Jetfire is a flying Autobot, Optimus Prime's right hand, Autobots' deputy and tritagonist in Transformers Armada, Energon and Cybertron. He can combine with Optimus in Transformers: Armada, and he can combine with Ironhide and Cliffjumper in Transformers: Energon.

Jetfire is voiced by Scott McNeill in Armada and Energon, and Brian Drummond in Cybertron. In the Japanese dub, Jetfire is voiced by Susumu Chiba in Armada/Micron Legend, Nobuyuki Hiyama in Energon/Super Link, and Hideo Ishikawa in Cybertron/Galaxy Force.

History[]

Armada[]

Before Optimus Prime and his squad left for Earth in response to the Mini-Con signal, he left Jetfire in command of the remaining Autobot forces on Cybertron.

Much later in Chase, Optimus Prime requested Jetfire's assistance as the battle for the Mini-Cons reached a dangerous point with the discovery of the Star Saber sword and the Skyboom Shield. As Jetfire made his way to Earth, he was followed by the Megatron loyalist Tidal Wave, who had similarly been requested by the Decepticon strategist Thrust.

In Tactician, Thrust's arrival quickly improved Decepticon battle strategy, sending the Autobot forces on Earth into disarray. Optimus Prime would have been defeated if not for the timely arrival of Jetfire, who quickly defeated the surprised Decepticon air power and forced the rest into retreat.

In Linkup, Jetfire was quickly installed as second in command, but as everybody who had never served with him discovered, he was a very different compared to the reserved Optimus Prime, finding him brasher and reckless. As a result, in his first major battle with the Decepticons, Jetfire decided to take all of their air forces on by himself, getting himself into serious trouble. Fortunately, Optimus Prime had recovered enough from his injuries to launch a counter-attack and Powerlinked with Jetfire, resulting in the powerful Jet Optimus. Together, they overpowered the Decepticons in short order. Afterwards, Jetfire promised that he would be more cautious in the future.

During downtime, in Detection, Jetfire had an arm wresting contest with Smokescreen, beating him several times, and reviewed footage of the Autobots' and Decepticons' battles on Earth. Jetfire noticed that Sideways had sometimes acted against the Decepticons, despite having already defected to their side. He discussed this revelation with the children. They all came to the agreement that, despite the fact that it was unclear whether or not Sideways was a Decepticon, he couldn't be trusted.

The Requiem Blaster[]

Later, the Autobots and Decepticons squared off on a beachfront. In Awaking, the battle was over over a new Mini-Con storage panel. Optimus Prime and Jetfire combined into Jet Optimus to take the fight to the Decepticons. However, Jet Optimus' power was tested by the newly arrived Tidal Wave. The giant Decepticon's strength and firepower forced Jet Optimus on the backfoot, and in their shared gestalt mind, both Optimus and Jetfire were at a loss as what to do. In Desperate, though Jet Optimus fled up into the sky, he found himself surrounded by enemy units. Megatron pursued the Autobots by combining with Tidal Wave, and used the Star Saber to forcibly separate Jetfire from Optimus, sending the Autobot leader plummeting. Jetfire was left unable to go after Optimus as Megatron then bombarded him with laser blasts. The Autobots only won thanks to the Space Mini-Con Team, who combined into the Requiem Blaster, which wound up in Optimus's grasp.

Having retrieved the Requiem Blaster, the Autobots were left divided on whether to use it to end the war. Some, including Jetfire, were more willing to use it to storm the Decepticons, although the debate was put on hold when the Space Mini-Con Team had run away, along with the kids. Though most of the Autobots went out looking for them, both Scavenger and Jetfire remained behind on monitor duty, due to their vehicle modes being too conspicuous.

When the Autobots were informed by a mysterious source to meet the Decepticons in battle within a forest, Jetfire objected to them not bringing along the Requiem Blaster. However, they found themselves fighting only Starscream, armed with the Star Saber. Jetfire combined with Optimus to fight him. Their duel ended abruptly when Starscream realised he had been abandoned, as the rest of the Decepticons instead attacked the base to capture the Requiem Blaster. The Autobots warped back to base, Jet Optimus splitting back into his two component 'bots once there. They were too late to save Smokescreen, who nearly died trying to protect the Mini-Cons. Despite his sacrifice, Megatron took the Requiem Blaster and retreated.

