But there's something out there. I don't know what it is, but I saw it. Much larger than any of those zombies, and it's coming after me.
~ Sherry, to Claire, in Resident Evil 2.
Thank you for being so nice to me... For helping me. I'm really glad I met you.
~ Sherry, to Claire.
I'm not going to let anything happen to you - the world needs you!
~ Sherry, to Jake.

Sherry Birkin is a protagonist in the Resident Evil series, serving as one of the two deuteragonists of Resident Evil 2 and its remake (specifically the deuteragonist of Claire's story), a major protagonist in Darkside Chronicles, and one of the main protagonists in Resident Evil 6, serving as the deuteragonist of Jake's campaign.

She first appeared in Resident Evil 2 as a troubled child trying to escape the danger in Raccoon City. She is infected with an embryo by her father, William Birkin, who is a monster at that time. Luckily, she is rescued by Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. She returns in Resident Evil 6 as an adult teaming up with Jake Muller, being tasked to bring Mueller back to the states to make a vaccine against the C-Virus. She still has the genetic coding of the G-Virus that gives her accelerated healing, and increased physical condition.

She was voiced by Lisa Yamanaka in Resident Evil 2 (1998), Laura Bailey in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Edgen Riegel and Maaya Sakamoto in Resident Evil 6, and Eliza Pryor and Rio Sasaki in the Resident Evil 2 remake. Biography[]

Early Life[]

Sherry Birkin was born around 1986 to doctors William and Annette Birkin, two virologists who took part in T-Virus research at Umbrella's Arklay Laboratory. Due to her parents' busy work schedules, Sherry had a strained relationship with them, and she was frequently neglected once William and Annette transferred to the NEST. Sherry's youth is not much known, but she was enrolled as a student at East Raccoon Elementary, and Annette entrusted her with a locket on her eleventh birthday. The locket was actually related to their research, and Sherry's safety was important to them, not wanting her to be around strangers who could be after Golgotha.

When Umbrella Security arrived in William's lab and left him for dead, they stole samples of Golgotha, resulting in William using the last sample to turn himself into "G". William then attacked Umbrella Security, but released the T-virus into the sewers, which contaminated the water that the people of Raccoon City collected. Sherry somehow managed to reach the Raccoon City Police Department, and decided to hide around the police station due to officers becoming infected themselves.

Sherry encountered both Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, and would later be kidnapped by Brian Irons in one account of the Raccoon City incident. Sherry would become infected herself, but the accounts of different, such as William encountering her in the Raccoon City Orphanage, or being infected in the sewers.

Sherry's condition worsened due to the Golgotha infection, but she was successfully treated by Claire by using the DEVIL vaccine from NEST. Sherry and Claire later reunited with Leon onboard a train to escape NEST as it was self-destructing. After Leon and Claire dealt with a fully mutated William, Sherry, Claire, and Leon found themselves in Arklay County. After the events of Raccoon City, Sherry was taken into custody to protect her from the threat of Albert Wesker. Though protected by Derek C. Simmons, he would use her blood to develop the C-Virus. After Wesker's death in 2009, Sherry was offered to be a federal agent, and agreed after becoming more aware of bio-terrorism.

Resident Evil 6[]

Serving in the Division of Security Operations, Sherry was tasked by the government to locate Albert Wesker's son, Jake Muller, and bring him back so they could use his blood samples to make a vaccine. Sherry managed to locate Jake, who is a mercenary; he won't volunteer his blood unless compensated with $50 million. Sherry calls headquarters, after which reveals they agree to his terms, thus he follows Sherry. Unfortunately, throughout Edonia, they are pursued by an unstoppable, larger than average Tyrant, known as Ustanak. They two eventually managed to escape from Edonia with the assistance of Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans, who allowed them to pick up by a BSAA helicopter.

While flying across the mountains, they were attacked by a unit and survived the plane crash. To Jake's horror, Sherry seems fatally wounded, as metal debris is piecing her torso; she tells him to remove it, but his mercenary work gave him enough understanding of medicine to realise this would kill her. However, Sherry insists, which Jake abides; after it is painfully removed, Sherry's wounds begin to heal, until she is completely recovered. Jake is shocked, grilling her about it, and asking why she didn't offer herself to experiments to find a vaccine. Sherry notes that she already underwent the experiments, which she notes were more painful than she could take, but still did them, however, her blood didn't have the answer, thereby she was sent to find Jake.

