Prince Lír is a major character of the 1968 fantasy novel The Last Unicorn, and its 1982 animated film adaptation of the same name. He is a skilled hero of a dreary town known as Hagsgate who was adopted by the villainous King Haggard.

In the animated film, he was voiced by Jeff Bridges, who also voiced Big Z in Surf's Up and portrayed Kevin Flynn in Tron and Tron: Legacy, The Dude in The Big Lebowski, Rooster Cogburn in the 2010 version of True Grit, Roy Pulsipher in R.I.P.D., and The Giver in The Giver.

Bio[]

Prince Lír was adopted as an abandoned baby by King Haggard, who likely did so because he recognized his magical traits. Lír has these traits, because he is the descendant of a unicorn-turned-man, transformed by Schmendrick's master in the books, and the unicorn's human wife.

As such, Lír feels attracted to Amalthea so strongly because she, to, is "like him" - from a union of immortal and mortal qualities. Amalthea, in turn, comes to love Lír in return, perhaps for Lír's shared qualities and connection with her.

In an ironic twist of fate, Lír, the descendant of a unicorn, is also responsible for Haggard's downfall, and the release / saving of the unicorns from Haggard's grasp. Lír also fulfilled the prophecy of Haggard "inviting in his own doom" through his adoption of the boy.
