~ Summer's epitaph on the the Cliffside Altar.
Her name was Summer Rose, and she was, like... Super-Mom: Baker of cookies and slayer of giant monsters.
~ Yang Xiao Long, talking about Summer.

Summer Rose is a posthumous overarching protagonist in the world RWBY. is Ruby Rose's deceased mother. Her gravestone is an altar in the Cliffside Forest.

She is voiced by Morgan Lauré.

History[]

Past[]

In Summer's more youthful days, she selected to Beacon Academy and turned into a part and leader of Team STRQ, alongside Taiyang Xiao Long, Raven Branwen and Qrow Branwen. She and the group in the long run graduated to wind up Huntsmen and Huntresses.

Sooner or later sometime down the road, Summer entered an relationship with Taiyang after Raven had abandoned him, the two having a little girl, Ruby Rose, and Summer took to bringing up Raven's little girl, Yang Xiao Long, too. Summer's family lived in Patch as she forgot frequently to convey missions. As indicated by Yang, Summer resembled a "Supermom", "dough puncher of treats" at home and "Slayer of Grimm Beasts" because of her Huntress profession.

It is uncovered by Qrow that Summer recognized and used her capacities through her silver eyes. It is obscure when and how she found her capacities and to what degree.

Death[]

When Yang and Ruby were young, Summer went on a mission and never returned (though it's implied that Salem killed her). Particular points of interest encompassing her destiny are undisclosed or obscure. As per Yang, Ruby was excessively youthful, making it impossible to almost certainly have the capacity to completely appreciate what had occurred.

Taiyang did not deal with the news so well as Ruby; Yang saying that he essentially "close down". It is after this that Yang learned Summer was the second love that he had lost, the main being her mother Raven Branwen, which makes Summer Yang's stepmother.

"Red" Trailer[]

Ruby is seen visiting Summer's Gravestone in the Cliffside Forest during the "Red Trailer".

Volume 2[]

In "Burning the Candle", Summer is made reference by Yang in her back story to Blake Belladonna, trying to get the previous to back off her examination, which Yang said was controlling her.

Volume 3[]

In "Round One" and "End of the Beginning", Ruby revisits Summer's Gravestone.

Volume 5[]

In "The More the Merrier" Ruby endeavors to influence Raven into joining the battle against Salem. Raven reacts, fairly scornfully, "You sound just like your mother", before starting the assault on Haven.

Volume 6[]

In "Our Way", Ruby thinks of Summer to tap into the mental state needed to use her Silver Eye powers, and she successfully petrifies a Leviathan in Argus.

Volume 7[]

In "Pomp and Circumstance", Ruby and Qrow have a conversation about Summer's last mission and the unknown nature of her disappearance. Ruby also wonders what she would've done had she learned the truth about Salem, to which Qrow tells her he believes she would've pressed on, like her.

During "Gravity", Ruby tells Salem that even if killing her is impossible, she can still be stopped. However, Salem looks at the girl and tells her that's exactly what Summer said, and that in the end it wasn't true. Ruby proceeds to break down in grief, thinking of her mother.

Volume 8[]

In "Witch", Yang calls Salem out on all the destruction she's caused and that everyone she's lost was because of her. When Salem scornfully asks who she's taken from Yang, the latter replies Summer, which causes Salem to smile at hearing her name again.

In "Risk", having killed The Hound only to discover that its' core was a Silver-Eyed Faunus, Ruby wonders if Summer met the same fate. Filled with horror and despair, she theorizes to Yang that Salem stopped killing the Silver-Eyed Warriors when she encountered Summer, because she found a new use for them. Despite being devastated by this possibility, Yang affirms that Summer took a risk when she left for her final mission, and that, regardless of how it turned out, she was still her hero.

Volume 9[]

In "A Tale Involving a Tree", Summer is shown in a flashback when Yang and Ruby were children, with Summer telling them the story about The Girl Who Fell Through The World, with Summer telling them about when Alyx got to the Great Tree she was asked who she was. It was later revealed that after finishing the story, Summer lied to Taiyang about going to a "typical" mission, when in reality she went on a mission with Raven Branwen.

Trivia[]

  • Its never really stated how she got together with Tai, but it can be presumed she always had a crush on him and their romance happened by pure chance when Summer pitched in to help raise Yang after Raven ditched them.
    • Since Ruby is only two years younger than Yang, Summer logically became pregnant around the time Yang was only one year old.
  • Summer was loved very much by her stepdaughter Yang, to the point the girl considers Summer to be her real mother over Raven. This is supported by the fact Yang literally declared Summer as such when shouting at Salem.
  • Ruby really never knew Summer, but Qrow and Raven confirm that her personality is very much like Summer's own. Even Salem noted Ruby sounded like Summer.
    • Raven also noted Summer gave irritating comradery speeches like Ruby does.
  • It's implied Ruby copied Summer's dress sense (from photos of her) to honor her memory; given Ruby does not discard her own cloak no matter how many outfits changes she goes through in the series.
  • Her death is implied to have not be actually confirmed, as even Qrow stated Summer "never came back" - so there wasn't a body found. Though Salem confirms Summer confronted her at one point; the witch even gives a coy smile when Yang shouts at Salem for killing Summer.
    • Ruby, however, believes Summer is indeed dead; a victim of Salem's early experiments with combining Silver Eyed people with Grimm ooze.
  • The lyrics in "Red Like Roses Part II" are about Ruby's reaction to Summer's death, Summer herself, and Summer's regrets for leaving her daughter behind.