The two would attempt to find shelter, the close proximity they need to keep warm seeming to unnerve Jake, while Sherry was too focused on the mission to understand the potential intimacy. To answer his earlier question about the origin of her abilities, Sherry alludes to her childhood horror, when her monstrously mutated father infected her in order to reproduce; she was cured thanks to Leon and Claire, then later tests seemed to indicate no trouble. However, the G-Virus left a harmless remainder that evolved in her body, giving her powers such as a healing factor; due to being inspired by Leon and Claire, and the responsibility of her powers, Sherry admits to Jake that she wants to save people like they saved her. Jake seems moved by her story, but outwardly remains aloof as he was before.

After escaping the mountain and Ustanak again, they were eventually captured by Dr. Carla Radames (who appears to be a duplicate of Ada Wong); Carla reveals to Jake that his father was Albert Wesker, and honestly but disdainfully noted that Wesker had tried to destroy the world. Jake and Sherry taken to China to be experimented on by Neo-Umbrella, who take samples from Sherry to reverse engineer the G-Virus remnants that gave her abilities, and take samples from Jake, using his unique DNA from a Wesker child that can both cure and unlock further mutations in viruses, with the terrorist group aiming to do the latter.

After six months, Sherry and Jake managed to escape from their restraints in the laboratory complex; they have an awkward moment as they have to change from the revealing hospital gowns into their clothes. Jake sadly ponders about his father, noting that if Wesker was a monster, then he must be a monster, too. Sherry rebukes this notion, noting that her own father was also a monster, but that doesn't make her one, neither does Wesker's evil mean that Jake is also evil; Sherry notes it is through one's own choices that determine their identities, not the sins of their fathers.

They escape the facility, learning it was located within Lanshiang, China, where they encountered Leon and Helena Harper. Leon is surprised but happy to see Sherry again, however, he and Helena note that Simmons was responsible behind the bio-terrorist attacks, which shocks Sherry since Simmons is the chief of her agency; their conversation is interrupted by Ustanak, who they eventually defeat, but become separated by plane wreckage.

Sherry and Jake interrupt a confrontation between Simmons and Carla, with Leon and Helena being present. Sherry confronts her superior with the information she heard about his role in causing the C-Virus; Simmons insultingly confesses, deriding Sherry for spilling the info out in the open, and criticising her failing to understand his insane jingoist mentality. As Carla infects with Simmons with a syringe dart, the chaos erupts, which leadsto Sherry and Jake being captured by Dr. Radames' J'avo.

Sherry and Jake were taken to an underwater laboratory complex, but managed to escape from their constraints and encountered Redfield and Nivens once again. Redfield revealed that he killed Jake's father, and acknowledges that he understands that he wants vengeance. Jake asks if the kill was just for his work or was personal; Redfield admits it was both. Jake aims his gun at Redfield; Nivens aims at the young man, but Redfield tells him to stand down. While Jake is tempted to take revenge, Sherry touches his shoulder, which makes him renounce the revenge; albeit, Jake still admits that he dislikes Redfield, which the older soldier accepts.

A giant cocoon hatched, forcing the group to split up in the facility; Redfield and Nivens take the fight against the newly spawned creature, Haos. Sherry and Jake take an alternate route, which crosses paths with the Ustanak again; they battle it above a magma pit underneath the complex, and seem to defeat it. The facility is beginning to collapse, so they mount a lift at the base of an extremely long acute angled passage, which rapidly ascends with the two clinging on to it. An eruption of lava chases them, at its head is the wounded but still alive Ustanak. Sherry and Jake need to hold on to the lift, so they both hold a magnum pistol; they together pull the trigger. Ustanak is shot in the head, it growls, yet relinquishes its hold on the lift, it is consumed by the fiery lava. As Sherry and Jake hold on to the lift and each other, Jake expresses his gratitude for Sherry saving him, implied to be both the sense of his life and his soul.

