Billy Lee is one of two main protagonists of Double Dragon, alongside his brother Jimmy.

He was portrayed by Scott Wolf (1994 film), Ryo Horikawa (Double Dragon II), Hikaru Midorikawa (Neo Geo), Michael Donovan (TV series), and Jeff Luke (Neon).

Biography[]

NES Version[]

In this version, Jimmy Lee (the Player 2 character in the arcade version), serves as the main antagonist. After defeating Willy, the original final boss from the arcade game, Jimmy will appear before the player for the true final battle.

NES Story: Double Dragon is the story of Billy and Jimmy Lee, twin brothers who learned to fight on the cold, tough streets of their city. Their expert knowledge of the martial arts, combined with their street-smarts, has made them both formidable fighting machines.

But now Billy is faced with his greatest challenge: his girlfriend, Marian, has been kidnapped by the Black Warriors, the savage street gang of the mysterious Shadow Boss! Using whatever weapons come to hand - knives, whips, bats, rocks, oil drums, even dynamite - Billy must pursue the gang through the slums, factories, and wooded outskirts of the city to reach the hideout for his final confrontation with the Shadow Boss...his brother Jimmy!

Appearance[]

Billy Lee is a young Asian-American who's appearance bares a striking resemblance to Bruce Lee, his signature color is blue.

In the Double Dragon arcade trilogy, Billy has a 1950s-styled blonde side-fringed hairdo and wears a vest with pants all made of dark-blue leather, with a tattered white shirt, steel boots, arm wraps, and a white hachimaki (that is only shown in the artwork).

Most console and handheld versions of Double Dragon re-depicted Billy as having dark-brown spiky hair, a vest with pants that are a bright-blue, bronze leather boots and spiked gauntlets (that are only shown in the artwork).

Misc.[]

  • In the Neo Geo fighting game, his moves are lightning based even in his transformed state.
  • In the film, when Billy is in his transformed state, his gi is capri blue instead of his usual blue.
  • In the Double Dragon comic adaptation by Marvel Comics, Billy is occasionally portrayed wearing green clothes rather than his usual blue ones.

Trivia[]

  • His last name "Lee" is based on Bruce Lee, while his first name "Billy" was based off of the name of Bruce Lee's role as Billy Lo from Game of Death (1978).
  • The original Japanese version of the game was partially inspired by the films by Hong Kong action star and martial artist, Bruce Lee. The creator combined elements from Lee's Enter the Dragon with that of his own life to create the game's story, such as the Lee brothers operating a dojo with tons of students, and fighting waves of henchmen in the underground lair of the crime-boss.
  • In the Neo Geo fighting game, Billy's moves are lightning-based, whilst Jimmy's moves are fire-based.
  • Billy appears in River City Girls as the owner of Ocean Heights' dojo, whilst Jimmy appears as the owner of Crosstown District's dojo. They are voiced by Dan Avidan and Arin Hanson, repsectively.
  • In the original Double Dragon, Billy was a blonde guy, whilst Jimmy had auburn hair. Later in the series, they both switched hair colors, with a few exceptions where Billy is once again seen with blonde hair.
  • As shown on the Japanese arcade flyer of the game, the Double Dragons both have 1950s-styled hairdos which consists of a blonde side-fringed haircut for Billy Lee and an auburn duck-tailed mullet for Jimmy Lee. In later games as well as the cartoon, the Lee brothers would both have hairstyles similar to Kenshiro and Ein from episodes 113 to 122 of Hokuto no Ken (1983).
  • Jimmy's appearance in the Famicom version may be inspired by either Rei or Raoh from the 1983 manga, Fist of the North Star, whilst Billy (or at least his first Famicom version and later iterations) may be inspired by the character Kenshiro. Moreover, the cover art for the Famicom port of Double Dragon bears a similar art style than that usually seen in said series.
  • Billy and Jimmy could be inspired by Swan and Ajax, respectively, from the 1979 film The Warriors.
    • Billy and Swan both have a calm demeanor, yet won't hesitate to engage enemies who stand in their way. Moreover, in The Warriors (2005) minigame Armies of the Night, Swan rescues his girlfriend in a similar way that Billy saves Marian.
    • Jimmy and Ajax both wear red waistcoats and have a similar hair color. They're both good at brawling and grappling, and they both have the same dog-eat-dog attitude (Ajax attempts to fight his leader Swan to become the leader himself, and Jimmy fights his brother for his girlfriend).
  • The character Ryūichi from the Kunio-kun franchise of beat 'em up games – which in turn directly inspired the creation of the Double Dragon series – was loosely based on Billy Lee. The iconic Double Dragon theme even plays whenever he and his twin brother, Ryūji, appear and both are often referred to as the "Dragon Twins". After the release of Double Dragon IV, however, Ryūichi was instead based on Jimmy Lee. Nevertheless, in Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san!, Ryūichi was once again inspired on Billy Lee. This was intentional, as Hiroyuki Sekimoto is the game's director (Billy has brown hair in all of the Double Dragon games directed by Sekimoto), but in the game he is described as having a composed personality (which fits with Billy in Rival Showdown, but is a contrast to Billy's personality in Double Dragon Advance and Double Dragon IV).
