Hero Overview

I know not who you are nor I came to find you. But, may I just say...hi. How ya doin'? The name's Flynn Rider. How's your day going, huh?
~ Flynn introducing himself to Rapunzel
This is the story of how I died.
~ Flynn's opening line.

Eugene Fitzherbert, or better known as Flynn Rider, is the deuteragonist of Disney's Tangled franchise.

He is voiced by Zachary Levi, who also portrayed Shazam in Shazam! and its 2023 sequel, Rocky Rhodes in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Toby Seville from Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, and Arcade Gannon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Character outline[]

Flynn Rider is a career thief on the run for stealing the missing Princess Rapunzel's tiara, who finds himself trying to hide out in her tower. Rapunzel, with no previous knowledge of the outside world, convinces him to accompany her to see the lanterns.

Personality[]

At first Flynn comes off as cocky, arrogant and a little bit self-absorbed. He’s overly concerned about money, wealth and the tiara he wishes to regain from Rapunzel. However, when one gets to know him, he is sensitive, laid-back and good-hearted. As an experienced thief, he is skilled in escaping the authorities, hiding out and stealing right from under people's noses. Thus, he is agile, strong and quick-witted. Flynn's talents also include fencing, horseback riding, scaling and maneuvering over high walls and towers and "superhuman good looks", which unfortunately have no effect on Rapunzel.

For the first part of the film, he is solely focused on thieving and increasing his personal bank, aspiring to bask in his wealth one day own his own private island. However, as he begins to fall in love with Rapunzel, he transforms into a more compassionate, chivalrous and trustworthy person, and changes his priorities. He even willingly gives the tiara to the Stabbington Brothers to keep them off their back (although he never quite loses his initial cockiness and tendency to cause mischief). Flynn loses sight of the importance of becoming rich as he fights to be with Rapunzel.

By the end of the film, Flynn's love for her has grown to the point where he is willing to die so that she can be free. In the ending narration, he claims to have given up thieving. He used to have a rivalry with Maximus, the Captain of the Guard's horse. However, as the film progresses, they become loyal and protective towards one another.

Physical appearance[]

Flynn is of average height and build with fair skin, short dark brown hair, a scruffy goatee and light brown eyes. In response to a fan on a Tangled fanblog, Flynn's animators have said that he's 26.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Eugene Fitzherbert was born to King Edmund and his wife as Horace of the Dark Kingdom, whose family has been protecting the world from the Moonstone Opal, a powerful stone created by a single drop of moonlight that harnesses the power of death and destruction, for a long time. During his infancy, Edmund grew tired of the damage caused by the Moonstone and tried to destroy it once and for all. However, upon doing so, the Dark Kingdom was nearly destroyed in a catastrophic event that killed his wife and cost him the loss of his right arm. he then ordered for a kingdom-wide evacuation to protect his subjects from the opal's destructive power—including Eugene, who was escorted out of the kingdom by a servant woman and later placed in an orphanage. Eugene never knew the truth of his lineage for the rest of his life.

He grew up believing that his parents were fearless adventurers traveling the world to make names for themselves. Eugene remained hopeful that once they did, they would return to the orphanage and take him back. In the meantime, Eugene spent all his days with his fellow orphans. His only companion at the time was his lifelong friend, Arnwaldo Schnitz. Every night, Eugene would read "The Tales of Flynnigan Rider", stories of a rich and dashing swashbuckler who had an abundance of thrilling adventures wherever he went. The more Eugene read it, the more he dreamed of a more audacious lifestyle and decided to break out of his orphan upbringing. Eugene eventually ventured out with Arnwaldo—now going by Lance Strongbow—and grew up into a dashing swashbuckler and gifted horseman under an alias taken from his childhood hero: Flynn Rider. With Lance by his side, Flynn became the most infamous bandit in all The Seven Kingdoms, making enemies at nearly every port. He would also plunder regions all over the world, such as Italy, where he learned to speak Italian. Being drawn in more and more by his new ambition and becoming more and more aloof from the people around him, Flynn sought a solitary life of money and freedom, far away.

