The shortest route was a detour. It was a detour that was our shortest path.
~ Gyro Zeppeli.

Julius Caesar Zeppeli, better known as Gyro Zeppeli, is the deuteragonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run. He is a master of using Spin using his Steel Balls, and joins the Steel Ball Run to win the freedom of Marco, a child who is planned to be executed for treason. Gyro rides the horse known as Valkyrie, and has access to the stands Scan and Ball Breaker.

Gyro is voiced by Shin'ichirō Miki in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven and by Kenji Hamada in the video comic adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run.

Biography[]

Past[]

Gyro was born in Naples to the prestigious Zeppeli family. He was trained to use the Spin by his father while studying to be an executioner. He eventually succeeds at his studies and became an executioner upon reaching adulthood. One day however while looking for his missing collar hanger, he met a young boy who was sentenced with execution. Feeling sick, the executioner attempted to defend the boy in court in which he received a deal from a lord: Bring prestige to Naples and the king will give an amnesty to some criminals. Gyro agreed and went to America to compete in the Steel Ball Run.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run[]

At some point after his arrival in America, Gyro challenges a man to a duel using his steel balls as a weapon. His fight was witnessed by the main character of the part, a paraplegic jockey named Johnny Joestar who touched the Spin imbued steel ball resulting in his legs working temporarily. Despite the executioner's refusal, the cripple ends up joining the Steel Ball Run which interested Gyro. He decides to take Johnny with him.

In his first race, Gyro successfully overcomes 2 of the most skilled contestants before deciding to attack a particularly lucky contestant, endangering another one. This results in the executioner being put in last place which was just enough to keep him from getting disqualified.

On his way to the second race, Gyro shows another demonstration of the Spin's offensive capabilities by defending himself from an attacker called Mrs. Robinson. This results in the attacker's defeat. The duo decides to camp for the night and was attacked by the Boom Boom family who possess stands which can magnetize their targets. They managed to escape but the family decided to frame Johnny, resulting in Mountain Tim coming over to attack the two.

After being trapped in iron sand and clearing the misunderstanding with Mountain Tim, the 3 successfully kill off 2 out of 3 members of the Boom Boom family. Johnny and Gyro continued on their way, getting attacked by other assassins before finally realizing the reason for the attacks: the cripple has been carrying around a corpse part which gave him his stand.

At their journey, Gyro decided to explain his past as an executioner as well as the existence of attackers from enemy countries, demonstrated by an attack by Oyecomova, a Neopolitan assassin. The duo were eventually able to work together and take down the attacker. Continuing their journey, they are attacked again by another assassin, the Pork Pie Hat Kid who had managed to snag the executioner and use him as bait. After a long struggle, Johnny figured out that the kid's stand can be used as a way to attack him back and he successfully shoots him down

In the second race, Gyro ends up in fourth place due to a distraction. On their way to the third race, he and Johnny were attacked by Dr. Ferdinand's army of dinosaurs and a transformed Diego Brando which were the result of the doctor's stand, Scary Monsters. the executioner was almost turned into a dinosaur but was able to recover with the power of a corpse part which granted him a new ability called Scan. In the third race, Gyro's horse is lightly sabotaged by Diego, resulting in him ending up in fourth place, again.

On their way to the fourth race, they become trapped in a time loop created by a stand known as Mandom which belongs to a man named Ringo Roadagain. Gyro fights the assassin who begins to taunt his motivations during their fights. Eventually he discovers a genuine and selfish reason to win and kills Ringo who congratulates him for doing so.

In the fourth race, Gyro was able to overcome Diego which results in the latter being unable to compete for some time while the former finally ended up in third place. After completing the race, they are met by Lucy Steel who explains to the two that the president is looking for the Saint Corpse parts. The executioner manages to defeat an assassin named Blackmore who owns a stand which is powered by rain, attacking him as soon as the rain ends.

Their way to the fifth race was going smoothly, up until an assassin named Sandman attacks them. Due to the assassin's stand, Gyro was injured. Luckily he was able to explain another lesson, allowing Johnny to awaken a stronger version of his stand. With Sandman defeated but the 2 severely injured, they lost a corpse part. Thankfully after all this misfortune, the fifth race went smoothly and the executioner ended up in fourth place, again.

Before the sixth race starts, Gyro and Johnny are met by Sugar Mountain who offers them many valuable items at the cost of honesty before threatening them into trading away the items they received. Despite being hunted down by the Eleven Men, the executioner was able to figure out how to trade the items they have, by buying protection. He and his companion were able to trade away all the items they received, even the Saint Corpse part before he could turn into a tree.

Before they could get to the sixth race, Gyro and Johnny are met by a pair of government agents named Magent Magent and Wekapipo. Gyro was able to knock the former out while the latter's expertise with Spin proved too hard for him to beat. Luckily, he was able to utilize the Spin and pull himself out of the situation, resulting in his opponent's defeat. He decided to spare him as well as give him information regarding Lucy Steel. The sixth race went surprisingly very well with him and Johnny ending up in the first and second place.

Before the seventh race, Gyro and Johnny were attacked by Axl Ro, a traumatized veteran with a stand which can breathe life into guilt. During the fight, the executioner sees various items he felt guilty of losing including several of his steel balls which were once destroyed. Luckily the cripple was able to beat his opponent with his strengthened stand and an unexpected attack from a third party. Unfortunately during this race, Gyro ends up in sixth place.

During the journey to the eight race, Gyro was attacked by an agent named D-I-S-C-O who he beats by confusing the agent. He was then tasked in figuring out who shot Johnny who later reveals that he was shot 3 times by alternate universe counterparts of the characters present. After witnessing Diego and Hot Pants being killed off by Funny Valentine, he and Johnny attempt to approach him. Due to a very unlucky injury suffered from a fish bite, the executioner ends up with a carotid severed thanks to the luck altering properties of Love Train.

In a final fight against Valentine, Gyro uses his strongest technique which is known as the Golden Rectangle which requires his horse to be running at a natural speed. With this, he was able to summon a stand from his steel ball which severely injures Valentine and ignores his stand. Despite this, he eventually succumbs to his injury and the president ends up surviving the attack. Before dying however, the executioner gives away his final lesson, allowing Johnny to strengthen his stand one last time and defeat Valentine.

Trivia[]

  • The likely namesake for his given name is the gyroball baseball pitch, a difficult throw popular in Japanese baseball circles.
  • Gyro's racing number is B-636.
  • Gyro was able to see Stands before he achieved one of his own. He is the first and so far only Zeppeli to have a Stand.
  • Gyro refuses to let a women ride him or on Valkyrie, stating that Lady Luck would be jealous if he let another woman ride with him.
  • He is one of the few characters to gain more than one Stand in the manga, though it could be seen as evolutionary. The first was Enrico Pucci who possessed a Stand that evolved to two other forms. Emporio Alniño could be considered as well, with his dual ownership of Weather Report alongside Burning Down the House.
  • He is one of the few characters to possess a Stand and lose it, others being those implanted with Stand Discs.
  • Like his counterparts in the original timeline, he died fighting, in protecting a JoJo.
  • In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: JoJolion, when Yasuho Hirose and the then-unnamed protagonist enter a hat shop, Gyro's hat can be seen on display behind a replica of Josuke's sailor hat.
  • In the Italian translation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, Gyro's name is written as J.Lo Zeppeli , referencing the singer Jennifer Lopez. In Japanese, both "Gyro" and "J.Lo" are written almost identically.
