The Fleet Girls (艦娘, Kanmusu, lit. "Shipgirls") are a race of personified ships from many navies around the world and the playable main protagonists of the browser game Kantai Collection. They serve as the good counterpart to the Abyssal Fleet.
Biography[]
Fleet Girls are moe anthropomorphisms of World War II naval ships which are depicted as cute teenager girls or adult women. These personified warships are based on real-life vessels which are explained in detail within the game; the physical characteristics, appearances, and personalities of each of the girls correlate in some way to the real-life vessel (for example, ships with a larger displacement tonnage are usually depicted as older women with more mature bodies, while smaller ships look younger and have less developed figures, with a few exceptions).
Many fans theorize that Shipgirls are spirits of ships who were sunk during the wars such as the Second World War. When ships sunk, their spirits might be reborn as Fleet Girls or Abyssals. According to this theory, Shipgirls were born by the mysterious, supernatural process known as "Construction" in the arsenal of the naval base. Construction uses fuels, ammunition, steels, bauxites and development materials, or just even ship spirits to give birth to Shipgirls. Another supernatural process is called "Scrap", which can return said resources and even make Shipgirls become ordinary humans. Also, many fans believe that Fleet Girls are actually artificially engineered super soldiers who use the names of the WW2-era ships rather than just personified ships. According to this theory, the "Construction" process here is a scientific program used to turn normal female humans into cyborg Fleet Girls, and the "Scrap" process here is a program used to remove their cybernetic implants or, more brutally and tragically, destroy them.
Fleet Girls can do what humans do, such as eating, drinking, sleeping, playing, or even commanding other Fleet Girls. They also have human rights to understand and be alive. Some of Shipgirls, such as Battleships and Aircraft Carriers, use a lot of energy, so they need to eat a lot of foods and drink a lot to recover their energy.
When on the battlefield, Shipgirls can be equipped with riggings. Each rigging usually has main guns, secondary guns, and anti-air guns. Some Fleet Girl can use torpedoes, searchlights (being a minimize version of actual searchlights or left or right eyes), ASW weapons, or aircraft piloted by Fairies. Their main guns can be fired with telekinesis or manual method (when the main guns have a trigger). Some fans believe that Fleet Girls have a cybernetic spine that can be connected to their rigging to enhance their overall condition.
Types[]
Destroyers[]
Destroyers (DD) are versatile Fleet Girls with high torpedo, ASW, and evasion stats, do the detriment of armor and firepower, while having low resource consumption and the most permissive routings. They shine best in night battles with their special Cut-ins.
Light Cruisers[]
Light Cruisers (CL) are very flexible. They utilize medium guns, torpedoes ASW, and artillery spotting. There are two subtypes for Light Cruisers:
- Torpedo Cruisers (CLT): Torpedo Cruisers have the strongest night attack power in the game. They can equip midget submarines to enable opening torpedo attacks.
- Training Cruisers (CT)" Training Cruisers increases experience gained in PVP Exercises. Despite being CLs by several metrics, they are mostly considered as auxiliaries.
Heavy Cruisers[]
Heavy Cruisers (CA) are stronger in surface combat than Light Cruisers at the expense of ASW capacity. There are one subtype for Heavy Cruisers:
- Aviation Cruisers (CAV): Aviation Cruisers are Heavy Cruisers that are capable of using most seaplanes, initiating fighter combat to enable artillery spotting, and with ASW capacities.
Battleships[]
Battleships (BB) utilize large main guns, heavy armor, and second shelling phase, but lack ASW and torpedo attacks. There are two subtypes for Battleships:
- Fast Battleships (FBB): Fast Batteships are Battleships with higher speed and faster repair times.
- Aviation Battleships (BBV): Aviation Battleships are Battleships that are capable of using most seaplanes, initiating fighter combat to enable artillery spotting, and with ASW capacities.
Aircraft Carriers[]
Aircraft Carriers or Standard Aircraft Carriers (CV) achieve air superiority by fighters. They cannot attack during night battle without the right equipment. They must equip dive bombers and/or torpedo bombers to enable regular attacks. There are two subtypes for Aircraft Carriers:
- Light Aircraft Carriers (CVL): Light Carriers are weaker than Standard Carriers, but are capable of attacking submarines and are more permissive routing-wise.
- Armored Aircraft Carriers (CVB): Armored Carriers can still attack in the same way like Standard and Light Carriers with moderate hull damage.
Coastal Defense Ships[]
Coastal Defense Ships (DE) are ASW-focused Shipgirls, they can OASW at 60 ASW but are slow and weak.
Submarines[]
Submarines (SS) are limited to both torpedo phases and night battle. They are only vulnerable to anti-submarine warfare. There are one subtype for Submarines:
- Submarine Aircraft Carriers (SSV): Submarine Aircraft Carriers are submarines that can equip and launch seaplanes.
Auxiliary Ships[]
Auxiliary Ships or Auxiliaries are Shipgirls who focus on support. There are five subtypes for Auxiliaries:
- Seaplane Tenders (AV): Seaplane Tenders are seaplanes-focused Fleet Girls, they can participate in all day attack stages given the correct setup.
- Submarine Tenders (AS): Submarine Tenders are weak but can perform a powerful special attack with submarines and has some special routings.
- Fleet Oilers (AO): Fleet Oilers can refuel other Fleet Girls mid-sortie using Underway Replenishment.
- Amphibious Assault Ships (LHA): Amphibious Assault Ships are needed to develop the Daihatsus Landing Craft. They can perform strong attacks against Installations.
- Repair Ship (AR): There is only one Repair Ship, who is Akashi. She has special repair mechanics and is needed to improve equipment.
