Heroine Overview

If I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic!
~ Amy after Silver beats Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.
Have no fear, Amy Rose is here!
~ Amy Rose
Hello. I'm Nimue. But most people call me the Lady of the Lake. Come out and see me at the lake sometime.
~ Amy Rose as Nimue

Amy Rose, (also formerly known as Rosy the Rascal), is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Knuckles the Echidna) of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

She is a close friend of Sonic the Hedgehog and best friend of Cream the Rabbit. Since meeting Sonic on Little Planet, Amy has become one of his closest and most loyal allies. She wields the Piko Piko Hammer, a powerful melee weapon which she uses with skills second to none and never leaves home without.

Amy is a cheerful, though slightly erratic girl, with a positive attitude and boundless energy who proves herself to have a pure heart and will not let anything stop her from doing the right thing.

In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Emi Motoi in Sonic Shuffle and by Taeko Kawata in all Sonic games since 1998, including the anime Sonic X.

In the English version, she is voiced by Lynn Harris in Sonic the Hedgehog CD and Jennifer Douillard between 1999 and 2004. Lisa Ortiz then started voicing Amy in Shadow the Hedgehog, then was replaced by Cindy Robinson in 2010. In the Netflix series, Sonic Prime, she is voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent who also voiced Smolder and Silverspoon in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and did the singing voice of Pinkie Pie in the said series.

History[]

Before the events of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Amy Rose was already obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog. Having always loved fortunes and other mystical practices, it only made sense that she would possess her own tarot cards. Using them, she was told that she was to have a "destined" encounter with Sonic on the Little Planet. Excited, she rushed over to Never Lake, the place where the small planet appears one month out of the year, and quickly made it to the terrain.

It wasn't long before she ran into her crush, Sonic, in Palmtree Panic, and couldn't help but excitingly grabbing onto her hero, a fact he was none too pleased with. Her happiness was short lived, for as she continued to follow Sonic into Collision Chaos, she was kidnapped by Dr. Eggman's latest creation, Metal Sonic. Though Sonic eventually rescued Amy from her capture, and saved Little Planet from Eggman's grasp, he did not reciprocate Amy's advances.

While she would try to become a part of Sonic's inner circle, it would not be until Eggman's attack on Station Square that Amy was able to become part of the main cast of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed[]

Amy is a default and playable character in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Amy drives a small pink car and is playable on every track. When her all-star is active, she shoots out multiple Piko Piko Hammers to attack her on track rivals. During her all-star, her theme song My Sweet Passion plays for roughly ten seconds.

SEGA Heroes[]

Amy is a playable green and common campaign hero in SEGA Heroes. She can be achieved after earning 10 Amy character shards. She appears in the campaign story mode, helping Ax Battler take courage to defeat Dremagen. In the story, she later teams up with AiAi, Blaze Fielding, and Death Adder. She later goes on to meet Wren, Rolf, Beat, Ageha, and other SEGA characters.

Sonic Mania Adventures[]

After the events of Sonic Forces, during winter, Metal Sonic is covered completely in snow. Eventually though, a young Amy Rose emerges from the nearby bushes during a stroll, only for some snow to fall on her head. As she brushes the snow off her head while walking however, she trips over one of Metal Sonic's quills that are protruding from the snow. She takes a look back at Metal Sonic, who turns his head to face her. Amy is initially startled, but after a moment, Metal Sonic puts his face back in the snow. Amy then notices that the palm tree above Metal Sonic is beginning to break, and quickly pushes Metal Sonic away before the palm tree can fall on him. Once Metal Sonic looks at her again however, Amy gets scared and starts wracking Metal Sonic's head with her Piko Piko Hammer. Regardless, Metal Sonic makes no response to the wracking he receives and instead puts his head into the snow. Ceasing her hammering and noticing that something is wrong, Amy decides to pick up Metal Sonic. Once she makes him balance on his leg, a dazed, but angry Flicky pops out of Metal Sonic's torso and kicks him in the head, causing the broken Metal Sonic to fall back down on his back. Feeling sorry for Metal Sonic and noticing the heavy snow, Amy decides that she cannot bring herself to abandon Metal Sonic and intends to return him to Eggman.

Starting her journey, Amy drags Metal Sonic through Mushroom Hill Zone and Ice Cap Zone before finally arriving at Dr. Eggman's lair. Wandering up to the front door, Amy gets Metal Sonic on his feet and places a red bow on his forehead, something which Metal Sonic takes notice of. Amy then rings on Eggman's doorbell and turns to leave, only to stop as she remembers something. She subsequently places a flower in Metal Sonic's hand for him to hand over to Dr. Eggman, before turning Metal Sonic towards Eggman's front door and hiding behind some rocks.