Apart from Lance (with whom he eventually lost contact), Flynn formed partnerships with other criminals, one of which being a ruthless kingpin known as "the Baron." During their alliance, Flynn developed a relationship with the Baron's daughter, Stalyan. The two were eventually engaged, but Flynn created a bitter enemy in his employer when he left Stalyan at the altar.

Tangled[]

Flynn eventually forms a partnership with two other criminals, The Stabbington Brothers, and they break into the Castle to steal the crown of the Lost Princess, They successfully do so, but his wise-cracks alert the guards, resulting in a chase. Heading into the forest, the thieves reach a dead-end, though Flynn successfully manages to escape he swipes the crown and leaves the Stabbingtons behind to be arrested. The guards continue to pursue Rider, but he evades most of them, while the captain of the guards, accompanied by his loyal horse Maximus, continue on, with Flynn eventually knocks out the captain and temporarily seizes control of Maximus' saddle. But learns that Maximus is just as dedicated to arresting him as much as any guard, and the two rivals engage in a scuffle that results in both them and the satchel holding the crown, falling over a cliff. Flynn escapes Maximus with the satchel in hand and fearfully searches for a place of refuge, where stumbles upon a hidden valley, housing a mysterious tower, and learning that it has no door, climbs into the household at its peak.

Unbeknown to Flynn, the tower is the home of the Lost princess of Corona, Rapunzel and her pet chameleon, Pascal. They then proceed to wrap him up around her really, really, long hair and is blackmailed into guiding her to the floating lanterns in time for her eighteenth birthday. Flynn remains stoic during Rapunzel's exuberant reaction to experiencing life outside her tower for the first time, but when he finds out she is fearful of the outside world, He uses it to his advantage and takes Rapunzel to a local pub filled with a group of seemingly vicious and hostile thugs. This frightens Rapunzel, according to plan, and Flynn "offers" to return her home, claiming the rest of the world to be as frightful as the pub, and is no place for someone unable to handle said establishment. Unfortunately for Flynn, the thugs recognize the former from his "Wanted" posters and begin a fight over who gets to turn him in for the monetary reward. Rapunzel is able to tame the thugs, as she explains Flynn is a key factor in her experiencing a lifelong dream, to which they sympathize with, revealing to have dreams of their own. This is cut short once the guards arrive, along with the apprehended Stabbington Brothers, much to Flynn's shock. Flynn and Rapunzel are able to escape through a tunnel and share a brief conversation in which he refuses to give her any of his "backstory" but asks a little bit about hers. The conversation is cut short when they discover that the guards have pursued them into the passage. The pair flees but are cornered atop a cliff in a canyon made from a dammed river, hotly pursued by Flynn's two enemies: the guards and the Stabbington brothers. Flynn is able to fight off the guards by using Rapunzel's frying pan, but is bested in a sword duel with Maximus the horse. Rapunzel uses her hair to help him escape the cliff and the horse, but when Maximus damages the dam in order to reach them, the two are trapped in a cave, which begins filling rapidly with water. Panicking, Flynn tries desperately to find an escape under the water, cutting his hand in the process. However, unable to see anything in the darkness, he admits defeat and the two huddle together in the rising water, believing that they are about to die. As Rapunzel weeps, he tries to cheer her up a little by revealing his real name, Eugene Fitzherbert, believing someone might as well know before he meets his end. Smiling, Rapunzel returns the favor by confessing she has "magic hair that glows when she sings", confusing Eugene, until she sings her incantation and lights the darkness of the cave with her hair, allowing Eugene to find a weak spot to dig their way out.

