Maria is a major supporting character in Lupin III: The Hemingway Papers

Biography[]

Maria first appears, honking her horn, asking Lupin to move when she is driving her car, she permits Lupin to ride along as they are being followed by the troops of President Carlos. Their commander, Lopez drives up to her, asking if she seen someone with a stupid face (Lupin). She responds by saying he has a stupid face. They then break off the chase before Maria heads to her bar in a ruined town with no population besides Maria.

When Lupin turns on the Jukebox, Maria asks him to leave while she plays pool. After Jigen and Goemon survive their duel, Lupin talks with them about the Hemingway Papers at Maria's bar while she tends to her dishes.

Jigen also shows Lupin a photo of Crazy Mash before leaving. After Jigen and Goemon leave, Maria wakes Lupin up during closing hours and asks him to leave and throws him out when he tries to sleep in her bed, saying he can sleep in the barn.

When a plane boarded by Marces and Fujiko flies over the town, Maria is awakened by it's noise. She then starts preparing her sniper rifle and drives off in her truck. She begins to aim at Consano when two men catch her trying to assassinate him.

She beats them back with her rifle and runs before sliding down the mountain where the men nearly rape her. This attempted rape is stopped when Lupin incapicitates them with a horse.

Later that night, Maria was tending to the bar when Goemon and Jigen arrive with the latter talks about how unpredictable Mash was. After Goemon and Jigen were captured by Carlos's forces and Mash respectively, Lupin talks with Maria regarding this predicament when Consano's men raid the bar and expose her as a member of the Scorpions, prompting her to have Lupin trigger a trap so they can escape.

At the old Scorpion Base behind a waterfall, Maria explains that the Scorpions were a liberation front formed by the natives of Corcaca Island and led by her brother, but all members but Maria were killed seven years ago.

Their village was also destroyed in the process, leading to Maria to frown upon treasure hunters such as Lupin. However, she stops in time for Lupin to ask some questions.

Maria explains that ten years ago Carlos and Consano were partners and among hundreds of treasure hunters who came to the island. They later became leaders who began to take hold of the island, leading to the failed rebellion.

The surviving natives built a village at the north to live quietly. Maria also had them reassured that the Scorpions were not completely wiped out. Maria also believed Carlos and Consano's fallout was a result of the treasures they were seeking.

Maria then leaves, not desiring help from an outsider. Following the murder of Marces, Maria watches as the war between Carlos and Consano continues to rage. Just then she watches when Lupin and Fujiko return to the island via airplane.

At the ruins of Maria's bar, she explains that Carlos commenced an all out attack to recover the box from Consano. When Maria and Fujiko ask for eachother's identity, Fujiko leaves when Lupin realises they never met.

After Lupin survives the explosion of a stray rocket, Maria has him rest a while in her barn and tends to his wounds.

When Lupin finds out Carlos and Consano have sent Goemon and Jigen into a fight to the death, Maria asks Lupin where he is going. Lupin claims it is time for him to work with Maria responding "By yourself?" and offers him a helping hand, something Lupin didn't mind.

Following Lupin, Maria gives Fujiko a ride on horseback and join Lupin to save Goemon and Jigen with construction vehicles.

After Jigen is nursed back to health, he finds himself waking up at the old base for the Scorpions where he insists they solve the riddle of the Hemingway Papers before they continue their fight with Carlos and Consano.

Lupin reveals he took photos of the papers while he had them in his possession. They then proceed to examine what was written in the pictures and find that Ernst Miller Hemingway himself went on a trip with a friend to seek the treasure of Corcaca Island around the time he served the army during WWI.

On the island laid a massive treasure-made palace and Hemingway felt this would be his final trip in his life. The trip on the island involved a forest with no paved road and climbing down a sheer cliff underground. They then descended into a motherly worm, also known as a cave.

When they've reached the palace, the scenery was found to be breathtaking and appropriate for their last trip, but Hemingway's friend passed away on day 4, after the next three days there, Hemingway returned to Idaho to turn his experience into a novel.

Upon hearing this, Maria reveals that she heard about the palace when she was a child. She travels with the four where they spy on Carlos and Consano's armies as they march towards the location of the palace.

When Lupin guesses the leaders of both armies know of the palace, Maria explains it was told as the legend of the island where the palace is in the southern valley's underground.

Maria however also explained that the valley is also called the valley of death and people could die if they got close to it and says that everyone in both armies deserve to die, including Carlos and Consano.

When Lupin asked her to lead the way, Maria asks him if he is like the people heading towards their deaths with Lupin saying "probably". After Lupin everyone else rush towards the valley, Maria returns to her bar while it was raining, talking to herself about how it is the rain that turns the southern valley into the valley of death and it is not her business.

Following the deaths of Carlos, Consano, and Crazy Mash, Lupin explains to Maria that he never intended to avenge her brother, but reassures her that they'd be burning away in hell.

Maria thanks Lupin as a result of what happened to Carlos and Consano. Lupin asks her if she intends to continue running the rebuilt bar. Maria explains she does not know. Before Lupin leaves, Maria turns on her song and kisses him. Lupin then leaves, intending to return when the wind blows towards the island again with Maria waiting for him.
