Gandalf is the major protagonist of the animated film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth Legendarium. He serves as a supporting character in Gene Deitch's 1977 short film adaptation of The Hobbit, the main protagonist of the Rankin-Bass animated film duology, appearing as the central protagonist of 1977 version of The Hobbit and 1980 version of The Return of the King (also the name of Part III of the novel The Lord of the Rings) and the central protagonist of Ralph Bakshi's 1978 film The Lord of the Rings.

- In Gene Deitch's 1966 short film, he was voiced by the narrator Herb Lass, who also voiced all the other characters in the short such as Bilbo Baggins.

Biography[]
Gene Deitch[]
When the dragon Slag attacks destroyed the town of Dale, Golden Bells, General Torin Oakenshield and Princess Mika survive and ask Gandalf for advice. Gandalf tells them a prophecy stating Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit of the Shire, will kill Slag. They arrive at Bilbo's house, where Bilbo is told of Slag's destruction and the prophecy stating that Bilbo will kill Slag. Bilbo, initially reluctant declines to go through before Mika yells that she will go alone if she must.
Having fell into some affection with her and not wanting her to go alone due to being a child, Bilbo sets off on his quest. Gandalf himself stays in Hobbiton, knowing Groans (the short's version of Trolls) were ahead, watches in the distance as the three survivors and Bilbo get attracted to their roasted lamb. The survivors get put on the fire, leading to Bilbo cleverly mimicking their voices to turn them against each other till the sun arrives and kills them.
Later, Bilbo falls into a pit with Gallum, who he tricks into showing him the way out of the cave. Bilbo rejoins the three survivors of Dale, collectively trudging their way through Mirkwood. They arrive at the Lonely Mountain where Bilbo watches Slag sleeping. Bilbo steals the Arkenstone from Slag and together with the three survivors, fasten a giant bow and arrow with the Arkenstone as its heart. They use the bow to shoot the arrow into Slag's chest killing him. The City of Golden Bells gets rebuilt and Princess Mika and Bilbo rule it together before returning to Hobbiton. It is said that one day, Gandalf would once again knock on the round green door of Bilbo Baggins' Hobbit hole.