After finding a place to camp later that night, Rapunzel uses her hair to heal Eugene's injured hand. Eugene is evidently frightened by the magic, to the point of near-hysteria, but he quickly calms himself down when Rapunzel begs him to not "freak out." He learns Rapunzel's history, and the nature of her magical gift, which is lost if the hair is cut. Eugene begins to understand her feelings and begins to show more compassion and affection towards her as a result. The following morning, Eugene is nearly captured again by Maximus, but Rapunzel—with the help of Pascal—is able to befriend the horse and convinces the two forge a reluctant alliance for the next twenty-four hours, during which Maximus will not get Eugene arrested. Now accompanied by Maximus, the group arrive at Corona for the festival. Eugene accompanies Rapunzel as she delightedly explores the kingdom, enjoying various activities with her, such as reading at the library, eating, and even dancing (at Maximus's prompting). In during which, the two bond and form a closer connection, with a romance blossoming on the horizon. That night, Eugene takes Rapunzel out on the water in a rowboat to see the lights, wanting her to have the best view for her special day. While they wait for the lights, Rapunzel expresses her apprehension about finally living her dream, and Eugene reassures her and encourages her to find a new dream afterward. During the lantern festival, Rapunzel returns his satchel, but he pushes it aside, openly revealing that he has found something more important than his old dream, and the couple releases their own two lanterns. Eugene and Rapunzel finally realize their love for one another and nearly kiss.

Though this moment is ruined when he sees the Stabbington Brothers on the shore, and appears to come to a conclusion about his satchel. He brings the boat to shore and assures Rapunzel that he will return momentarily. After attempting to abandon his life of thievery in hopes of starting a new life with Rapunzel, the brothers reveal that they know about Rapunzel and her hair, and express their desire to use her for wealth. Eugene is knocked unconscious and tied to a boat, which is set to sail toward the kingdom. When Rapunzel sees his silhouette steering the boat away from her, she is tricked into believing Eugene abandoned her and returns with Mother Gothel to the tower out of despair. Later, Eugene's boat crashes into the guard tower near the jail, jolting him back to consciousness, but as he realizes that Rapunzel is in trouble and calls out for her, he is captured by the guards. The next day, as he is taken to be hanged, he notices the Stabbington Brothers in their own cell. Breaking free from the guards momentarily, he confronts them, forcing them to reveal that Mother Gothel was the one who told them about Rapunzel and her hair. Realizing Gothel's villainy, Eugene tries to escape as the guards forcefully carry him off. Fortunately, the Pub Thugs and Maximus arrive and help Eugene escape the prison, and he and Maximus rush off to save Rapunzel.

After arriving at the tower, he becomes worried when Rapunzel does not answer his calls, but her hair soon comes down to let him climb up. However, when he climbs jubilantly through the tower window, he finds Rapunzel gagged and chained to the wall. He pauses for a second, evidently confused and shocked, and is then mortally stabbed by Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel attempts to flee with the captive Rapunzel, leaving him there to die. Rapunzel resists her and refuses to go willingly, but then promises to submit to Mother Gothel if she will only let her heal Eugene. Mother Gothel agrees and chains the wounded Eugene instead. Rapunzel rushes to his side, but Eugene pleads with her not go through with it, as he would rather die than let Rapunzel submit to Mother Gothel. When his attempts to dissuade her fail, he uses a shard of a shattered mirror to cut Rapunzel's hair, which causes it to lose its power and turn brown. Mother Gothel rapidly ages and dies without the magic from Rapunzel's hair. Rapunzel tries desperately to save the dying Eugene by singing the healing incantation. Eugene stops her and, with his last breaths, tells Rapunzel that she was his new dream, to which she tells him, in reply, that he had been hers. Eugene smiles and dies, leaving a heartbroken Rapunzel to hopelessly finish the healing incantation. She begins to sob, letting a single tear fall onto his cheek. The tear, which is the original drop of sunshine which created the magic flower that healed her mother, shines as it dissolves into the skin and heals Eugene's stab wound, reviving him. He regains consciousness, and jokingly asks Rapunzel, "Did I ever tell you I have a thing for brunettes?" An overjoyed Rapunzel then embraces him jubilantly, and the two share their first kiss at last.

Eugene accompanies Rapunzel during her return to the Kingdom, as she has discovered that she has been its lost princess, and witnesses her reunion with her parents. For his heroic rescue he is pardoned for his crimes and graciously accepted by the King and Queen for returning the princess to them. As the kingdom celebrates the return of the lost princess, Afterwards he readopts his old name, stopped thieving, and happily embraces newfound home and life.

