King William is the overarching protagonist of The Swan Princess film series. He was the late king and the father of Princess Odette who was assassinated during a confrontation with the court warlock, Sir Rothbart.
He was voiced by American actor Dakin Matthews.
History[]
The Swan Princess[]
William is known as one of the greatest defenders of an unnamed European kingdom, possibly Medieval Wales in Great Britain. He is remembered as one of the late rulers who arranged with Queen Uberta to marry off their children Prince Derek and Princess Odette. After Odette's birth, William defeated the court warlock, Rothbart, banning him from the kingdom. He and Uberta tried to have Odette and Derek become friends, but it appears they seem to dislike each other. When they're young adults, Derek and Odette started to love each other; however, Derek offended Odette as he couldn't think anything else other than her beauty.
On his way back home with Odette, William was mortally injured during the battle between Rothbart, who attacked him and the guards in his monstrous form. William is later found by Derek upon hearing the ambush where Odette was captured.
After upon hearing the incident, Derek arrives and sees William laying on the ground, telling him that "it's not what it seems..." before dying. After his assassination, his kingdom now belongs to Odette, but that is what Rothbart still wanted to conquer.
William was later avenged by Derek once he shoots Rothbart in his beast form with an arrow to the chest.
Trivia[]
- He appears in a flashback from the 5th movie. This actually was a deleted scene from the first film.
- In The Swan Princess Christmas, Odette said that she and King William used to go to the woodcutters village every Christmas leaving food and presents at their doorsteps. This is the first time he's been used in a sequel.
- His last words before dying is similar to when Littlefoot's Mother dies in The Land Before Time.