In his hobbit-hole, a hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins resides. The wizard Gandalf presents him to thirteen dwarves commanded by Thorin Oakenshield and says he is seeking for someone to go on an adventure with. They play music, have dinner, and invite themselves in. The charm in the song makes Bilbo want for adventure all of a sudden. In addition to describing how his dwarves were expelled from the Lonely Mountain by the dragon Smaug, who took their treasure, Thorin says that Bilbo is to be lucky number fourteen for them. Before the Hobbit has a chance to speak, Gandalf agrees to the task.
When the group comes across a camp of three trolls, everybody but Gandalf and Bilbo are captured. While Gandalf conjures up the sunlight to cast the trolls into stone, Bilbo hides. Bilbo finds some looted goods in the troll's cave that the dwarves claim as their own. Two swords are found, along with a dagger for Bilbo. Thorin is shown a key and a map of the Lonely Mountain by Gandalf, which were gifts from Thorin's father. A hidden route is marked on the map.
Ambushed by Goblins, Gandalf sets the forest they are in ablaze while escaping thanks to the help of Eagles. Gandalf previously heled the Great Eagle from a wound that was poisoned. Gandalf and the Company of Thorin Oakenshield stay with Beorn for a while and leads them to the borders of Mirkwood. Gandalf met the White Council to prevent Sauron's power from rising by destroying Dol Guldur, leading Sauron to go to Mordor. Gandalf discovers that Thorin and his company had been imprisoned by the Wood-elves and escaped said imprisonment.
After Smaug was killed by Bard the Bowman, Gandalf arrives in Erebor to find both Thorin's company and the Dwarves of the Iron Hills readying to assault the people of Laketown and the Wood-elves. Showing himself to Bard and Thranduil, he tells them he will try to make peace with Thorin. When the Dwarves, Men and Elves were to attack, Gandalf warned them Orcs and Wargs were coming. Gandalf managed to convince Thorin, Dáin Ironfoot, Bard and Thranduil to instead attack the Orcs, defeating them. However, Thorin died in the battle.
Dáin Ironfoot took over Erebor and Gandalf and Bilbo left to go back to the Shire. On the way back they celebrated with Beorn, they met with Elrond where Gandalf told of Dol Guldur to Elrond and reached an agreement that Sauron had to fall for good. Gandalf and Bilbo recovered the gold they buried in the troll hoard kept by Tom, Bert, & William. Gandalf left Bilbo in the shire, telling him how he was a fine person in a very wide world. Balin and Gandalf visited Bilbo years later to tell him news about Dale and Erebor.
The Return of the King[]
In order to warn Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, of the impending battle, the wizard Gandalf the White and the Hobbit Pippin travel to Minas Tirith. However, when they arrive, they find that Denethor has gone insane and plans to commit suicide.
In the Battle of Pelennor Fields, Rohan, a neighboring nation to Gondor, engages Sauron's armies, but its king, Theoden, is assassinated by the Witch-king of Angmar. Eowyn, the niece of Theoden, who had assumed a man's identity in order to fight, kills the Witch-king with Merry's assistance, temporarily defeating Sauron's troops. The advent of the black fleet from the west, the vision of which caused Denethor to commit suicide, temporarily rallies those forces, but when they learn that the fleet is commanded by Prince Aragorn of Gondor, their morale is destroyed. Aragorn intends to confront Sauron at the Black Gate when he himself arrives. He fights with the Mouth of Sauron here as the two armies get ready for combat.
Frodo succumbs to the Ring's influence on Mount Doom and dons it, becoming invisible. Sam finds Gollum and Frodo battling over the Ring, and Gollum bites off Frodo's finger to get his hands on it. Gollum celebrates the return of his "precious" by dancing before falling into Mount Doom's lava and losing the Ring in the process. Sauron dies, and the Ring is destroyed. The Eagles save Sam and Frodo from Mount Doom's eruption. Aragorn is made King of Gondor a few months later.
In the epilogue, Frodo travels with Bilbo, Gandalf, and Elrond as they depart from Middle-earth. In order to reassure Sam that a happy life is still in store for him, he gives him the Red Book of Westmarch, which is primarily made up of Bilbo's memoirs with a few extra pages. The movie concludes with Frodo leaving the Grey Havens, and Gandalf reassures them that Hobbits will eventually have descendants among humans to protect their own survival.
Ralph Bakshi[]
He made good friends with Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Gandalf most likely convinced Bilbo to go on his quest with the Dwarves to reacquire Erebor like he did in the books. When Bilbo's 111th birthday comes. Gandalf arrives and wishes Bilbo a happy birthday. Bilbo disappears mysteriously after his speech and Gandalf meets him in his house where Gandalf convinces Bilbo to give the ring to Frodo. Bilbo does so and leaves to Rivendell. After the party, Gandalf leaves and does research on the ring for 17 years. After those short 17 years, Gandalf reunites with Frodo and shows him that the ring Frodo inherited is indeed the One Ring after he tosses it into the fire. Gandalf tells the story of the rings to Frodo and tells him to leave the Shire to avoid getting caught with the ring as Sauron has many spies. He find Samwise Gamgee stalking them while they're outside talking of what to do and has Sam go with Frodo before leaving to consult with Saruman.
Gandalf eventually meets with Saruman to ask for his council on what to do with the One Ring, Saruman tries to convince Gandalf to ally with Sauron and take the One Ring from whoever has it. Gandalf refuses and Saruman traps him atop Isengard. Gandalf eventually escapes with the help of an eagle. Meeting Frodo at Rivendell, they form and alliance with Elrond, Gimli, Legolas, Merry, Pippin, Sam and Boromir, forming the Fellowship of the Ring. They try to walk on the Misty Mountains but find the heavy snow to not be crossable and go to the Mines of Moria.
In the mines, the Fellowship get attacked by Orcs and eventually, the Balrog of Moria. Gandalf and the Balrog fight, leading to both of them falling into a pit and the Fellowship going without him. Unbeknownst to them however, Gandalf fought with it and fought with it up to above the mists of the world. Gandalf eventually threw down the Balrog and the Mountain they were on was destroyed, Gandalf wandered on many roads and eventually died. However, he was revived to finish his mission as Gandalf the White.
Gandalf the White meets Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas when they chase an Uruk-Hai pack who captured Merry and Pippin. However, Gandalf reveals Saruman's Orcs will attack Edoras in two days, leading them to rush to Edoras as him convincing Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas that Pippin and Merry are in no danger. Gandalf, Gimli and Legolas arrive in Edoras where Gandalf reveals to Theoden that Grima Wormtongue is in league with Saruman and convinces Theoden to bring the people of Edoras to Helm's Deep. Eventually, Gandalf splits with the people going to Helm's deep to look for Eomer and his men.
At the Battle of Helm's Deep, Saruman throws magic balls to blow up a wall and allow the Uruk-Hai to go into the fortress and slaughter everyone there. As the Uruk-Hai march in, the people of Theoden fallback into the caves there. Theoden, Aragorn and a few other soldiers ride out to attack some of the Uruk-Hai. As the fight ensues, Gandalf and the Riders of Rohan come and kill the Uruk-Hai, saving the people of Edoras. Gandalf and the Riders of Rohan ride on as the film ends on a cliffhanger.