Tangled before ever after[]

Taking place around 6 months after the events of Tangled, Eugene has found a home in Corona Castle, living alongside Rapunzel and her parents. While Rapunzel has apprehensions toward her new life as a princess, Eugene couldn't be more ecstatic with his newfound life. During "Life After Happily Ever After", he reveals to Maximus and the Pub Thugs that he plans to propose to Rapunzel during her coronation weekend, having already practiced his speech and purchased a ring. Once he finally proposes, however, Rapunzel rejects Eugene and storms out the room. Eugene is left confused and tries to talk things over with Rapunzel, but when he visits her bedroom to apologize, he instead finds Pascal covering for the princess, who secretly left the castle with her handmaiden (and rival, slightly due to the fact that her father is the Captain of the Guard) Cassandra. Knowing Rapunzel's father will blow a fuse should he learn of Rapunzel's actions, Eugene teams up with Pascal to distract the king until Rapunzel returns. The following morning, Eugene finds that Rapunzel's magic hair has mysteriously returned, but she refuses to tell him how this came to be. Though he reassures Rapunzel that she can trust him with anything, Eugene helps her and Cassandra cover up the return of the hair from the king and queen.

As Rapunzel spends the day with her parents, Eugene tries to get answers from Cassandra, who berates Eugene for only focusing on what he wants out of life and ignoring Rapunzel's own personal struggles. Later on, the day of the coronation finally arrives. At the ceremony, the royal family is attacked by a band of pirates out for King Frederic's head. Eugene joins Rapunzel and Cassandra as they successfully fight off the villains, but the truth behind Rapunzel's hair is voluntarily revealed to the king and queen during which. Fearful that the return of Rapunzel's magic hair will attract danger similar to Mother Gothel, King Frederic forbids his daughter from leaving the walls of the kingdom without his consent. Rapunzel mourns the loss of her freedom in her bedroom, though she is soon visited by Eugene who apologizes for pressuring Rapunzel with the surprise proposal, who in return apologizes for her poor reaction. He confesses that he is unsure as to why she would reject his proposal, but assures that he is willing to stand by her side to help understand her struggles as best as he can and take their romance slow. He also promises to be patient with her at Rapunzel's request, strengthening their relationship significantly.

Tangled: The Series[]

Season 1[]

In "What the Hair?!", A week after the events of Tangled: Before Ever After, Rapunzel has still yet to tell Eugene the truth about how her hair returned, claiming she simply "woke up with it" one morning. Seeing this as an obvious lie, Eugene starts to question his relationship with Rapunzel, due to her refusal to trust him. By the end, after visiting Cass' friend Varian, Rapunzel finally confesses the truth of how her hair returned, including the fact that Cassandra was the one that helped her escape Corona. Eugene initially plots to turn Cassandra in but decides not to after realizing how important she is to Rapunzel. He nevertheless shows gratitude in Rapunzel's honesty. Afterward, Eugene and Rapunzel continue to hold a healthy relationship.

His rivalry with Cassandra persists, however, which culminates in "Cassandra v. Eugene". In the episode, Rapunzel forces Eugene and Cassandra to work together to escape a prison cell. Following the escapade, they reach somewhat of common ground, though they are still prone to bickering.

A few things that happen to Eugene during his time is how he discovers things in his forgotten past, and how people he met prior to meeting Rapunzel run into him again, most notably his Best friend, Lance, who at first hopes of enlisting Eugene to assist the former in a heist, though, in a turn of events, Eugene and Rapunzel get Lance to reform. Reunited once again, they would partake in a number of misadventures,

The most significant he and Lance partake in is in "Big Brothers of Corona", in which Eugene and Lance are tasked to reform two juvenile thieves that had been plundering Corona. Though he only accepts the assignment as a means to get Lance a job, Eugene comes to genuinely care for Angry and Red and tries to pull them out of their thieving ways for the sake of a better future. Though he fails, Eugene gifts Angry with the first item he ever stole as a keepsake and sees them off.

In "Secret of The Sundrop" On Rapunzel's nineteenth birthday Corona is beset by an automaton attack from Varian. Frederic locks Rapunzel in her room to keep her safe, but Eugene and Cassandra break her out. Varian assaults the kingdom with his pet raccoon, mutated into a huge beast. He kidnaps Arianna to serve as bait to lure Rapunzel into a trap. Varian unsuccessfully attempts to free his father with Rapunzel's hair as the Coronans lay siege to his house. The black rocks appear on the battlefield and trap Rapunzel. She uses her connection with them to defeat Varian, who is arrested for his crimes. The rocks have blown a hole in the border wall, and they point toward an unknown destination, creating a path that Rapunzel is determined to follow.

