Fred Elliott is a fictional character and central protagonist of the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street, having served as one of the show's primary protagonists from 26th August 1994 up until 11th October 2006.
He was portrayed by the late John Savident.
Biography[]
Fred Elliott first came to Weatherfield in 1994. He became the owner of a butcher's shop that worked alongside his "nephew" Ashley Peacock, although Fred was later revealed to be Ashley's biological father.
In 1997, when Don Brennan burnt down the Underworld factory and framed Ashley for the crime, Fred tried to help his son prove his innocence and teamed up with the company's owner Mike Baldwin to do so. Fred married Maureen Holdsworth but she left him for Bill Webster.
Fred later married Eve Sikes which led to conflicting loyalties as Mike was accused of killing Eve's daughter Linda following the end of their troublesome marriage and Fred refused to turn his back on him. When Eve's son Jimmy threatened Mike Fred convinced her to rescue him which Mike repaid her for by promising not to report Jimmy to the police.
Later Fred discovered Eve was a bigamist and refused to stay with her. After Ashley's wife Maxine was murdered by Richard Hillman Fred tried to comfort his son.
Fred was scammed out of money by a woman named Stacy Hilton who pretended to be an immigrant called Orchid. The next year Fred found her beaten and tried to help her. When she asked to get back together he refused and accused her of being as selfish as ever but ultimately parted on good terms with her when she endangered herself to protect his friend Rita from the man who'd been threatening her.
Fred dated Penny King but she started seeing Mike behind his back. Upon discovering this Fred was furious and only forgave his friend after he won the butcher's in a game of poker and decided to let him keep it.
In 2006 Fred died of hart attack on the day of his wedding to Bev Unwin. Shortly before his death he was visited by Audrey Roberts who confessed to finally returning his feelings for her which causes lasting animosity between her and Bev.
