My momma always said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
~ Forrest Gump's most famous quote.
Hello. My name is Forrest. Forrest Gump.
~ Forrest introducing himself.

Forrest Alexander Gump is the titular main protagonist of the novel and its Academy Award-winning film adaptation, both of the same name. He is a kind-hearted man with an intellectual disability whose momentous life includes saving his fellow soldiers during the Vietnam War, launching a successful shrimp company, and running across the country. He is the widowed husband of Jenny Curran and the father of Forrest Gump Jr.

He is portrayed by Academy-Award winner Tom Hanks as an adult (who was known for playing Paul Edgecomb in The Green Mile, John H. Miller in Saving Private Ryan, Woody from the Toy Story franchise, and Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) and Michael Conner Humphreys as a child.

Biography[]

His mother had named him after Nathan Bedford Forrest. It is unknown why this is, but his father was "on vacation", meaning he left forever. He also developed polio, causing him to wear leg braces. It was during childhood that he had met his love interest Jenny Curran while they were riding on the bus (that is, after trying to sit in certain spaces but was rejected by other kids, and then Jenny herself invited him to sit with her). He and Jenny got along and taught each other certain things, and they were friends throughout high school. Since childhood, Forrest had been running long ways.

As a child, his mother turned their home into a boarding house in order to make ends meet. At one point they hosted a nice young man, and this young man picked up his signature moves from watching Forrest dance. Sometime later Forrest and his mother saw this young man appearing on television singing "You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog."

When Forrest was in the army, he befriended Benjamin Bufford Blue, known as "Bubba", who eventually died in the Vietnam War, and started a successful shrimp company in Bubba's memory along with Lieutenant Dan, one of the many soldiers he saved in Vietnam. Forrest invested much of his newfound fortune into Apple, turning him into a millionaire and allowing him to give Bubba's family a more comfortable life, but never lost sight of the two women who he loved the most: Jenny and his own mother, both of whom he would lose to illness after the successful and adventurous life Forrest had led. He carried Jenny's legacy in raising their son Forrest Jr., whose genius Forrest holds in high esteem.

Quotes[]

I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is.
~ Forrest to Jenny.
He's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen but is he smart or is he...
~ Forrest to Jenny upon learning that Forrest, Jr. is his son.
Stupid as is stupid does.
~ Forrest' repeated line

Trivia[]