Starscream's defection[]

While Smokescreen was repaired in Regeneration, Hot Shot and Side Swipe, eager for revenge, broke rank to take on Starscream and Tidal Wave. Jetfire and Optimus went after them, and combined into Jet Optimus to rescue their subordinates. They were no match for Tidal Wave, until Starscream willingly handed them the Star Saber. Tidal Wave warped away, and Starscream was taken to the Autobots' base, where he revealed he had defected from the Decepticons. Though Jetfire was hesitant to trust him, the Autobots ultimately decided to accept Starscream into their ranks. Smokescreen was rebuilt into a new body, and the Autobots used data provided by Starscream to warp gate to the Decepticon camp. During the battle, in Rescue, the captured Mini-Cons were found. Jetfire helped round-up the Mini-Cons, now free of Megatron's influence thanks to Perceptor, and queued them up so they could warp back to the Autobots' base.

When a new Mini-Con was detected on Mars, Jetfire and Starscream's flight abilities meant they were the only ones who could perform the mission. Jetfrre brought his Mini-Con partner Comettor and the Skyboom Shield, but disliked having to work with Starscream. Although Starscream set off ahead of him, Jetfire chose to remain on-task instead of tracking him down. When Jetfire eventually found him, Starscream was so wrapped up in self-pity that he refused to follow orders. Jetfire was forced to handcuff him and charge him with dereliction of duty. On returning to Earth, the pair discovered the Mini-Con on an asteroid. They were attacked by Tidal Wave, hindering their first pass to snatch up the newly awakened Firebot. Starscream was able to persuade Firebot into turning on the Tidal Wave, and then grabbed the Mini-Con and put him in Jetfire's storage compartment. When Megatron arrived, armed with the Requiem Blaster, he fired it at them, but the combination of the Blaster, Skyboom Shield and Starscream's Star Saber caused a massive flare of energy that covered Jetfire and Starscream's escape.

In Crack, Jetfire supervised the construction of a spaceship for the Autobots, playing the part of a drill sergeant, making sure all the others did their fair share of work. This led to him getting into an argument with Starscream, who insisted the Autobots should prioritize Megatron's destruction above all other matters. Starscream stormed off, and the rest of the Autobot continued with their labour.

The ship was in the final stages of construction when Billy and Fred reported that they had seen Starscream "chase off" Thrust after the Decepticon had asked him to steal the Skyboom Shield. As it turns out, the Mini-Cons Dirt Boss, Downshift, and Mirage, who made up the Skyboom Shield, were nowhere to be found just then. Accusations that Starscream had complied with Thrust's request were thrown around, but the conversation was cut short when the Decepticons attacked. Jetfire flew out to meet them, and after shooting down Cyclonus, he Powerlinxed with Optimus to take on Tidal Wave. Just as Smokescreen passed the Skyboom Shield to Jet Optimus (the Mini-Cons having been found during the battle), Starscream swooped down, grabbed it, and left with both the shield and the Star Saber in hand to rejoin the Decepticons.

Optimus's death[]

Jetfire was angry at Starscream's treachery in Threaten, but was still able to control his emotions, unlike many of the others. He had Side Swipe try and hack into the Decepticons' warp gate, but they had taken additional precautions over such incursions after the Autobots' previous attack. Jetfire nonetheless continued to urge Optimus to go on the offensive. After the Decepticons test-fired their newly built Hydra Cannon, Jetfire, Optimus, Side Swipe, and Hot Shot were left staring in awe over the might of the Decepticons' super-weapon.

In Crisis, Jetfire warped out into orbit to scout out the Decepticons' warship, but found himself unable to penetrate their electro-shield. After returning to base to meet with Optimus, the both of them warped back near the Decepticons' ship and combined. They then waited for the Hydra Cannon to drop its shield in preparation for its attack, and took advantage of this opening to begin their assault. The Decepticons emerged from the ship to ward Jet Optimus off, who split into his individual components to better deal with their numbers. Jetfire distracted the Decepticons while Optimus attempted to retrieve the Mini-Con weapons. However, Jetfire was overwhelmed by the number of enemies, and was pinned down, forced to watch the Hydra Cannon open fire in Earth. Optimus managed to use the Matrix to stop the beam, but was destroyed, to Jetfire's horror. While the Decepticons were distracted, Jetfire wrenched himself free of their grasp, and desperately tried to find any sign that Optimus was somehow still alive, but only found his Mini-Con Sparkplug and the Matrix of Leadership.

