Wof, Arf
~ The wolf's signature bark sound.

Wolves, or The Tamed Wolves (also known as Dogs) are the optional deuteragonists of Minecraft.

They are the tameable, a neutral mob that the player can tame and be their trustful, loyal, and caring companions, and will do anything to protect the player from the hostile mobs, or even other players. Wolves were added in Beta 1.4, making them the first tamable mob, as well as the first mob to show any loyalty to the player. Due to the combination of the game's fame and how long wolves have been part of the game, a strong connection has been made with wolves and the game's fanbase.

Appearance[]

Wolves in minecraft possess white and gray fur and dark gray eyes. They have four legs and a tail just like a real wolves, and a nose sticking In front of its face. The wolves appear small, about 1 block tall and 1 and a half block in length. Baby wolves are tiny which only take up less than one block. The tamed wolves will have a default red collar on its neck, although the players can change their collar colors into anything they desired to with a colored dye.

Personality[]

The wolves in their wild side, are neutral, defensive, territorial and occasionally hostile. However, when tamed, they are friendly, loyal, trustful, kind, good-natured, protective, caring, and lovely beings that will always follow any players who tamed them. Acting as a helpful companion to the player, they will instantaneously follow their orders. They are also determined and relentless fighters when protecting the player. This applies even when taking them to the End to fight the Ender Dragon. However, wolves do weak damage to the Endermen in that dimension, so it's likely the wolf will die.

The dedication wolves have to players extend to the fact that they will sacrifice themselves to the hostile mobs just to protect their owners, even if it means being killed. So overall - keeping with the real life connection that humans and dogs have - often act as the game's "man's best friend", which also unlocks the advancement, "Best Friends Forever".

The overall morality of wolves can be questionable, as they'll attack even passive mobs (such as villagers) that the player attacks. Wolves will also be loyal to other mobs the player has tamed, such as cats, in that tamed wolves will not attack other tamed mobs if the player attacks them.

Biography[]

Spawning[]

In the Java Edition, wolves spawn naturally in normal forests, taigas, giant tree taigas and snowy taigas, along with all variants of these biomes in packs of up to four.

In the Bedrock Edition, wolves only spawn naturally in taiga and snow taiga biomes, but not in giant tree taiga biomes. 16.6% will be babies. They require light level of 7 or above to spawn. Naturally-spawned wolves are untamed, and will become hostile if attacked by the player.

Behavior[]

Wolves exhibit three different states depending on how the user interacts with them:

Wild wolves have gray fur, a drooping tail, and their eyes consist of two white pixels and two black pupils. They are neutral towards the player and will attack rabbits, foxes, skeleton and their variants without provocation. They may run away when spat upon by llama, depending on the strength of the llama. They will not despawn.

Angry wolves have a constant growling and fearsome appearance. Their tail becomes straight, their eyes become red and the contrast level of the fur increases, revealing dark patches of bristling hair and a mouth line raised in a slight snarl. Angry wolves are only hostile towards mobs that attack them. They can see attackers even if they are invisible.

Tamed wolves have friendlier, more submissive looking eyes. They have a red collar around their neck, which can be dyed using any color of dye on the wolf. Pressing use on the wolf makes it sit and remain in place, where they will not follow the player around. Tamed wolves will attack players or mobs that injure their owner, unless the target has the same owner or is on the same team. Standing wolves will attack players or mobs that are attacked by their owner, unless the target has the same owner or is on the same team. They will not attack creepers, ghasts, or tamed horses regardless of owner. Standing tamed wolves will attack skeletons and their variants without provocation, but not sheep, baby turtles or passive rabbits. So regardless of all the wolf behaviors, wolves will become hostile towards a player or other mob that attacks it, unless the attacker is the wolf's owner or is otherwise on the same team, and will also cause wild wolves and standing tamed wolves in a 33×33×21 cuboid centered on the attacked wolf to become hostile towards the attacker.

Skeletons and their variants, foxes, baby turtles and passive rabbits will actively avoid wolves. Killer rabbits (which only appear through cheats or commands in the Java Edition) will attack wolves. Sheep will ignore wolves other than their random running after being damaged. The behavior of puppies is the same as tamed wolves. Puppies have larger heads, similar to other animal babies. Wolves are 0.85 blocks tall, and baby wolves are 0.425 blocks tall. The textures of the wolves will be tinted dark gray once submerged.

Movement[]

Standing tamed wolves will wander randomly when near their owner, but will follow if more than 10 blocks away and will teleport to a nearby free block (if any) if more than 12 blocks away. Besides making travel easier, teleporting can be used to rescue them from lava or pits. Wolves will appear to shake off water after swimming. Tamed wolves will appear to shiver when it is raining and they are not covered by a roof.

Role[]

The Wolves will first appear as wild, neutral animals who do nothing except to survive in the wild like predators, and attack those who harms them. But this can be avoided by the player by just ignoring and avoiding them in the first place. Once the player has bones from the skeletons, the player will then be able to tame the wolves and make them their pets. Tamed wolves would eventually follow the player wherever they go (except when being told to sit). Most players keep their wolves besides their shelter or house, trying to act as "guard dogs".

Once the player is involved in a dangerous situation (mostly by being invaded by the hostile mobs) the tamed wolves will try to protect the player by simply attacking their enemies that provoked them. Hostile mobs will also attack the player's wolves if they have indirectly provoked them (mostly skeletons). Sometimes whenever the player's wolves die, most players would be saddened afterwards, sometimes avenging their wolf/wolves' death. Most tamed wolves survive if the player is careful enough to keep them alive during the night. Wolves can also act as the player's sidekick, as they would follow the player's adventures.