Personality[]

Amy is a kind-hearted hedgehog who is always willing to help anyone around her, regardless if she’s close with the individual or not. Her bubbly personality creates an enchanting aura of bliss for those around her. However, Amy Rose is not always happy go lucky as she can become feisty and fiery when encountering situations that endanger those who she wishes to protect, especially against evil individuals such as Eggman and his robots.

When Amy is aggravated, she attacks individuals through the use of her Piko Piko Hammer, which she swings to smash everything she aims at. Those around her interpret her to be a damsel in distress, though despite her cutesy persona; Amy Rose is one you can rely on to get the job done.

While she used to have a deep infactuation with Sonic and would seemingly stop at nothing to try and win his affections, as of the recent games, as well as the Sonic Fast Friends promotion, she seems to have mostly toned this down, and while she is implied to still hold some feelings over him, she has seemingly given up in her attempts to win his love.

Amy is an energetic tomboy. However, she is not a butch tomboy, as she still is a bit girly by wearing a dress and by having traditional feminine interests like shopping and fashion. But she still has masculine interests as she is a formidable fighter and is very able to use her hammer. She is also usually the only girl in a group of guys.

Powers and Abilities[]

Amy does possess super speed, and, despite being slower than certain other Speed Type characters, she is one of the few Speed Types that don't augment their speed with the use of a special object or power (for example; Shadow uses his Hover Skates and Chaos Boost, Blaze uses her pyrokinesis and Fire Boost, and Jet the Hawk uses extreme gear). This, along with general sneakiness, allows her to be able to catch Sonic from time to time. In many games, such as Sonic Heroes, she's usually one of the speed characters.

Amy's primary method of attack is her Piko Piko Hammer which she keeps in Hammerspace, with the Piko Piko Hammer, Amy can inflict major damage to her enemies. Amy is rather skillful with her hammer and is able to use it in a wide variety on moves and attacks, such as performing a somersault known as the Hammer Jump, she can also use it to perform the Tornado Hammer, and a move called the Propeller Hammer, to float through the air.

In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Advance, Amy lacked the Spin Jump and Spin Attack, and instead Amy could only perform a standard jump and a short leap and a headbutt attack. Later games have since given her these abilities, allowing her to perform similar to other characters.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Amy is a playable character in 2-player mode. Unlike Sonic and Shadow, she cannot perform the Spin Dash in this game, and can only do a somersault with her hammer in her hand. Amy also grinds and boards a little bit faster than the others as well. As with all other characters in two player mode, Amy can perform special attacks when a certain number of Rings have been acquired; if 10 rings are collected, she can speed up like Sonic and Shadow. If 20 rings are collected, she can use a special attack called "Storming Hearts," which is similar to Sonic's "Sonic Wind" attack and Shadow's "Chaos Spear" attack. If 30 rings are collected, Amy is able to stun her opponent with her "Amy Flash" attack which freezes the opponents' controls leading them to fall into pits if done at the right time. Amy seems to have access to hammer space, as she is able to conjure a hammer out of nowhere and can summon more than one.

In "Sonic Battle" she has the ability to psychically manifest clones of Sonic while under stress.

In Sonic & the Black Knight, Amy has a special move where is able to whack her hammer into the ground and send out a dome-shaped energy wave called "Rose Typhoon."

Theme Songs[]

Names[]

  • "My Sweet Passion" - Nikki Gregoroff (Unlike other characters, Amy has kept this theme song throughout her many game appearances, such as in the ending of Sonic and the Black Knight when Sonic tries to explain why to her why he didn't show up for his date).
  • "Follow Me" - Kay Hanley (This theme song is shared with Big and Cream in Sonic Heroes).

