Rex Salazar is the titular protagonist of the series, Generator Rex. He is capable of creating machines protruding from his body using machines that are capable of transmogrifying any form of matter called Nanites.
He is voiced by Daryl Sabara, who also played Juni Cortez in the Spy Kids movie series and by the late Japanese Dub, he voiced by Showtaro Morikubo, who also voiced Shikamaru Nara from the Naruto franchise.
Biography[]
Rex started as a child who was inflicted with a fatal disease, and the only way his parents could cure him was to use experimental-stage Nanites. They cured him, but they also inadvertently caused a chain reaction called The Event. Rex's parents were killed in the blast, and Rex himself along with almost half the planet was turned into what would be eventually called an Exponentially Variegated Orga, or EVO for short. Over the years, he made allies with a self-concerned man named White Knight and an organization he started called Providence with hopes that he would be able to gather the pieces of his memory The Event scattered to the winds.
Within Providence, he was under the mentorship of a mysterious man named Agent Six, developed a crush on a slightly older woman named Dr. Holiday, and made friends with a chimpanzee EVO named Bobo Haha and a human named Noah Nixon (Noah was secretly working for White Knight acting as his spy, but Rex eventually found out). However, Rex also made very dangerous enemies, such as Van Kleiss (who knew almost everything about Rex's past due to the fact that he caused The Event), Quarry (Rex's first enemy), and White Knight's darker, younger, and more feminine counterpart, Black Knight. It was during his war with Black Knight that he discovered that there were more powerful Nanite models than the ones coursing through his veins called Meta-Nanites which, if evil forces were allowed to control them, can tear apart the universe. Eventually, he learned that his parents designed them and intended them for Rex and no one else. Finally, he cured every E.V.O. on Earth once he got all the Meta-Nanites together at last. He was last seen at the ready when Providence alerted him that a mad scientist was attacking a city with a giant robot.
Personality[]
Like most teenagers who grow up secluded and isolated, Rex is overconfident, impulsive, and rebellious. He is quite headstrong, which according to Van Kleiss, he inherited from his mother, Violeta. He has a quick wit and is constantly making jokes, even in the direst of situations, often falling into sarcasm. However, when Rex needs to defend himself, he does not hold back. Aggressive and reckless, Rex prefers to smash anything that gets in his way, much to Providence's annoyance. However, he eventually begins to show more discretion and consideration. Rex has also shown a selfless side to his personality, as he takes pride in curing many EVOs at his own risk. He has also shown an empathetic side to his personality, for instance, he understands that many of the EVOs he encounters were previously conscious people who still have loved ones concerned about them, and never resorts to execution no matter the species. Another example would be when Rex was the only one to see things from both Agent Six's and Serge's opposing point of views when discussing Aquania.
Like any teen, Rex also faces tough and conflicting feelings about his situations, like his position at Providence. While he is loyal to the organization, sometimes the pressure of being the only person that can cure EVOs becomes too much for him to handle. Consequently, he sometimes breaks out of the base to go on "road trips", as he calls them, to blow off steam. However, he always returns, perhaps out of a sense of duty, purpose, and caring for his team. He also tends to be sympathetic towards others in similar situations, namingly Circe and Breach. For instance, although Circe was than willingly joined the Pack, he understood her confusion and its relation of being an EVO and her hesitance behind joining Providence. When Breach was torn on her treatment by Van Kleiss and the Pack, Rex reached out to her to lend a helping hand, remedying her with the same tactics he used on himself. Ultimately, he never gave up on them.
Rex has also been shown to be clever. For example, Tuck stated that Rex improvised the voice activated nano-ink tattoos that Rex, Tuck, Skwydd, and Cricket have, after a problem they had with an EVO that could shape-shift. Coming from a family of scientists, Rex is quite intelligent, as shown when he was able to take high school courses with ease. After taking a trigonometry pop quiz, Rex casually told Noah that it was "just trig" and explained that it was like aiming his cannon. Another trait that goes hand in hand with Rex's cleverness and wit is Rex's ability to manipulate his enemies. At one point Rex willingly tricked Van Kleiss by fighting NoFace, knowing that Van Kleiss needed him alive, while NoFace wanted him dead. However, due to the circumstances, Rex pretended to lie unconscious while Van Kleiss and NoFace fought each other for Rex's life. He also used Biowulf's insecurities and fear of being replaced by NoFace to persuade Biowulf's assistance in the long run.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Technopathy: Capable of using his nanites to interface with any technology which allow him to control it and communicate with it. Through progress after he got his technopathy powers, it is improved and became stronger than before like the time where he took complete control of the entire Providence base to disarm hidden bombs. It can enhance his capabilities like reprogramming machines and understand the features of machine once communicating with it.
- EVO Curing: One of his most important abilities, he can cure beings with EVO powers.