After the C-Virus outbreak and the death of both Simmons and Radmes, Jake was taken to the US and allowed his blood be used for vaccine research, which managed to contain the virus. In lieu of his $50 million price, he instead insisted on $50. Sherry continues work in the agency, now free from Simmons' corruption; Sherry hopes to see her friends, like Leon, Claire, and Jake, again, but is content to wait as long as it takes, and will be engrossed in work ridding the world of bioweapons. Unbeknownst to her, Jake continues his mercenary life in a destitute country, but asks a small child just for an apple, which he gratefully accepts and protects him from the encroaching bioweapons; thus shows how Sherry had inspired him to adopt a more altruistic and compassionate way.

Personality[]

As a child, Sherry was quite precocious, which was likely a result of how her scientist parents frequently neglected her as they were too obsessed on their research, thereby forcing her to become more self-sufficient and mature than what is normal for her age. Even so, Sherry had a love for her parents, perhaps showing that despite being limited, her interactions with them were positive; at the very least, it seems like her mother, Annette, truly loved her daughter, and what time she could spare, she enjoyed with her. William, however, seemed to be especially absentee, and his obsession with his work was such that he considered his laboratory creations as his "true" children; despite her father's absence and dangerous work (which implied either ignorance or disregard of the threat to her), Sherry would try to appeal to him after he is horrifically mutated into G, with a tone that displayed she believed he could have resisted his virus' compulsions.

Sherry was fearful of new people at first, but once Leon and Claire earn her trust, she becomes quickly fond of them, and expresses sincere concern for their well-beings; in spite of being terrified by G, Sherry would beg her mutated father to spare her new friends. This fearlessness would extend to when she attempts to evade danger alone; while terrified, she kept a level of calm that helped her avoid notice, when an average child her age would have already been sobbing. While precocious, Sherry had enough childlike innocence that after escaping Raccoon City, she was able to joke about Leon and Claire's "relationship," giggling about them possibly adopting her.

As an adult, Sherry was more mature than average, akin to her adolescent maturity, and she had a healthy confidence that allowed her to easily stand up for herself. Her experiences in Raccoon City had been traumatising, yet she didn't allow it to become trauma; she was simply grateful to have survived such an ordeal. Sherry used her past as a reason to help others when they face similar nightmares; her motives were also due to inspiration from her saviours, Leon and Claire. Another element were the powers she gained from the G-embryo, which while removed, left enough material to evolve into a healing factor and greater stamina and strength; Sherry felt this benefit from a nightmare obligated her to save others.

Sherry's strong moral compass made her blunt to people when they appeared to lack one; although, she wouldn't dismiss them, rather attempt to change their minds to have a kinder, more positive outlook. She was obedient and loyal to her agency, but her sense of justice was strong enough that she could defy the orders of a superior; her belief in protecting people was such that she found sacrifices for the "greater good" an unacceptable option. Sherry did have an incredibly strong sense of loyalty, as she still considered Leon and Claire friends in spite of years of separation; upon reuniting with Leon, she was pleased, and was willing to listen to his claims despite Simmons' order to apprehend him. Her loyalty is not unconditional, as she is smart enough to know when it is no longer deserved, with Derek C. Simmons' irrational justifications for mass murder making her willing to openly fight her former chief.

While mature, her upbringing within laboratory walls and training by government organisations, meant that she was denied a regular childhood and adolescence, therefore she didn't develop social skills. Sherry had interactions, but they were with adults, most of whom were emotionally detached researchers, only being interested in the abilities she had acquired, rather than her. Sherry didn't understand some social cues, such as failing to notice through Jake's sarcasm that he was starting to believe her optimistic aims. Sherry can briefly fail to comprehend intimate tension, but upon noticing it, becomes shy and withdrawn, in contrast to her usual confident personality.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Resident Evil 2, Sherry wasn't aware that her father was "G", but in the DLC Of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil 2 remake, she is aware that the creature is her father.
  • Sherry looks younger than her actual age due to the G-virus remnants in her body; the virus itself gives regenerative powers. Despite the treatment that removed the G-embryo from her body, Sherry noted that what remained adapted.
  • Sherry can heal from what would normally be lethal impalements, thanks to her healing. However, Sherry must concentrate to forcibly speed up the healing; she notably was shivering and groaning in pain as her back wound shut and collapsed for breath shortly afterwards.
  • As Claire was the only real human contact Sherry had over the years, she was likely given "the talk" by Claire to prepare her for when she returned to society as an adult (since she wouldn't be growing up in a proper social environment).