Trivia[]

  • Amy is the first and most recurring female character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the second being Rouge the Bat.
  • Amy appears in the mobile game SEGA Heroes as a common green playable character.
  • In the Sega CD release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD in America, Amy was referred to as "Princess Sally" in the game manual, possibly to connect her to the Sonic animated television series released that same year. However, the Sally that showed up in the cartoons was not Amy. Subsequent re-releases of Sonic CD jettison any references to Amy being named Sally. Interestingly, she was clearly stated as "Amy" in the earlier European manual for Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
  • In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Amy has three lashes instead of two on some sprites during cutscenes.
  • Amy was the first female character introduced in the game series as well as the only female hedgehog of the series.
  • In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Amy is the strongest character in terms of Smash ability, being the only character who can reach Level 3. (Knuckles and E-123 Omega can only reach Level 2 Smash ability.)
  • Amy Rose is the only member of Team Rose that is affected by the brainwashing of the Overmind Voxai in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
  • In Sonic R, Amy is one of two characters who races in a vehicle rather than on foot. The other is Doctor Robotnik.
  • If Sonic the Fighters is to be believed, Amy Rose did not wear undergarments in the classic era - harmless pink fur covers her body underneath her skirt. This was not changed in the HD release. In addition to this, Amy's muzzle and arms were colored the same white hue as her sclera instead of peach in the original arcade release of the game due to color palette limitations, although pre-rendered graphics featured her with the correct colors. This was not fixed in the Sonic Gems release, but was fixed in the HD release.
  • In Sonic Riders, Amy sports a different, racing outfit throughout the game, but in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Amy wears her usual dress in the story cutscenes and in the story level where she races Storm. However, in the Single and Multiplayer modes, she wears the same outfit that she wore in Sonic Riders.
  • Amy is the only playable character in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) to not travel through time at any point during the game.
  • Amy is the only character that appeared in Sonic Rivals that did not appear in Sonic Rivals 2.
  • Ironically, in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, despite being the speed leader of Team Rose, Amy's attack is slower than other speed leaders like Sonic and Shadow. She is also the strongest attacker of her team, despite Big being the power leader.
  • Amy's hair has grown slightly longer in recent games. The back side of her hair was noticeably shorter than the hair at the side of her face in Sonic Adventure but that part of the hair has been longer since Sonic Unleashed. When she was younger, her nose and back hair on her head looked very similar to Sonic's, however, it all got shorter on her newer design.
  • In the DS version of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Amy's character and vehicle selection picture shows her car with ears and head mirrors. However, while racing as her, they are not shown.
  • Strangely, Amy appears in the French guide for Sonic & Knuckles, even though she makes no appearance whatsoever in the game. In that guide, it was said that Amy had been kidnapped by Knuckles.
  • She is also the only hedgehog whose name does not begin with an "S".
  • She is also the only hedgehog who is not shown to be able to use Chaos Control.
  • All of the cars Amy has driven in racing games have been old-fashioned convertibles, similar to how Sonic has driven sports cars and how Knuckles drives off-roaders.
  • Amy's last name, Rose, can be considered a play on words. A rose is a flower that is connected with love, which can be related to her crush on Sonic. It is also a play on her color, because in French, rose translates to pink, her fur color. Her first name, Amy, could also be derived from the Japanese word ame, meaning candy, related to Amy's cute personality, but also rain, which can be related to her quick changing temper and power when she's angry. It could also be derived from the French name Aimée, which means beloved which also fits with her connection to love.
  • Like Sonic, Amy is a speed type character in the normal series, but in the Mario & Sonic series and in SEGA Superstars Tennis, she is an All-Around type instead.
  • With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode Metal, Amy is the only major character from the Classic games who is still around and who has yet to get her own game.
  • Amy Rose is one of four characters to appear in every Sonic the Hedgehog series racing game to date.
  • Although in Sonic Advance Amy cannot typically Spin Dash or Spin Jump, when Amy is forced into a ball, Amy lacks the standard spin animation and an unusual, high pitched noise can be heard.
  • Amy Rose was one of Lisa Ortiz's favorite roles to do voice work for.
  • Amy is the only game character confirmed to use magic outside of the Storybook series.
  • In Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA- 2nd, another Sega video game, Amy's iconic Piko Piko Hammer is an unlockable item for Kagamine Rin, where it is Rin's favorite item.
  • Amy is one of the few speed types not to enhance her natural speed in any way.
  • Amy is one of only two characters to appear on the tab for selecting Sonic World for Dream Figure Skating in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, the other being Sonic.
  • Amy being Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend is actually a mythology gag based on her counterpart Amy, the girlfriend of Nicky, from the 1992 manga. Her personality seems to be very similar to that of her counterpart as well.
  • While Amy makes no appearance in Sonic Mania, smaller, robotic versions that resemble her are used by Dr. Eggman during the boss fight of Metallic Madness Zone against Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. These robots try to approach the heroes in a similar way the real Amy did with Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, except they explode upon contact.