Season 2[]

Eugene joins Rapunzel on her journey, as does Cassandra, Lance, Maximus, Pascal, Hook Foot, and Shorty. In "Beyond the Corona Walls", Eugene gathers the courage to propose to Rapunzel again, though Lance and Hook Foot believe doing so at that moment is a bad idea. Eugene disregards their caution and practices to himself. Unbeknownst to Eugene, Rapunzel had been eavesdropping and accidentally exposes herself. The two awkwardly try to both address and avoid the situation, leaving Rapunzel anxious and Eugene downhearted. Later on, however, Eugene encounters his ex-fiancée, Stalyan, who wishes to marry him. Her father, the Baron, threatens Eugene by poisoning Lance, claiming that he'll only provide the antidote once the wedding has commenced.

During the Baron's formal announcement of the union, Rapunzel is present and tries to talk to Eugene. Realizing marriage is his only hope of saving Lance, Eugene leaves Rapunzel for Stalyan. Fortunately, Rapunzel refuses to give up and crashes the wedding. The Baron is defeated, Lance is cured, and Rapunzel and Eugene are reunited. After almost losing Eugene, Rapunzel comes to realize how much she really loves him, and nearly proposes on the spot. Eugene, however, requests that she waits until she's truly ready to settle down, not wanting to take away her freedom. Although Rapunzel accepts, she shows signs of disappointment in Eugene's decision to wait, but regardless is happy to be together again with him once more.

Throughout the journey to the Dark Kingdom, while facing a series of strange events and encounters with old and new enemies, Eugene and the others gather the remaining pieces of an ancient scroll that details Rapunzel's connection to the black rocks. Guided by a woman named Adira, Rapunzel's group is led to the Dark Kingdom, where the source of the black rocks dwells: the Moonstone Opal, is being kept. According to Adira, Rapunzel—being the Sun Drop—must connect with the Moonstone to restore balance to all things.

However, as the journey to the Dark Kingdom is nearing its end, Eugene receives a final warning from the ancient scientist and sorcerer, Lord Demanitus that a member of the group will turn against Rapunzel. Eugene becomes worried about the prophecy and when the group finally arrives at the Dark Kingdom, he finds himself separated from Rapunzel and makes a shocking discovery that he is the long-lost son of King Edmund, the ruler of the Dark Kingdom. Edmund explains the series of events that led to Eugene's departure from the kingdom, including the death of his mother. Edmund warns Eugene that Rapunzel must stay away from the opal, fearing that the Moonstone's power will kill her as it did his wife. Eugene agrees and tries to steer Rapunzel away from the opal, but is left with great guilt and conflict over his actions. Eugene quickly begins to doubt himself, believing he doesn't know who is anymore after uncovering the truth about his family, past, and lineage. After a talk with Pascal, however, he comes to his senses, believing he unwittingly fulfilled the prophecy and fully devotes himself to helping Rapunzel fulfill her destiny. Edmund tries to stop them, regardless but has a change of heart when Eugene expresses his everlasting faith in Rapunzel. Edmund not only accepts Rapunzel's destiny but also aids her and Eugene in approaching the stone. Before their mission can be completed, however, Rapunzel and Eugene are betrayed by Cassandra, fulfilling Demanitus's prophecy as she steals and fuses herself together with the Moonstone.

