The Four Heroes are the overarching protagonists of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
They were a group of heroes who had sealed away the Shadow Queen in the Palace of Shadow thousand years prior to the events of the game.
Biography[]
During the reign of the tyrannical Shadow Queen, four heroes banded together in order to put a stop to her rule. The quartet consisted of a Strong Toad, a Wise Goomba, a scarred Koopa, and a Cold Boo. Together they used the power of the Crystal Stars to seal the Shadow Queen away behind the Thousand-Year Door and bring peace to the land. However, the Fours Heroes knew the seal would not last and decided to hide each of the Crystal Stars for an another hero to one day gather them using a Magical Map they created. The map was placed inside a special box that could only be opened by one with a pure heart.
The Toad returned to his home at Petal Meadows but collapsed after his journey. He gave the Crystal Star in his possession away to a healer who helped him and told them to hide it somewhere no one would find it. The Goomba went back to her home at Boggly Woods where she carved out the Great Tree for the Punies to inhabit before giving them her Emerald Star to protect. The Koopa made his way to Keelhaul Key to hide the Sapphire Star, but it was easily stolen by Cortez as the Koopa was took exhausted to fight against him. Finally, the Boo hid their Ruby Star in Creepy Steeple, which would eventually become home to the shapeshifter Doopliss.
Unfortunately, when the Shadow Queen was sealed away, she placed a curse on the Four Heroes that came into effect when they hid away the Crystal Stars. It is implied that they became the creatures locked inside the black chests Mario finds during his quest to save Princess Peach. The stories of the Four Heroes can be told by Grifty in the east side of Rogueport for the price of five coins each.