For example, if the player commands them to sit or stand, their wolves would eventually sit or stand, or if the player was being attacked by the hostile mobs, wolves would protect their owners if it means sacrificing their own lives.

Wolves can also be friendly to the villagers and iron golems (if the player doesn't harm them) as they simply stare at them with their friendly eyes. Tamed wolves can optionally participate in village raids only if the player commands them to follow them, and that includes the iron golems. Most wolves easily die in an illager raid if the player didn't look after it for a while, so it is completely optional for the players to let them participate in raids or not. Wolves can also be taken to the Nether, as long as players would keep their eye on them, although this is also optional, as most players don't let their wolves follow them in the Nether, and would simply die if they do so, as the Nether is not a very safe place for them, let alone for players.

Wolves can also be taken to the End dimension, as long as the player is not being attacked by endermen, as wolves would easily die from the endermen attacks, but it is recommended for the player to bring a massive Iron Golem army to take care of the endermen, or the player can just wear a pumpkin to avoid being attacked by an enderman, but wolves can die if the Ender Dragon indirectly kills them on sight. Whenever the Ender Dragon is defeated, and the player returns home, they can optionally continue their journey if they want, or say goodbye to all of their companions, most likely their wolves, by simply qutting their worlds.

Even if the player quits their world, or dies on Hardcore mode, wolves would still wait for the player's arrival, even if it takes them years or decades, sitting there, completely untouched. This is also same in Creative mode, where if players have wolves living there, wolves would wait until the player opens back their worlds.

Since 2019, the year Minecraft was revived in popularity, many players in the world wanted to check on their tamed wolves again, which are unbelievably still waiting for their owner's to come by and see them. This was commonly known to many players as 'nostalgia', as many players teared up when the glory days of the game were done.

Minecraft: Story Mode[]

The wolves appear as minor characters in the Minecraft: Story Mode series. However, it only appeared in the Season 2 of the game. The wolves that were seen in the game are Wink, Stacy Plays' dog, and The Champion City auction where too many puppies were being sold by Stella. A puppy with a unique black and white texture can be found in the Fred's Keep within the Underneath.

Minecraft Dungeons[]

Wolves can be summoned with the Tasty Bone artifact, following the player and helping them defeat mobs. Just like in vanilla Minecraft, wolves can teleport to their summoners if they get far enough away or reuse the artifact. The Tasty Bone can be obtained very early on in Creeper Woods, but can also be found the Creepy Crypt, Redstone Mines, and Dingy Jungle.

In the Camp, a wolf appears near the player's house as an interactable mob, giving the player an achievement if they pet it. In the Creeper Woods section of Ancient Hunts, some wolves can be found hiding within a cave. However, these wolves are only ambient, so they cannot be interracted with or attacked.

Wolf Armour can also be found in various missions, granting the wearer a 20% damage boost aura and reduced potion cooldown.

Minecraft Legends[]

Wolves are passive mobs that reside in large packs throughout the Overworld. They can be gathered using the Banner of Courage and sent to attack Piglins.

In other media[]

The wolves also appears as the deuteragonist, if not major protagonists on several Minecraft medias and appearing in many animation videos such as Wolf Life, etc. The wolves became a major part of the Minecraft community and was praised due to its loyalty to themselves and became an internet meme worldwide also. It appeared in many Minecraft merchandises.

Heroic Acts[]

The Tamed Wolves can show love and kindness throughout the game, as they will kindly help out the players' objectives, and would act as their companions.

  • Protecting and serving their owners whenever they are in harm's way.
  • Showing kindness and love to the players who tamed them.
  • Sacrifices themselves just to keep the player safe from the hostile mobs.
  • Helping the player and the villagers defeat an army of illagers during a village raid (optional).
  • Waiting the player to arrive at their worlds, if by means taking years and decades without leaving their owners, expressing their loyalty and patience to the player.
  • Accompanies the player to wherever they go, and will attack those who tried to harm them.

Trivia[]

  • If a tamed wolf is named with a name tag, its name is shown in the chat when killed.
  • Wolves can teleport into transparent blocks.
  • If the player attacks a wolf and then give the aggressive wolf food that it can eat, hearts will appear as animals do when entering breeding mode, however the wolf will not breed and will continue attacking the player.
  • In singleplayer mode, if the player punches a wild wolf and leave its field of vision, it will stare at them and not move at all. Going back into its range will make it continue pursuing the player.
  • Aggressive wolves have the path-finding of most mobs, such as going around pits, but may sometimes try to jump to get a player that's separated by a 1-2 block gap. In two block gaps, they won't make the jump and fall, but may manage to damage the player.
  • If the player kills their own tamed wolves, their wolves will still drop exp.
  • Untamed wolves use their hostile appearance when they are attacking sheep, skeletons or rabbits. They will change back once the targeted mob dies or gets out of their range.
  • Attacking a wild wolf on peaceful won't damage the player, but they assume the hostile appearance and try to push them, similar to a baby slime.
  • A wild baby wolf's head grows significantly when attacked.
  • If the player attacks a wolf, but then moves a large distance away (e.g. 70 blocks), the wolf will still appear hostile, but will exhibit neutral behavior.
  • Wolves that are tamed by the same player can accidentally attack each other while attacking another mob, leading to a fight.
  • Wolves will periodically attack and kill sheep.
