Flapjack is a supporting protagonist in the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House.

He is a red cardinal palisman carved by the witch Evelyn that eventually came under the ownership of Hunter, the Grimwalker of Evelyn's lover Caleb Wittebane.

Appearance[]

Flapjack is a totem in the shape of a bird, similar to a red cardinal, with a scar on the place of the left eye, red feathers with dark red wing tips, a dark red beak, dark brown legs and a black face. It is shown that he can open both eyes in "Hunting Palismen". In the form of a staff, his staff is painted in burgundy. According to Hunter, his staff has several notches.

Personality[]

Flapjack is shown to be an inquisitive and carefree totem, as he was curious to explore the pen with totems before he was returned inside. He is loyal and persistent, first follows Hunter and stays by his side despite his protests. It is also shown that Flapjack takes care, several times trying to push Hunter to talk to Amity, and later even shares a maid berry with him, although that was all he ate. He seems to be reserved when it comes to his past, avoiding the topic when Hunter asks about it. It is also shown that Flapjack is smart and willing to help, breaking loose from his shackles in "Hunting Palismen", switching into his staff form to avoid capture and help his witch, as well as pushing Hunter in the right direction to help him befriend Gus after trying to find food for him.

Flapjack's devotion to Hunter was so strong that he sacrificed his own life to save him on the verge of death.

History[]

Flapjack was created in the Boiling Isles' Savage Isles, having been carved by Evelyn and used by her to convince Caleb Wittebane to come to the Demon Realm. What happened to him between Caleb and his brother Philip's arrival in the Demon Realm (as well as Caleb's death at Philip's hands) and the events of the series is unknown, aside from the fact he received a scar on his left eye during that period.

Sometime in the past, Flapjack came under the care of the Bat Queen and was one of the totems put up for adoption during Hexside Totem Adoption Day for students hoping to acquire one. He tried to leave the pen and later successfully did so, ending up in Luz's bag, where she unknowingly took him home. As soon as Luz realized this (after assuming he had chosen her as his master), she returned him to the pen, only for the two and all the other totems to be captured by the Golden Guard.

After his airship crashed, Flapjack found Luz and woke her up by staying on her shoulder as she and the Golden Guard traveled around Latisse. When the two opponents came up with a plan to free the totems from the Kikimora, and Hunter shared his thoughts about his future, Flapjack felt his desire to help Emperor Belos and became interested in him. After the totems were released, Flapjack told the Bat Queen that he had found the owner, and she allowed him to return to Hunter, who was surprised to find him and took the form of a staff, not expecting it at all.

Later, Flapjack joined Hunter on his Knee trip to get Titan's Blood, despite his protests. Throughout the journey, he continued to fly, landing in several places from the ledges to Hunter's head and even Amity's shoulder. When Hunter started fighting Amity and the King for the portal key, Flapjack repelled the King's sonic attack and allowed Hunter to use it in battle, and later fly away on it when he managed to defeat it. Hunter appreciated that Flapjack stayed by his side, and found that he was beginning to understand the totem, having learned his name when he began his return journey.

After being stranded in the Human Realm, he starts pecking at the floor of the Old House until Amity's foot falls through the floor and she find a rebus. The following day, Hunter believes he saw Belos and promises Flapjack he will keep him safe. During the Gravesfield Halloween Festival, Hunter, as Belos takes over his body, orders him to find the rebus. He hides as Belos takes control of Hunter's body and helps to get Hunter back in control. However, Belos breaks him and, after Hunter takes control, he flies to Luz. After Belos leaves Hunter's body and returns to the Demon Realm, Hunter is unresponsive and Flapjack sacrifices himself to save Hunter, transferring his magic to Hunter in the process.

After hearing Willow doubt herself, Hunter displays Flapjack's signature teleportation ability while attempting to save himself, Gus, and Willow from Willow’s out-of-control powers. Soon after, Willow and Gus figure out that his newfound abilities were inherited from Flapjack's sacrifice.

Flapjack is finally avenged in the series finale "Watching and Dreaming" when Eda Clawthorne, King Clawthorne, and Raine Whispers stomped on Belos' remains after he'd been melted by the boiling rain.

In the epilogue, Hunter bonded to a female blue jay palisman named Waffle who had became Flapjack's successor, a gravestone was made in honor of Flapjack with Hunter's epitaph: "Thank you for finding me".

Hunter, Luz, Willow, Gus, and Amity have also honored him with tattoos of Red Cardinals in his likeness.