Season 3[]

Following the events of "Destinies Collide", Eugene and Rapunzel learn the truth behind Cassandra's betrayal, discovering she is the biological daughter of Mother Gothel and stole the Moonstone for herself as she is constantly tired of being in Rapunzel's shadow and flees the group. In the aftermath of the tragic events, Eugene, Rapunzel and their friends leave the Dark Kingdom and return to Corona after learning it is currently in danger from Varian and Andrew, who have teamed up and conquered the kingdom along with the Separatists of Saporia. During this time, Eugene expresses concern when he realizes Rapunzel is having difficultly dealing with Cassandra's betrayal and offers comfort and reassurance she is not alone in dealing with the situation. Eventually, with help from a reformed Varian, Rapunzel and the group are able to successfully save the kingdom. However, due to King Frederic and Queen Arianna's amnesia, Rapunzel temporarily assumes the role of acting Queen of Corona and takes on new duties and responsibilities with Eugene by her side. Eugene later visits Rapunzel to celebrate their victory and listens when she is finally ready to talk about her feelings regarding Cassandra's betrayal.

Eugene later receives a surprise when he finds his father, King Edmund has arrived in Corona to pass down a family heirloom and hopes to reconcile and build a relationship together. Eugene, however, is revealed to be upset with Edmund for sending him away as a child and not staying in contact during his life, causing him to resent Edmund and refusing to forgive or acknowledge him as his father. However, when Eugene later finds his room ransacked and the sash stolen, the situation forces him and Edmund to journey together to retrieve it. Although Eugene grows increasingly annoyed and frustrated by Edmund's attempts to bond with him, they eventually begin to find common ground through their shared love for the Flynnigan Rider books and are brought closer together when they encounter and battle against the Stabbington Brothers. However, when Eugene finds the sash in Edmund's possession, Edmund admits he stole it himself in his desperate attempts to spend time together and be a part of Eugene's life. Furious over his father's deception, Eugene decides to return to Corona, but goes back after learning the Stabbingtons have captured him, but falls into a trap and becomes stuck in a cave. During his entrapment, Eugene discovers Edmund's satchel contains his childhood toys, causing him to realize Edmund has been watching over him and is soon rescued by Rapunzel. Together, Eugene and Rapunzel succeed in saving Edmund and reforming the Stabbingtons, but the sash is unfortunately destroyed in the chaos. By nightfall, Edmund gifts Eugene a brand-new sash with colors based on their favorite Flynn Rider book and at last, Eugene begins to forgive Edmund, embracing and acknowledging him as his father, finally beginning a real genuine familial relationship.

Since their return, Eugene happily settles back into life in Corona while he continues to support and assist Rapunzel with her new duties in running and rebuilding the kingdom. Eugene and Rapunzel's love and relationship also continues to grow and remains strong as ever. Eugene continues to comfort and be there for Rapunzel as she still at times struggles over Cassandra's betrayal and Rapunzel encourages Eugene and his ever-growing relationship with his father. Rapunzel and Eugene also take a new step in their relationship as they officially declare their love by signing their names in the new Book of Hearts and are thinking more about their future together with both planning to propose to each other during his birthday. Unfortunately, they must put their engagement on hold once again until they deal with Cassandra (now guided by Demanitus' archenemy Zhan Tiri) once and for all after she returns to the kingdom to exact her revenge.

Following Cassandra's return, the entire kingdom begin to prepare themselves for her next attack. However, the Captain of the Guards decides to retire as he cannot bring himself to battle against his daughter again and appoints Eugene as his successor, crediting him for his role in the countless times he has protected and defended Corona in the past. Although Eugene faces uncertainty with the decision, he eventually accepts the honor of Corona's newest Captain of the Guard after making peace with his past and former life as Flynn Rider.

Afterwards, Eugene begins working together with Varian on "Project Obsidian", a new weapon used to defend the kingdom against Cassandra and later face off against her again after she invades with a mind controlled Brotherhood by her side. Despite their best efforts, however, everyone is forced to flee to the outskirts of the kingdom as Cassandra succeeds in taking over Corona.