In Remorse, while the Autobots mourned their leader, Jetfire scoped out the Moon, trying to find anything left behind by the Decepticons, but was unable to find anything, as they had departed for Cybertron. When he returned to Autobot headquarters, Jetfire was confronted by the emotional Hot Shot, who insisted the two of them chase after the Decepticons for revenge. Jetfire knew his request was pointless without rebuilding their ship, but the agitated Hot Shot's outbursts continued. Scavenger decided to step in and beat sense into him with aggressive therapy. Though Alexis pleaded with Jetfire to step in, Jetfire assured her that Scavenger knew what he was doing. Hot Shot was eventually made to confront the reality of the Autobots' situation, and stopped fighting his teammates. Believing it would be what Optimus would have wanted, Jetfire passed on leadership of the Autobots to Hot Shot. With their morale renewed, the team redoubled their efforts to complete the Axalon.

After the Powerlinx Battles, Jetfire spend some time over the intervening decade on the planet Nebulous, where he picked up a Nebulon accent, which sounded Australian to human ears. Returning to Cybertron, Jetfire seemed more mature, being cautious, and following protocol.

The Unicron Singularity[]

Eventually in Fallen, Unicron's demise created a black hole that threatened Cybertron. Optimus sent Jetfire to Earth to find Earth altmodes in case they could not seal the Unicron Singularity. The planetary exodus was put underway when the elder Vector Prime introduced himself. This new arrival assured the Autobots that he had the means to nullify the black hole, by collecting the Cyber Planet Keys to use Primus's power to seal it. After the map was stolen by Megatron, Optimus's elite team, including Jetfire, then set off to Earth. En route, Vector Prime explained to the Autobots that the black hole would, if left unchecked, swallow up the entire universe. He then doubled back to retrieve his cosmic map from Megatron, with Optimus insisting that Hot Shot, Jetfire, and Overhaul accompany him. Jetfire's team came upon Megatron and Starscream inside an asteroid belt. While Jetfire and Vector Prime dealt with Starscream, Overhaul and Hot Shot tackled Megatron. the Decepticons proved to be too powerful and the Autobots were unable to prevent them from escaping. Jetfire then rendezvoused with Optimus on Earth, where he met their newest human allies: Coby, Bud, and Lori.

After Galvatron's defeat, the war was finally over. After Optimus proposed that they follow in the steps of their ancestors and start a new space bridge project, Jetfire was the only one unenthusiastic about it. He felt insecure of leading Cybertron in Optimus's absence, but the others rallied around him, and he accepted the role with gusto, going to be interviewed by Brad. When Optimus formally handed over command to Jetfire, Jetfire assured his old friend that he would always be the true commander.

Personality[]

Jetfire has a witty, cheerful personality that helps to bridge the distance between Prime as leader and his troops. Where Optimus was cautious and analytical, Jetfire was brash and headstrong to the point of recklessness, jumping into the unknown without considering the consequences. The friendly nature that keeps him popular amongst the Autobots hides a strong sense of intelligent judgment that has saved his team from numerous predicaments, and means that he will even speak up and tell Prime that he is wrong to his face. Over the years, this side of his personality would bring itself to the forefront, adhering much more to orders and protocol. Optimus would eventually judge him as worthy of leading Cybertron in his absence.

Jetfire is voiced by Scott McNeill in Armada and Energon, before being replaced by Brian Drummond in Cybertron. His voice in Cybertron included a noticeable Australian accent. The Hasbro website explained that in the gap between Energon and Cybertron, Jetfire had a holiday on the planet Nebulous, and picked up the accent from his time there. Ironically, Scott McNeill is australian.
While Jetfire did get a "Powerlinx" recolour, he never receives this upgrade in Armada.
Jetfire's upgraded form in Energon was treated as a separate character in the US toyline, called Overcast, Jetfire's brother. He makes an appearance in the prose story Force of Habit.
Jetfire's Cybertron design would be used on Dreadrock, a Transformer who made a small cameo in IDW's More than Meets the Eye comic books, and was mentioned as an Autobot in Fun Publication's Beast Wars: Uprising.
