At the beginning of the film, Ben and Lon were on their way to the New World with English settlers led by Governor Ratcliffe to look for gold there. Their journey took half a year, but they eventually reached the New World. Upon their arrival, Ratcliffe ordered them and some of the men to unload the cargo from the ship, build a fortress, and dig for gold, and they took part in the mining of the gold, and they robbed with other men back and night, and razed for King James himself. Although they were constantly digging, they found no gold, and they and the other men did not even get any food. Later, they and the other men drifted into a state of uncertainty about what Ratcliffe believed in the Indians, and what John Smith told them about, and also that there was no gold at all. And they didn’t know which was right, Smith or Ratcliffe. Then when John Smith was captured, Ratcliffe incited them and other men to fight the Indians, kill them, and save John Smith, but Pocahontas blocked it all, and then they and the other men turned against Ratcliffe as he tried to shoot Chief Powhatan and Smith received the hit wounded at the same time, and then they and the other men captured Ratcliffe, and Thomas told them to put Ratcliffe in chains. After Ratcliffe was imprisoned, they and the other settlers had to return to England with John Smith because it was the only way to save Smith's life. When Smith said goodbye to Pocahontsas, they and all the other settlers set out for England.
