Mata Nui is the overarching protagonist of the BIONICLE franchise. He is a powerful mechanical being known as "the Great Spirit" who was created by the Great Beings and was sent to the Matoran Universe to manage the population of the Matoran. He was also Makuta Teridax's brother and ally, though they became enemies when Teridax plotted to overthrow the Great Spirit due to his jealousy towards Mata Nui.
He was also both a founder and leader of the Order of Mata Nui, the organization which named after him, though Helryx took over as the new leader following his defeat in the hands of Teridax. However as his massive mechanical body that contained the Matoran Universe fell comatose due to Teridax's manipulations, his spirit survived and possessed the core of the Great Spirit robot.
Later, it was revealed that Mata Nui was on the verge of death due to Teridax's actions, though he was revived when Matoro sacrificed himself to restore his life.
Later following his banishment into Spherus Magna by Teridax, Mata Nui became the main protagonist in the Bara Magna story arc. He allied himself with the Glatorian and the Agori to defeat the Rock Tribe and fulfilled his role of reforming Spherus Magna and saving the Matoran Universe denizens from Teridax's reign.
He was voiced by Michael Dorn in BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn, who also voiced Worf in the Star Trek franchise.

Over 100,000 years ago, Mata Nui was created by the Great Beings in the planet of Spherus Magna. His massive robotic body was named "the Great Spirit" and everything in the Matoran Universe was contained inside it to operate and maintain his life. After he was awakened, he was given several tasks by the Great Beings.
Amongst those tasks were to explore and observe other universes, so that he could gather information, before fulfilling his primary objective: to heal the planet of Spherus Magna. Mata Nui spent millenia conducting his duties, with the Matoran inside his body revering him as a great guardian. However, Mata Nui was enthralled by the worlds he visited and his interest eventually led to the neglect of his own universe that was his body.

Mata Nui was a being of pure good. He was very wise, understanding, brave, dutiful, and noble as he was willing to help his allies even he was going to risk his life. However despite his duties, he only focused on his mission of collecting knowledge and restoring Spherus Magna, never paying much attention to what happened in the universe inside him. This eventually led to his downfall due to Teridax's manipulations, as he saw none of the Matoran Universe inhabitants as a friend or ally.
Mata Nui learned his lesson after being banished from his universe. On Bara Magna, he learned not only to pay attention to his surroundings but also of the value of trusting and befriending others. He began to care about others and not just himself. He stopped thinking of the Toa and Matoran as workers and began to think of them as allies and friends, and showed an urgent need to return to the Matoran Universe to save it from Teridax's reign as soon as possible.
Powers & Abilities[]
While controlling the Great Spirit Robot, Mata Nui stood forty million feet tall. He possessed the ability to fly, fire blasts of energy from its palms, manipulate gravity, and other techologically advaned abilities while being able to control anything happening inside his mechanical form, especially when it came to the Matoran Universe inside him. After being cast out of the Matoran Universe, Mata Nui wore the Kanohi Ignika. When he landed on Bara Magna, the Ignika created a seven-foot tall body for him and he learned to use a sword.

- The Turaga of Mata Nui used a special rock carving to represent Mata Nui when they told stories to the Matoran.
- During his slumber, Mata Nui was, on some level, aware of what was going on in the universe.
