Tangle the Lemur is a major character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. She is a teenage anthropomorphic ring-tailed lemur who first became acquainted with Sonic and his friends during the fallout after the war to retake Sonic's world from Dr. Eggman. When Tangle sprang into action to defend her hometown from Eggman's badniks, she encountered Sonic when he stopped by to help, and they have been friends ever since.

Tangle was the first original IDW Sonic character to be shown to the public, and quickly became hugely popular upon her reveal in promotional material. She continues to enjoy strong positive reception from Sonic fans, even getting her own mini-series alongside fellow heroine Whisper the Wolf.

Appearance

Tangle is an anthropomorphic ring-tailed lemur with primarily light gray fur and purple eyes. She possesses a small black nose and a long bushy tail with gray stripes. She also has gray fur around her muzzle and between her eyes, and gray fur around the sides of her eyes and on her eyelids and round ears. She also has extra fur on top of her head and chest, and small cheek tufts.

Tangle wears a short-sleeved black bodysuit with orange stripes down the sides, a yellow sleeveless top, and detailed yellow hi-tops with white laces and soles, black details, and orange cuffs. She also wears yellow sports tape around her forearms and fingerless black gloves made of black sports tape with orange backings.

Personality

Tangle is an excitable, energetic and happy-go-lucky lemur who loves adventure. She likes to be part of the action whenever trouble is afoot and will try to help her friends and those in need however she can. Tangle is known to be reckless and sometimes has the tendency to act first regardless of consequence. Because of this, she has occasionally shown some insecurities about her performance during missions. However, she usually keeps a positive outlook and is quite skilled and resourceful, particularly with her prehensile tail. Tangle has also shown to be claustrophobic and gets stressed when in dark, confined spaces.

Biography

Tangle the Lemur is a resident of Spiral Hill Village where she first met Sonic the Hedgehog and Blaze the Cat as they defended her hometown from invading Badniks. Amazed by their skills, Tangle assisted them in combat by using her stretchy prehensile tail to ensnare their robot attackers and help the duo reach a Super Badnik battleship to destroy it. Since then, Tangle has supported Sonic and his allies on various different missions. She joined them on an assault against Neo Metal Sonic on Angel Island and befriended Whisper the Wolf after the battle. Tangle later showed Whisper around her village, introducing the wolf to her childhood friend Jewel the Beetle and worked together to stop the Babylon Rogues stealing displays from the local mineral museum.

She soon got involved in a mission to help Whisper hunt down a shapeshifting mercenary named Mimic after she unknowingly allowed him to evade capture. Although eager to assist her friend, Tangle felt worried that she would let Mimic escape again and tried to stay extra vigilant as they were led to a abandoned Eggman bunker. The two of them both knew they were heading into a trap, so Tangle decided to split up in a attempt to outpace Mimic. But as she searched for the villain, Tangle suddenly heard Jewel calling out for help and rejoined Whisper to rescue her. Tangle is told to check a partially open safe when she realised too late that Mimic had fooled her again by taking the form of Whisper and is locked inside. The situation causes her to become claustrophobic but she stops herself from panicking to conserve oxygen remaining within the safe until Whisper arrives to save her. However, when Mimic sets off explosives to destroy the bunker, she renters the safe with Whisper to avoid being blown up.

After the blast, Whisper told Tangle to go back home, which caused the lemur to start blaming herself for the botched mission. But Whisper replied that it was not her fault and that she could not handle losing another friend. Tangle convinced Whisper to talk about what was troubling her and learnt about her past with the Diamond Cutters, a team which opposed the Eggman Empire until they were betrayed by Mimic and eliminated by Shadow Androids. Tangle was the first friend she allowed herself to have since then and was afraid of losing her as well. However, Tangle remained by her side as friends stick together, and began working on plan to defeat Mimic.

They leave a message for him to meet them at the Diamond Cutters' former Clove Sea base, where Tangle would wait for Mimic to sneak through the base's back entrance. Once he arrived, Tangle showed him holograms of his old teammates and asked him if it was worth betraying them to Dr. Eggman. The two of them fought with Mimic managing to get the upper hand until Whisper joined the fight, which allowed Tangle to wrap him up in her tail and slam him to the ground. Whisper was about to finish him off with her Wispon but Tangle convinces her it would be worse for Mimic to live with his defeat. They send him to Tails' workshop where he will be held until the authorities transfer him to Everhold Prison. Meanwhile, Whisper and Tangle decide to part for the time being, but would soon reunite to fight against the growing Metal Virus epidemic.

The virus would eventually spread to Spiral Hill Village where Tangle became infected with it while helping the Restoration evacuate people to safety. However, she expressed confidence that Sonic and the other heroes would find a way to cure everyone and choose to remain in the village to keep the Zombots at bay until she soon became one of them herself. She later reappeared as a Zombot during Zavok's attack on Angel Island where she managed to corner Whisper before being restored to normal alongside everyone else infected when the Metal Virus was removed from their bodies, thus finally ending the epidemic.

Tangle joined in on the post-Metal Virus festivities being held at Spiral Hill Village when Dr. Eggman reappeared to attack them using Giga Omega, but he was defeated by Sonic and E-123 Omega after the former returned from Blaze's Dimension.

• She was first teased as an obscured silhouette in an artwork on Facebook that featured her and Sonic. This image was first revealed five days prior to the release of the first four issues' solicitations for the Sonic the Hedgehog comics. The image was updated regularly to show more of the silhouette, up until her unveiling on 24 January 2018.
• She is the first identified character exclusive to the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series that was revealed to the public.
• She is the third character to use profanity in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, with Silver being the first and Rough the second. In Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper #2, she said "Oh, crap..." after the Eggman Empire bunker was destroyed by Mimic's bombs.
• Along with Whisper, Tangle is the first comic-exclusive character to appear in Sonic games, the games in question being Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.
  • According to Ian Flynn, this is because Sega owns the characters from the IDW comic series, thus making it possible to use them in games.
• Kazuyuki Hoshino has stated that he loves both Tangle and Whisper and that he found it fun to team up with the IDW team to help create them.
