Firefly (Chinese: 流螢), also known as SAM (Chinese: 薩姆), is a major and playable character from the 2023 science fantasy turn-based tactical role-playing video game Honkai: Star Rail.
She is a young girl who pilots a mechanical armor called "SAM" and a member of the Stellaron Hunters who is affected with a chronic disease called Entropy Loss Syndrome, she is on a mission in search of the meaning of life.
She is voiced by Song Yuanyuan in Chinese, Analesa Fisher in English, Tomori Kusunoki in Japanese, and Yoo Hye-ji in Korean.
Personality[]
Firefly is a kind and sociable girl who demonstrates care for those around her. When she accidentally texted the Trailblazer while comparing her “script” with the other Stellaron Hunters, she only sent emojis in response to the Trailblazer’s questions. In Penacony, she initially believed that choosing to live inside a dream was a valid way to cope with the stresses of reality, before eventually finding the strength to reject the notion when confronted by Sunday’s similar ideology.
As a Stellaron Hunter, her persona once her armor is donned is one of ruthlessness and reticence. She often resorts to violence before diplomacy to the point that her assignments are quick, to the point, and invariably result in the destruction of any surroundings. She expressed disdain at Kafka’s tendency to “play with” her victims, potentially indicating that she prefers immediate executions as a form of mercy. In spite of this, Firefly expresses a strong desire to break free of this role and lead normal life as an ordinary person.
When fighting alongside the Trailblazer, she exhibits a strong will and bravery, as well as a willingness to sacrifice her own life for the greater good, whether it be to save others, or merely for the benefit of the Astral Express crew. In her conversation as SAM with Acheron and in later interactions with the Trailblazer, she indicates that she has a poor self-esteem, viewing herself as a weapon with little hope for the future (due to her Entropy Loss Syndrome). Additionally, it is hinted that Firefly experiences romantic feelings towards the Trailblazer, having currently gone on 2-3 “dates” while in Penacony.
Appearance[]
Firefly is a beautiful young girl with long silvery blonde hair with a crystal teal ombre that reaches to her waist, fair skin, and eyes in a mix of deep ocean blue and sunset pink. She wears a brown blazer over a green and white dress with a yellow bow tied in the front. She wears white detachable sleeves that are about wrist-length and are held at the wrists with black ribbon-like bracelets — the right side having a white flower decorated with the ribbon-like bracelet, and the left side just plain. She wears a brown headband on top of her hair and two green feathers with a black bow on the left side of her head. At the bottom, she wears thigh-high stockings that fade from a dark color to a crystal teal from top to bottom. The tops of her stockings are lined with golden brass-like pieces. Her footwear consists of black heels with a base of white, with a pair of green gems in the center along with teal ruff-like collars that wrap around her ankles.
History[]
Firefly was born as AR-26710 of the Iron Cavalry Knights of Glamoth’s Firmament Frontline, being genetically engineered and raised to pilot the “Fyrefly Type-IV Strategic Assault Mech”. Created to defend Glamoth and destroy the Swarm invaders, Firefly awoke after the final battle to see her world reduced to a scorched ruin and the bodies of her comrades littering the earth around her. Grieving the loss, she activated her SAM armor and flew into the sky, destroying the planet itself and losing consciousness while drifting amidst the debris. Subsequently, she was discovered by Kafka of the [[Stellaron Hunters and recruited as a weapon for Destiny’s Slave.
During her career as a Stellaron Hunter, she played a key role in recruiting the next member, Blade, and used SAM during the Jepella Rebellion to reduce the city to flames. In the aftermath of Jepella, it is assumed that Firefly received the script for her following mission and infiltrated Penacony, the Land of Dreams, in advance. She presumably relied on Silver Wolf’s aether hacking ability to stow herself away inside Penacony’s Dreamscape, access to which is supposed to be limited only to guests of Penacony’s government, The Family. As a stowaway, she claims to have joined the Iris Family as a small performer and artist, working as a tour guide in her free time and familiarizing herself with Golden Hour before the Trailblazer’s arrival.