- Machine Shapeshift: Rex can shape his nanites into different type of machinery/weaponry. He can shapeshift his hand or anything of his own body into a weapon. They can easily be destroyed but can be reformed easily without any discomfort.
- Smack Hands: Rex's arms become a pair of giant fists that increase his strength and punching power. Has a Combat Drill mode that allows Rex to tunnel through the ground, or add additional power behind his strength.
- Big Fat Sword: Rex's arm becomes a giant blade that can easily cut through metal and stone. Has a saw-blade mode to sharpen its cutting ability.
- Boogie Pack: A pair of turbine wings grow out of Rex's back and enables him to fly.
- Punk Busters: Rex's legs become a pair of giant super boots that enable him to easily jump over hundreds of meters.
- Slam Cannon: A giant cannon sprouts in place of his arm that uses its maw to grab surrounding environment to fire with great force.
- Rex Ride: A hoverbike that is capable of driving over 200 mph. Rex can transform the front of the bike into a battering ram.
- Blast Caster: A giant whip equipped with a dynamo that enhances its power with electricity.
- Funchucks: A pair of giant nunchucks that are attached to both of Rex's arms. He can spin them at an incredible speed and then launch them at once. Rex can also use them to generate a destructive energy pulse, allowing him to shoot light blue bolts of energy at his enemies. Can also used as a giant flashlight to see in the dark.
- Bad Axes: A pair of giant blue axes that can one shot Providence jets.
- Block Party: A pair of gauntlets that create an energy shield to block attacks. Capable of deflecting atomizing energy blasts.
- Sky Slyder: A hover board that can fly at incredible speed.
Transformations[]
- EVO Form: Rex demonstrated the use of a giant bio-mechanical form that had most of Rex's current builds, including a version of the B.F.S. on one arm, Punk Busters for legs, Slam Cannons on both shoulders, and a Smack Hand on the other arm at a young age. While in this large and imposing form, Rex demonstrated typical EVO-on-the-loose behavior, and after reverting to his human form, he lost his memories.
- Omega EVO Form: As a complete armor is activated by the Omega-1 Nanite, it is a powerful robotic body. Rex activated the form to defeat the Consortium. It appears that the robotic armor has fiery blue flames as hair and blue colored armor. Unlike his other Full-EVO form, Rex is in control of himself.
Equipment[]
- Goggles: Originally a normal set of goggles that provided basic eye protection like protecting Rex's eyes from the sun or when he went flying at high speeds, but later on Rex got an upgrade to his goggles which gave him a variety of visions including infrared vision, microscopic vision, nano vision, and x-ray vision. They were used to locate the Omega-1 Nanite inside Alpha's body.

Trivia[]
- Rex means "King" in Latin. His last name, Salazar, translated from Old Spanish means "old hall" - from the words "sala" which means "hall" and "zahar" meaning "old".
- Rex has at least a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish and Chinese. He tends to interlard his speech with Spanish wording.
- According to Caesar, Rex understands Spanish but does not know how to speak the language properly, often humorously mispronouncing words. Dr. Holiday volunteered to help him polish his skills.
- Rex seems to sleep in his normal everyday clothing (most likely so that he is always ready for action).
- Since Rex does not remember his true birthday, Providence had his "birthday" scheduled on the day he joined Providence. Ironically, Rex was conscripted to Providence on Six's birthday, causing the two to share the same birthday.
- Rex has a criminal past, due to working for Quarry and being his top lieutenant.
- Rex's machines are powered by gravity and produce selenium as a side-effect. Additionally, Rex naturally gives off small amounts of selenium (Caesar compared this process to be akin to dandruff).
- Despite his long track record of defeated EVOs, Rex has had poor fighting skills and has gotten better throughout the series.
- Rex is shown to have some sculpturing skills.
- Rex has a scar on the back of his left knee that he got from playing on some lab equipment when he was seven.[
- Rex wanted to play the accordion when he was little.
- At some point Rex wanted to be an undersea explorer.
- Rex is good at playing volleyball and ping pong but is a lousy soccer and basketball player.
- Noah noted that Rex always starts the offensive with the smack hands and that he should "change it up a little".
- When he was young, Rex used jokes to cope with difficult situations.
- Rex sometimes wears Six's suits as formal attire.
- When Rex was younger, he drew a picture that resembled his bio-mechanical form. This could allude to Rex's inspiration for his machines.
- Rex did not have a teddy bear when he was a kid.
- Rex used to share "stomping grounds" with John Scarecrow when he was in Hong Kong.
- Rex can use his nanites to change out of his AMP suit.
- Rex likes a rock band called the Trendbenders.
- Rex used to wear underwear over his head and act out Lucha Libre movies, earning him the nickname Cabezas de Trapo.
- Rex makes a brief cameo in "Crossover Nexus" where he was defeated & turned to statue by Strike. He & the rest of the heroes were freed & went home afterwards after strike was defeated.
