Gray Fullbuster is one of the tritagonists of the Fairy Tail anime/manga series. He is an Ice-Make Mage, a member of the Fairy Tail Guild and a member of Team Natsu. Due to his training history, he is most comfortable in little clothing and often forgets to wear clothes or quickly takes it off, thus often being accused of being an exhibitionist. He and Natsu Dragneel have a friendly rivalry, and can often be seen fighting one another, though this becomes less frequent as the series goes on.
He is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura and Eri Kitamura as a child in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Newton Pittman and Ryan Reynolds as a child in the English version.
Appearance[]
Gray is a tall man who is toned and muscular. He has spiky black-colored hair with dark blue eyes. He recieves a scar on the top of his forehead above his left eye after the the mission on Galuna Island, he also recieves another scar that is cross-shaped on his lower abdomen due to using Seven Slice Dance (Ice Blade) on Tenrou Island. His Fairy Tail guild-mark is dark blue and is located below his collarbone on his pectoral muscle.
As a striper, Gray doesn't always wears clothes, but when he is wearing clothes, he doesn't consistently wear the kind of clothes, though he seems to wear a white coat occasionally. Gray's noticeable pieces of clothing is a necklace, which resembles a sword with a stone on it, a metal bracelet and a chain that is attached to belt loops on the right side of his pants.
Personality[]
During his childhood, Gray seemed to be very reckless and obstinate. He didn't like it when new members of the guild didn't introduce themselves to "Gray the Great", when Erza Scarlet was new to the guild, he would constantly fight Erza and get defeated everytime. Over time, he attained a more cautious attitude towards life, and deals with problems more seriously.
Gray can be serious when the time calls for it, but he is usually seen to be a laid-back guy. Though he may trash talk the guild every now and then, Gray is very loyal toward his guild and seems to be very concerned about his comrades. But him and Natsu have a friendly rivalry, while constantly seen fighting one another verbally or even physically, they both care and can be quite concerned about one another.
One things that hasn't changed about Gray is his tendency to take off his clothes (even his underwear sometimes) during inappropriate moments, sometimes without even realizing he did it.
History[]
Gray lived with his father Silver and mother Mika in a village up in the North, but one day, a demon from the book of Zeref called Deliora destroyed the village causing both of Gray's parents to die. Lyon, along with one of the Ten Wizard Saints according to Jellal, she was a powerful ice mage named Ur, and came to investigate Deliora's destruction. During the process, they both found Gray still alive among the ruins. Ur decided to take Gray as her second student and taught him and Lyon Ice-Make magic, which develops his habit of taking off his clothes occasionally. Gray accepts the training in order to avenge his deceased parents by killing Deliora using Ur's methods.
After Gray found out Deliora's location, he decided to challenge Deliora all by himself, as well as ignoring Ur and Lyon's warnings. Trying to fight Deliora, he collapsed during the battle and woke up to see Ur battling it. Ur told him and Lyon to run for their safety. She explains that the Ice Shell is the only way to beat Deliora which can sacrifice her life. She then uses the Ice Shell which caused her body to be destroyed. Before she turned into ice, she made a promise to Gray to tell Lyon that she died and told him to step into the future, so she can seal the darkness inside him away. The next day, Lyon found out that Deliora encased in ice and about Ur's sacrifice. He blames Gray for her death which made them go their own separate ways.
Suddenly, Gray follows Ur's advice to find strong wizards in the west, he came across the Fairy Tail guild and asked Master Makarov ways to reverse the effects of the Iced Shell. Makarov tells him that only one method could possibly reverse it would kill Ur in the process since she now lives on as the ice encasing Deliora.
Magic and Abilities[]
Ice-Make[]
This is the first magic that Gray has learned from his former teacher Ur. This form of magic allows the user to create ice at his will and can even shape it into things or objects. Ice-Make is known as an extremely versatile form of Magic, which can be useful both in battle and defense. Due to specializing in it and practice for years, Gray possesses exterme mastery over it, being capable of creating countless amounts of objects for a multitude of uses. As an Ice-Make mage, Gray can handle the cold and can take damage from ice and snow-based attacks without getting injured in the aftermath. Gray can also freeze and reshaped Juvia, who is a Water Mage while in her liquid from into various Ice-Make creations.
Ice Devil Slayer Magic[]
Gray's father Silver gave to him. This form of magic allows him to manipulate and control the element of ice. Just like any other form of slayer magic, Gray is able to consume external sources of ice in order to increase his strength and enhance his power while at the same time granting immunity to it. Since this is Devil Slayer Magic, it's extremely powerful and effective towards Demons, which can even have to ability to resist the effects of curses. But learning this magic too quickly and making use of its properties in rapid succession that effects Gray in a way, causing the half of his body afflicted with black markings. Nevertheless, Gray himself said that with the help of Porlyusia, was able to gain control over it. This form of magic helps Gray boost his Ice-Make Magic, making him freeze everything within a large radius with a mere flick of the wrist.
Trivia[]
- Gray has been seen smoking in the manga a couple of times, but this event is never shown in the anime.
- Gray was orginally planned to be an Ice Dragon Slayer, but it was ultimately rejected. Mashima did toy around with this idea again around the Tenrou Island arc before coming up with the idea for him to be an Ice Devil Slayer before writing the Grand Magic Games.
- Grays boxers are more long in the anime and are always seen to be black, unlike the manga.
- Gray has not lost to the same opponent twice.
