhero and member of the Justice League. The character of Captain Atom was the inspiration for the character Doctor Manhattan who was featured in the miniseries (and later live-action film adaptation) Watchmen.
Allen Adam was created by Joe Gill and Steve Dikto, as Nathaniel Adam was created by Cary Bates and Pat Broderick, and first appeared in Captain Atom Vol. 2 # 1 in March of 1987.

Background[]
Nathaniel Adam used to be a special operations officer who had served many tours of duty in Vietnam. One day, he made contact with the quantum field, granting the ability to produce many forms of energy. During his newfound form, the military assigned Adam to infiltrate the superhero community to spy on them and keep them in check. However, he grew to make his life goal to become a superhero after the conflict.

Military Service[]
Nathaniel Christopher "Nate" Adam joined the United States Air Force, becoming an officer during the Vietnam War era. During his service, he was framed for a crime he didn't commit, and was sentenced to death under the watch of Colonel Wade Eiling.
Becoming Captain Atom[]
To avoid execution, Adam was invited to participate in a military experiment and was promised a presidential pardon should he survive. Adam participated in the experiment, where he was in a crashed alien ship as nuclear bomb was landed on it. Nate managed to survive the experiment, but the alien metal melded with his body, while the excess energy threw him forward in time nearly twenty years.
Nate regained coherence in 1986, and found himself back in the hands of Eiling, now a general and the second husband of Adam's now deceased wife. Since it was assumed that Adam died during the experiment, the government blackmailed Adam to become a superhero codenamed "Captain Atom". The government gave him a false origin for use in public, and assigned him the identity of Air Force intelligent operative "Cameron Scott". During this time, Nate met the superpowered terrorist Plastique, who became a big part of his life.
Captain Atom served under Eiling until he succeeded in clearing his name, and rebelled against the general when resigning from the Air Force. Afterward, Captain Atom joined the Justice League at the request of the government, and eventually served as the leader of Justice League Europe. During his heroic career, Captain Atom developed a friendly rivalry with Firestorm, dated Catherine Cobert, battled Major Force, learned basic heroics from Batman, and commanded the metahuman forces when the Alliance invaded.
