We are the Fire Sages, guardians of the temple of the Avatar.
~ The Fire Sages

The Fire Sages are a supporting characters in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. They are a group of bishop-like men who host major events in The Fire Nation and act as its spiritual mentors, such as pronouncing a couple husband and wife during a wedding, cremate and bury people who died during a funeral, and even crown whoever is next in line for the thrown.

Biography[]

They can tell who the next Avatar is and have a general sense of their wellbeing, since they can speak to the spirit world, and were thus aware when Aang returned from the iceberg after being missing for one-hundred years. When The Fire Nation decided to begin The Hundred Year War, The Sages were against the plot of taking control of the other three nations. They helped free Aang when Zuko captured him and were arrested for betraying the Fire Nation. When the war was over they were free and stood on The Balcony in The Fire Nation’s Royal Palace and awarded Aang a medal and crowned Zuko Fire Lord.

Trivia[]

  • The White Sages are typically seen wearing red uniforms, but can occasionally be seen wearing white clothes during events such as funerals. This is likely a reference to the fact that the Fire Nation is based off of China, and white was considered the color of mourning in Ancient Chinese culture.