In "Plus Est En Vous", Eugene attempts to uplift everyone's spirits following Cassandra's invasion, but everyone is discouraged and downhearted, believing all hope is lost until Rapunzel re-ignites their spirits and prepares them for the final fight against Cassandra and Zhan Tiri, determined to take back their home. Eugene, Rapunzel and the group journey to Lord Demanitus tomb to retrieve his plans to create a device to send Zhan Tiri back to her prison dimension. During this time, Eugene grows worried when he realizes that Quirin has the mark of the Brotherhood on his hand and warns Varian about his suspicions that his father maybe under the control of the Mindtrap talisman. Eventually, they succeed in retrieving Lord Demanitus book and altogether Eugene, Rapunzel along with their friends, family and allies return to Corona and set their plan into motion and begin to build the Demanitus device in Corona Castle. Eugene remains in charge of the group as Rapunzel leaves to confront Cassandra and discover Varian heeded his suspicions when a mind controlled Quirin almost sabotages the group. Eugene and Edmund briefly leave to investigate a sudden earthquake, but return to find that everyone has been sucked into the Demanitus device and transported to the Lost Realm by accident. Edmund and Eugene attempt to retrieve the others, but are attacked by the mind-controlled Brotherhood. Eugene realizes they must find and retrieve the Mindtrap talisman in order to free the Brotherhood once and for all and journeys together with Edmund to Cassandra's fortress. Eugene locates the Mindtrap, but is ambushed by Adira and Hector and discovers his father is also under the talisman's control, learning he has been a member of the Brotherhood all along, leaving Eugene to fight against them all by himself. Despite the odds against him, Eugene refuses to back down and fights the Brotherhood, but is severely beaten until he is rescued by Maximus.

Thanks to Maximus, he is able to gain possession of the Mindtrap and tries to destroy it, but is attacked by Edmund, who prepares to finish him off. Eugene makes one last plea towards his father, confessing how he resented him for sending him away as a baby, but has since finally come to understand his sacrifice as he was only trying to protect him. Eugene declares his forgiveness towards his father who manages to overcome the Mindtrap's power and destroy it himself, freeing him and the Brotherhood. Edmund embraces Eugene as father and son finally and officially reconcile their relationship. Afterwards, Eugene and Edmund along with Adira and Hector, rush back to Corona and are reunited with the others after being freed from the prison dimension. They finally face off against Zhan Tiri, who has gained possession of both the Sundrop and the Moonstone and transformed into her true demon form. Eugene urges everyone to leave as he prepares to go after Rapunzel and fight Zhan Tiri himself, but the others declare their intent to fight for Corona and for Rapunzel as they charge into battle. Despite their greatest efforts, Zhan Tiri encages everyone in Yellow Rocks and chants the Decay Incantation to weaken everyone and plunge the kingdom into darkness. Fortunately, Rapunzel and a reformed Cassandra manage to escape from their imprisonment and work together, finally managing to defeat Zhan Tiri and destroy the evil entity for good and at last reuniting the Sundrop and Moonstone. A weakened Eugene witnesses as Rapunzel uses the combined Sundrop and Moonstone to save Cassandra's life and restore everyone's health through the Healing Incantation for the last time before releasing the power back into the cosmos where it belongs. Eugene and Rapunzel embrace and Eugene offers his hand to Cassandra, showing his forgiveness before bringing her in for a group hug as the trio celebrate their victory and reunion.

Following the end to the epic battle and Cassandra's departure, the entire kingdom rejoices and by nightfall (with Eugene and his Dad staying in touch), Eugene, Rapunzel (with Pascal in tow) go out onto the lake and reflect how much has changed since the first time they were out their. Remembering the promise they made in Before Ever After and their love is stronger than ever before, Eugene surprises Rapunzel with a new ring and proposes to her one more time, to which Rapunzel ecstatically, happily, and finally accepts, and with that, a newly engaged Rapunzel and Eugene once again profess their love and share a passionate kiss.

  • The name "Eugene" is from the Greek Ευγένιος, which means "well-born"; "Fitzherbert" is a mix of Old French "fitz" or "filz" and Old Germanic "Her(i)bert" and would mean something like "son of the shining" (or "famous") "lord" (or "army").
  • Every time Eugene is effected by the decay incantation, he holds his stomach in the same place Mother Gothel stabbed him in the movie.
  • Eugene and Rapunzel made a cameo appearance in the first Frozen film, which lead to many fans to believe that Rapunzel was related to Anna and Elsa, and that Anna and Elsa's parents were sailing off to attend Eugene and Rapunzel's wedding when their ship went down. However, this theory was proven to be untrue in Frozen II, where it showed the true reason behind the parents' journey and deaths.
